View Full Version : Friends
I never watched 'Friends' on C4 until the last year or so and I'm a bit of an addict. I keep watching the reruns on E4 over and over.
Anyone else a fan?

I actually haven't watched in about 3 months. That's the longest in about 14 years I have gone without watching it.
I just realised that Friends is 17 years old, that's crazy.
I love Friends, I could never get bored of it. Such an amazing cast and writing team, I think it's wonderful.

I was a huge fan back in the 90s and when the show was available on dvd like ten years ago, one season was like 45 euros, so very expensive, but I collected them all :) odd to see the 90s fashion :) Joey was our favourite!
I used to just watch it all the time but I'm a bit bored of it now tbh, seen them all too many times

Friends is a programme I never tire of watching. I remember watching the last ever episode when I was younger and my whole family was crying together. It was an amazing programme and still is.
I havent watched in a while but whenever I'm in the UK I regularly watch on E4.
Phoebe is my favourite by far. Im so glad they didn't make a friends movie.
Vicky.

I had never watched them until about 6 years ago because my dad always told me it was s***.
Then I watched a few, and made him buy me them all. And watched them nonstop for about 2weeks or so to get through them all

At first I was like yay when there were rumours but then I'm glad it didn't happen because it could have ruined it. And if it were to happen I would want the directors and writers to produce it for the main reason to give an amazing final conclusion not for just making money.
If they had approached it in order to just make money, they would no doubt make enough from the movie as i guarantee even if it was **** so many people would see it regardless. Then due to the success of the first one before we know it we would see:
Friends The Movie, Friends The Movie 2 and god knows what else just to ensure it was well and truly milked dry and ruined for ever.
Apparently Matt Leblanc actually had grey hair when he was doing Friends, he was having to dye it for a lot of the time

Friends is the one programme that I can watch over and over again!
I absolutely adore Ross
I hope they never make a Friends movie. It was perfect as it was, telling the story of six characters from 1994-2004. It was clear that they all grew up and grew away from each other so what would be the point?
Joey (the spin off show) - what I've seen of it on YT - looked like a disaster, so a good reason not to revive it.
Friends is such over-hyped rubbish, it's one of the worst long running TV shows ever imo :bored:

I bet Joey would have lasted longer if Joey had actually referenced the old characters and given them cameos, Joey never even mentioned them, and it'd be weird if Chandler didn't visit Joey in two years
Good reliable television. Calling it either the best show ever or the worst are equally absurd.

I cant believe I can still laugh at the episodes though when I must be on my 10th time(at least) of watching them.
Phoebes 'little black curly hair' song still cracks me up for ages
That's a matter of opinion though.
And you quoted an opinion.
Surely we are beyond the stage of having to add disclaimers to every little post stating it's just the posters opinion. I think most people calling it the best show ever are either young or don't watch that much TV, and the ones calling it the worst ... well that's just stupid. There has been plenty of worse television.

That makes it look just awful. Really does a great job of illustrating the importance of laugh tracks in creating a warm, 'comedy' atmosphere in a show that isin't exactly a tour de force of world class witty writing.
I'm sure it's the same for plenty of other shows too.

Oh I can't tolerate her. She has some good lines but as a whole I can't stomach the ~whacky vibe.
I love all the lads equally. Joey's got great dumb humour and is one of these fictional characters who epitomise that whole chilled out chicken and TV lifestyle I love, Chandler's sarcasm is the business, and Ross is great in the later years at channeling Kramer.

I always loved Monica, until "The One With Monica's Thunder" then I found her personality just changed completely and she turned into a control freak that bossed Chandler around and was a pain to watch. They all changed to be honest but only Rachel's character showed a good change (learning to be independant I guess)

Haha yeah, that was a great ep, I think Ross is the only character who I liked more nearer the end, that was when he was best with the episode where he's "fine" with Rachel and Joey and where he has the new couch :D

I found the show to have its best era after that time. The best period was from seasons 3 to 6 or 7. I've watched season 1 the least because compared to some of the others it's dated quite badly now.

I'm sure it's the same for plenty of other shows too.
It was nowhere near the best writing ever, but at its height Friends could be very witty.
I hated Ross towards the beginning, such a lanky squirt who whined about everything. I didn't care for his crush on Rachel the first year and then his overbearing jealousy when they got together.
I liked him best when he "mellowed" in season 5 after his 2nd divorce.
Joey I found too exaggerated to be funny by the final season. The Joey speaks French episode is one of the worst pieces of television ever.
The other four I pretty much liked through the whole run at different times.
But that's one of the things I love about it, none of them where given the "main" part it was just a great ensemble. "Joey" proved that none of them worked without the other five.

Yes, in some ways it was good that Joey went ahead. It really showed how much they all needed each other.
Also I agree. Joey in Season 10 was unbearable. He knew what the "animals going to farm" thing meant in Season 1 and he wasn't that stupid, and then in the last episode he just knew like nothing. Ridiculous. :bored:
I tend to dislike the episodes with Ross and Rachel together the more I watch them. I love Ross and Rachel together but you want them so much more when they're arguing and when you think they'll get together. When they actually were I was just like, "ugh hurry up and split up".

Chandler Bing ("Actually, it's Miss Chanandler Bong...") was a legend. The only thing was he matured too fast in the last couple of seasons.

Chandler was the best in the early ones. He seemed to be more witty and loved the fact he lived in a fairly normal apartment sharing and therefore had loads of money to spend. Also them all trying to get him to quit smoking was it. It got a bit rubbish when they all started hooking up with eachother. Expecially Ross and Rachel :bored: The whole baby thing annoyed me with Monica and Chandler as well, went on right until the end.
Phoebe and Joey seemed sorta male and female versions of eachother at times, a little bit kooky n that. They had a few good one liners now and then but were never THAT funny. They seemed to get pushed to the back a bit when Aniston and Cox became quite popular. Rachel was one I only liked in the earlier eps, same as Monica. They lost their charm in the later ones so to speak.
Didn't meant to write that much D:

she's been playing the same character in movies ever since it finished.
Agreed.
I think it could have carried on for longer than it did without getting stale but at least it quit while it was ahead rather than take the Simpsons road to longevity. A Friends film would be wholly pointless unless it was based on the desire to spin a storyline further, rather than as a money making venture (obviously that would be what it was, but I'd hate it to be like 'let's make money out of a Friends film' rather than 'we have an idea for a Friends film, let's make money out of that') so I think it's best to let it lie. I think it's fantastic though, the six of them work so well as an ensemble cast but none of them are really that great to watch in other roles - Lisa Kudrow's probably the most watchable out of the six of them in her other roles because you got to see some variety in her character in Friends (as Phoebe and Ursula) so she's not as definitively typecast IMO.

yeah a movie would be pointless since the show has always been set in front of an audience so it would be weird in movie form..but i wouldnt mind a thanksgiving/christmas reunion episode ..just would be cool to see them again

Indeed. Aniston has said as much herself. 'Sex And The City' was on location in NY whilst Friends was studio bound - even the outdoors scenes. And this had to be so because 'Friends' was actually filmed in California.
So to see them film on location in NY would be odd - plus they've all moved on out of the area, so how could they go back to chilling out at the coffee house? And they're all seven years (and counting ... ) older.
The only thing you could do is make a movie called 'Old Friends' about 6 people in their mid 40s and that might not be a good idea.

Still being shown in August. So it looks like ending in September.
Looks like it's finishing today.
They're showing the last double-length episode immediately followed by the Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie movie 'Mr and Mrs Smith'. Someone at E4 Towers must have a good sense of humour.
