Update >
Paul O'Grady left a good impression on Lady GaGa when they met two years ago on his Channel 4 tea-time show. So good in fact, that O'Grady has invited the pop superstar to appear on his ITV1 show. Not only that - but it's a Paul O'Grady: Lady GaGa Special! With plenty of chat, four incredible performances and a very excited audience full of little monsters, Digital Spy were on hand to get all the gossip, as GaGa flew into London to record the show last Friday.
The build-up:
Being in a studio with some of the biggest Lady GaGa fans is quite an experience. A group of the most ardent Little Monsters had decided to camp outside of the ITV building for two days - and that was only with standby tickets, not even guaranteeing them entry. Others had flown to be there - someone tried to beat Spain by declaring that they had come from Australia. I'm thinking someone had their 'Poker Face' on when they said that. Throughout the show the screams of 'We love you', 'We were born this way' continued - at one point 'the bosses upstairs' even asked for it to be toned down. Prior to her performances, GaGa could be heard to sing a few words backstage. Never in view, the sound of her voice would fill the studio, prompting a mass singalong. It's something you wish TV viewers would actually see on the show.
Performance one: 'Hair'
With four performances promised, GaGa opened the show on the piano with 'Hair'. There was just one thing noticeable as she entered the studio - GaGa appeared bald. Yes, you read that correctly. It was oddly captivating to hear her sing 'Hair' while she stared at that recent-favourite green wig. When it's just GaGa on the piano, you can't help but be impressed. Of course, there was even better to come.
Part one: the chat
O'Grady looked in awe of his special guest as she tottered over to the stage. Declaring him her favourite Queen, GaGa was in great form as she took to the couch, proudly showing off the new teacup - which matched her outfit - that she had been given by the host. The discussion took in how the New Yorker had taken "challenges sonically" with Born This Way, and admitted that she was feeling "more courageous lately". She got the fans' approval when she told O'Grady that she argues with her bodyguards over her determination to sign for and meet fans, telling him that she "felt so bad" when she had to rush off from an event without doing so. To loud cheers, GaGa told O'Grady that she is "in it for the long haul" - this lady is here to stay.
At this point, the audience were to enjoy a second performance of 'Hair' - something to do with camera angles, we weren't going to argue with hearing it again!
Part two: the chat
Changed into her second outfit of the night, GaGa discussed her parents and childhood with the host. Recalling how she fought "tooth and nail for one person to believe", she documented her early determination, the support from her parents and that first meeting with Lady Starlight. Talking about not being "one of the popular girls" at school, GaGa said that she would say "hello" to those bullies. Declaring that she is "not into revenge", she proudly stated: "I'm not hell-bent on revenge. I'm really happy and revenge is silly. Only fools need to say the last word." We couldn't have put it better ourselves - a Lady GaGa Book of Inspirational Quotes must surely be on the to-do list?
Performance two: 'The Edge of Glory'
We won't spoil this too much - but let's just say that a New York-style fire escape features in this and the remaining performances. It was an extra treat to hear the album version of the Born This Way closing track. The choreography during the saxophone section was... well, exactly what you would imagine. Don't forget, you can see pictures of all the performances in the gallery.
Part three: the chat
Wearing a Louis Vuitton creation, GaGa returned to the couch - now so comfortable that she had taken to putting her feet up - and discussed how her mother had never been a "stage mum" who pushed her into things. "She loves what I'm doing," she told O'Grady. A bizarre moment followed as the 'Bad Romance' star looked like she was about to sneeze - leading one of the fans in the audience to shout 'Achoo' for her. Joking that she does not have "digestive organs", she asked the entire audiences to make the sneezing noise for her. We're not ashamed to admit that we went along with it. Back on the serious topics, O'Grady discussed how GaGa had initially been signed and dropped by one label. However, not one for bitterness, she simply refused to name the label, adding: "Not everybody is going to get it - and that's okay." Declaring being dropped as the "best thing that has ever happened to me," she admitted that Interscope now "let me do whatever the ****** I want".
Performance three: 'You & I'
We've bloody loved all the performances of 'You & I' throughout the last few months, so it was a real treat to know that it was on the set-list - even better when we realised that it was the album version we would be treated to. Wearing Versace, GaGa continued to make good use of her NYC fire escape, as she sang from the top floor. Our hearts were in our mouths as we watched her climb down the steps in the flowing dress to continue with the final part of her chat with O'Grady.
Part four: the chat
Talking about her fashion statements, GaGa admitted that she currently had an "obsession with Versace". Offering up some exclusive information about the outfits in the video for new single 'The Edge of Glory', she confirmed that Donatella Versace has opened up the archives for the "first time since Gianni Versace" died. Moving onto late British designer Alexander McQueen, GaGa said that she had been "blessed to have known him". Other nuggets included the "fuss" surrounding her infamous meat dress, how the Haus of GaGa is a "dream come true" and a delightful story involving Patti LaBelle and 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow'.
Performance four: 'Born This Way' & 'Judas' medley
Of course, Lady GaGa had to close the show with her two most recent singles. An energetic mix of the two hits ensured that no fan was left disappointed. We've seen a lot of performances of both, and perhaps it's something to do with hearing it live, but this - to our humble eyes and ears - looked and sounded like the best of the Born This Way era. We were sort of hoping that the camera angles might have required a second performance....
Highlight of the night:
Apart from the four performances, GaGa discussed how she had maintained friendships with two of her best mates. "We took our periods together!" she proudly declared. "It's a big deal." We're sure it is. Although, making sure we knew just how big of a deal it really is, GaGa added: "Tampons are a nuisance!". Will this make the final cut? We can't wait to find out!
Lady GaGa's verdict:
Undeniably, there is something about Lady GaGa that an interviewer either gets or doesn't get. Paul O'Grady gets it. He wasn't there to poke fun, question her religious beliefs or try to make her say something for a headline. This is a show full of chat and performances for the fans. As the lady herself declared: "This has been one of the easiest shows for me to come on." The standing ovation as she waved goodbye before vanishing backstage was well earned.
The Paul O'Grady Lady GaGa Special airs this Friday at 9pm on ITV1.
