View Full Version : Wii HD?

Idk if there's already been a thread on the Wii HD. I couldn't find one by searching so yeah.

Anyways, Egadget have just made a post about the new Wii which is codenamed "Project Café". The new console will be HD compatible but the most intriguing thing is that its controllers are reportedly going to feature sizeable touchscreens and cameras. They've said that the cameras could be used to, say take a picture of yourself and place your head on the body of an on screen character. Of course this could all turn out to be incorrect but still, its pretty interesting.

Oh yeah some pictures of the console have leaked along with mockups of the controller in question. Here they are:

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/project-cafe-consoles-black-and-white-mockups.jpg

And here's a YouTube video of a private developers conference which features a person giving a presentation on the new console:

So yeah. I'm quite excited for this now! Before I didn't give a **** but now I'm really interested. :amazed:

Wii is for girls.
Real men play the 360.

I hope to God that Nintendo don't completely hog E3 this year with their 'LOOK AT US WITH THE WII 2!'
'LOL LOOK AT ALL THE NEW 3D GAMES WE HAVE!'
'LOOK AT THIS, WE'RE RELEASING A NEW 3DS BUT THIS TIME THE POWER BUTTON IS IN A DIFFERENT POSITION OMG BUY NOW!' :bored:

Quite looking forward to E3, providing they show off some new games for proper consoles - and reveal Grand Theft Auto 5.

They got back on the right track with the 3DS, I think if they continue the hardcore focus then this successor has every chance of being great. The Wii wasn't that bad when you considered it's killer apps, it's just that people find it easy to hate due to the casual games while they jam their fingers in their ears and go 'NANANANA' loudly when you mention it's good games.

E3 this year should be good, as long as they reveal some bloody decent 3DS games or announce more news on the games we heard about in 2010 (Mario Kart, Animal Crossing) but haven't heard anything from since.

Still though, I hope this console has some good online stuff.

Don't hold your breath.

When Wii game out in '06 I loved it - it was unique and for the first few months they released games that involved you getting up and moving and that.

Now they just release the same old animated wank designed for Asian Girls or they release games taken from Dreamwork Movies - that require no movement at all.

That's all the Wii is now.

That and like you said, just a chance for Nintendo to churn out new Mario Games.

If they could return to it's original concept it'd be good - but they won't.

Although, I suppose all the fun left the Wii once we establish the fact you can just lie on the sofa eating a bag of crisps whilst moving your wrist up and down - rather than getting up and jogging on the spot.

Yeah Nintendo really need to get off their backsides in terms of online connectivity. That and it needs a major rebranding. 'Nintendo Wi-fi Connection'? The name alone makes me want to throw myself onto a rusty spike never mind how much of ass wipe it truly is to use. :bored:

I honestly love that on Wii - just the online concept, I love racing Polish People and that and like hurling Bananas at them in a really pissed off way - it's like taking out my frustration that a Polish woman got my order wrong in KFC, I can't through a turtle shell at her in public so I'ma do it on Mario Kart. :amazed:

Yeah I see what you mean. Kinect can run circles around the Wii in terms of its technological superiority and versatility but the new things Nintendo are adding make me wonder whether they've actually got a good idea here. I bet they've come up with many clever ways of using the touchscreen on the controller. Hopefully more mature games like CoD will tap into that and integrate it into the gameplay. It could render the need for in game menu's useless if you think about it and de clutter the experience by having all the pause functions on the controller?

Idk I'm just hoping this'll be good. I have a feeling it could be really half baked though like the DSi XL. :bored:

Yes, I know right! MK is amazing, on every single console. I still think Double Dash is the best one. :D and :laugh3: yes don't throw turtle shells in public.

Animal Crossing Wii was decent but it was too similar to the DS version and my Wii is in the living room so I barely played it, unlike the DS which I could take everywhere and play wherever I go.

And I think this apparent 'hardcore focus' thing is a little overrated to be honest. And I always thought because of that Nintendo would always have a grip on the casual market but the Kinect is becoming seriously hip. Not my cup of tea but people are talking about it. The 360 is becoming an all in one beast of a console that is shifting more units than ever while it should be dying based on traditional console lifespans.

There's a lot of good games for the Wii, people just like a reason to bitch so they keep on about the casual games. If you can't move past them then you know nothing of the Wii since there was stacks of brilliant games for it. It's like hating on the Xbox for having too many FPS games, it's stupid since you're discounting a whole other bunch of great games over a small part of it's product range.

I know, you have to go through the hassle of loading the game, setting up Wi-Fi on every single game etc. just to get a separate friend code for every game!

The 3DS fixed that, in that you only have 1 friend code, but still it's like you're sat there going "yeah so it's 738446253467564357435395435439546853648563453483.1 4" whilst with PS3 and Xbox 360 you just rememeber their name of it's full of random caps, punctuation and numbers, it takes like 2 seconds to write down and type in, unlike Nintendo.

They should've learnt by now. :bored:

Casual games do not form a small part of the Wii's product range though. They dominate the balance to the point of breaking the scales.

I don't think Nintendo will learn, I think they think they can keep selling family games and making a living from that but they need to wake up and realise that versatility and enabling your product to be able to appeal to multiple markets is the key to success.

Who knows though. This console might just be all of those things.

I agree, they won't learn.

Family games are good and all, and the thing is the Wii has some decent titles for all ages and both genders, with more fun controls, but if Nintendo had decent online features, I reckon they could do better than Sony or Microsoft with games like COD. I'd much rather be standing up and using a remote as a gun and stuff than sitting down using a controller. But no one will bother unless they stop focusing on just casual gamers, which is what they seem to do.

The thing is about Kinect though is you can't cheat at it. It forces you to actually use your whole body. With the Wii however, you can just sit on your couch and flap your wrist and win the whole game. Kinect may not have many standout games at the moment but thats sure to change when you realise the impact its had. Its been a huge cash cow for Microsoft and has sold like hotcakes for them. At E3 you'll probably see developers tapping into Kinect a lot more.

When I've played my Kinect with people that haven't used it before though, nearly all for them comment on how much better it is than the Wii. I wanted it for Dance Central alone.

I think Nintendo have learned from their mistakes, look at the 3DS. I can name more proper games for it then casual ones and it's got a lot of third party support from respected developers and franchises, It had a bad launch but the upcoming games will make up for it I think.

The problem with the Wii is that they didn't push the mountains of quality games they had for it enough so all the good companies abandoned it so now there's only Nintendo's own games and the odd good third party game to look forward to. Nintendo needs to support third party developers as it'll be them that'll attract the true gamers back to this console.

I didn't say I liked Kinect though. So far it is just a casual fappers paradise but then the device happens to be hooked up to this console it requires that has a massive catalogue of excellent games for virtually everyone.

Microsoft are covering all the angles. And I completely trust them to push hardcore - I hate using that term - I completely trust them to push games on it if it continues to sell. They know where their bread is buttered.

True, the 3DS has many games made by third party developers but they're not that good at the moment. Nintendo are taking their time with the big names for 3DS, which is a shame. The Kinect will become a graveyard just like the Wii has recently. Why bother pushing proper games when you have a bunch of idiots willing to buy cheap to produce dance games and Exercise Sims? Microsoft have been completely idiotic with their handling of the Kinect from the start and it's too late to save it now as it's core audience is the same casual one that ended up turning the Wii into a desert. At least the Wii has a very sizable library of good games to boast about, I can't think of any true games for the Kinect.

I'd say give the touch screen a chance, it worked best on the DS when it wasn't overdone so I think it's got every chance of working here since Nintendo's had a good 6-7 years to perfect it. I imagine in games like Silent Hill and such it would be used for puzzles and such. I'm guessing it'll just be a small feature and not the main USP of the console.

It's too late, it's been out for what, a year now? All it's got at the moment is high hardware sales, exactly the same as the Wii, IIRC the game sales haven't been impressive at all because like we saw on the Wii, the casual audiences doesn't buy many games. You'll only get a few big hits out of the casual audience in comparison to games aimed at actual gamers and that'll scare off the major third party developers as their high cost games won't be able to outshine the cheap likes of Louise Redknapp's Exercise: Heavy Metal Yoga Edition or Fairground games #455434. Microsoft have repeated Nintendo's mistakes letter for letter and it was evident since they first revealed it.

The Playstation Move has done a much better job really at finding a middle ground, it's sold decently well and they haven't saturated their own market with cheap crap to sustain it.
