What is the difference if you sprain your arm, fracture your arm, or break your arm? and which would the most painful :love:
Shaun

sprains are to do with muscles I think, whereas breaks are bones (obviously). Not really sure what's unique about fractures.

because i "fractured" my wrist last year, and it was the most painful thing ever, but i still don't watch actually happened to it and why it was different from a sprain or a break?
Niamh.

I think a fracture is more of a crack in the bone more than an actual break (I think anyway):joker:

Sprain = just a muscular thing. According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprain), its and injury "..of joints that is caused by being stretched beyond their oversized capacity and possibly more."
Fracture = Crack in a bone.
Break = Pretty self explanatory.

I was told a fracture hurts more than a break. No idea why but it's apparently true. Having said that I fractured my arm in two places once and wasn't fussed in the slightest. Infact I only took myself to hospital for the attention :joker: They put me in plaster but I took it off about a fortnight later

You are right Niamh, a fracture covers any sort of cracks in the bone that isn't a full break, clearly if a bone os broken it is split in 2.
A sprain is more muscular in that you have badly pulled some part which causes painful swelling, all are painful depending on the person but clearly a bone split in 2 should likely be more painful however a fracture often delivers more pain.

Was wondering when someone with a little common sense was going to spread the good word.
Sprains and strains are muscle, joint tendon and ligament injuries(soft tissue generally)
Fracture is the proper term for a break, damage to a bone from a hairline crack right through to compressing and shattering, there are several types or classifications of fractures, closed, open complicated hairline and greenstick being used to decsribe the actual fracture/break.

Thanks! In all fairness, I should've first referred to "Fracture" as the correct word for "Break". Sprain or strain is just a slight pull, usually soft tissue. I'm surprised that people are confused by this. :)

I always thought a sprain was tendon/ligament damage, a break was a clean break or snap of the bone and a fracture was a crack in the bone or when you 'chip' a bit of bone off.
I broke my arm and fractured my wrist in one accident so I think there is a slight difference between the two.
