I wonder how they'll choose who goes on first. Reckon it'll be first come, first served?

I tried reading along with the first chapter but it was pretty annoying because I just wanted to go on the site and mess about on there :joker:

I'd say you need a good understanding of the book though.

There are little interactive 'In the story' articles though that give you a brief overview of what's gone on up to the point you're at, which is useful if you've forgotten, so the books aren't really necessary as long as you know the story.

Erm. You'd probably get more out of it if you have read the books but as long as you know the general story you'll be fine. I take it you've seen the films and stuff? If you have, that should be fine.

Only the first book is on the site at the moment anyway, Chamber of Secrets isn't being released on there until 2012.

I really liked the first two. I think the films got them perfect and the changes they did make seemed sensible when they made a film from it.

The third one is really awesome so far too and I dare say that the film got Aunt Marge's inflation done better than the book. I only say that because it was a lot funnier when Harry left the house and she was still floating in the sky and screaming.

But, on another note, I want to be in Slytherin.

UPDATE: Another batch of Welcome emails was sent out on Wednesday 24 August, at approximately 3:00pm (BST).

On Monday 15 August, we began sending out Welcome emails to a small number of Beta users. These people have been busy exploring the site, leaving comments to tell us when they like something, and making suggestions when they find something they would like us to improve. In just four days we’ve learned an awful lot and, as a result, have started making changes to improve the Pottermore experience.

We know that a lot of people are eager to receive their Welcome emails and that it’s difficult to wait but, as we mentioned in our earlier blog post, we’re staggering entry to Pottermore and to start with we’re only letting a small number of people onto the site.

While we can’t tell you exactly when you’ll receive your Welcome email, we will update this blog post to let you know whenever a new batch of Welcome emails has been sent out, so keep visiting the Insider and watching our Twitter feed.

omgz I finally got my email today! :D :D :D :amazed: Sooooo happy to get it at last!!!! :amazed:

edit: I'm in Gryffindor :D Extremely pleased with that, even though I thought I would be sorted into Ravenclaw. Only downside is I won't have much backstory for Gryffindor because it's already in the books, unlike the other three houses. :(

I'm really loving it though! The questions you get asked for wand selection and for sorting are so creative and well thought out, they really make you think. I answered honestly, although I'm sure plenty won't have in the hope of getting into their favorite house. The backstories on there are so great to read, I loved in particular the one about McGonagall and the Dursleys. I haven't even completed the whole book yet though, so I'm sure there's more to come! Ahh, it's so great!

True but even with the later books it's still just point and click, it's not much better than that.

I reckon some company could. I'd be happy to wait for it.

Should make it like Runescape. You do Hogwarts or something then go off into the wizarding world and make your own way kinda thing

Chamber of Secrets early 2012 but I think it may have been delayed further because Pottermore was supposed to be open to the public by now.

First off, I want to start by saying that I love Harry Potter. The first book was why I started to read at all, I’ve grown up with the series/movies, and it has just overall changed my life. So, I’ve been keeping quiet about E-books, Pottermore, and anything really to do with online reading because I know that, for some people, this is their “experience”. However, I have to say enough is enough. I’ve pretty much written off Pottermore as nothing more than a “nice try.” Why? Well I’ll tell you!

—Number 1: Who can even access it?

I was following Pottermore since before its release. Watched the cool YouTube video, followed the feathers and such for early access, you name it. It seemed like a dream come true. But Sony must have been seriously ill prepared for what was coming. It was Universal’s Hp Park opening all over again. Those lucky enough to get access have experienced nothing more than crashes and delays. Content and changes kept being implemented during peak access hours, usually ruining people’s fun. It’s like when new game consoles come out. You let the first million people go buy it, experience all the technical difficulties, then complain about them enough to implement change; This normally results in the quick release of a better quality console, thus allowing you to get a better version fairly soon. Since we had the first half of this process with Pottermore, it seemed safe to assume the second half would occur. Right? Well, too bad, it hasn’t.

—Number 2: Delays anyone?

With all that being said, Pottermore was supposed to be open to the public not too long after its “grand opening;” Aka sometime *last year.* It has been nearly 5 months and still no true public access. And let’s talk about the actual content for a second. “Lucky” users have only gotten the first book…over and over and over. Pottermore was going to release a book a year. But even if the site had been perfectly up and running, why would anyone want to wait a whole year before getting Chamber of Secrets? Let’s face it, we as a general public have a short attention span. No, I’m not saying that there wouldn’t be the hardcore fans that patiently wait for *7 years* to get all the books, but I’m happy to say I won’t be one of them. I have actual books for a reason. “Extras” get posted on the rest of the internet enough for my liking.

—Number 3: Just a poor set up.

Overall, Pottermore just could have been done better. A good example has recently come from one of my other favorite authors, Richelle Mead, who just released an app for her series The Vampire Academy. This app is like Pottermore in a nutshell, only for her books. It seems brilliant. It has everything Pottermore intended to offer (minus the book particular details of course, this is a different series) all in one easy to download application. You can read each of the books, learn a ton of new information, watch videos about the novel, interact with fans, the list is endless! And it hasn’t had any negative reactions thus far. No “limited access,” no “delayed content,” and most importantly no messy interfaces.

Pottermore’s overall concept seemed like a good idea at the start. I understand Jo’s want to give the fan base a nice area to interact with her books and dig deep into their secrets. But it just isn’t happening. There are easier, better ways to achieve this kind of thing without all this ridiculousness.

Long opinion short, Sony needs to either get it together or give it up. Harry Potter fans found ways to get the kind of experiences the site is supposed to be offering easily enough before its “release” and I think we’ll do ok finding them without it as well.

Saw this post online and it pretty much sums up my feelings towards Pottermore. It was a real letdown, I loved it at first but after a couple of weeks it just got a bit dull. There's only so much brewing potions and wand duels one can tolerate before it gets boring. The new information and backstories on characters like McGonagall and the Dursleys were brilliant but I personally wanted more of this, there wasn't enough for my liking.

Telegraph recently did an article on the disappointment surrounding Pottermore and Jo's rep released this statement:

A spokesman for Rowling would say only that the author was “not ready to say” why it had been delayed. “There is no further information at the moment – but it will be obvious when it is announced.”
The spokesman added: “We appreciate fans’ patience, and as soon as we’re in a position to let them know more, we will do so.”

I hope this means that when it opens to the public there's going to be some big changes along with the release of the Chamber of Secrets book.

I completely forgot all about this. Is it still not running smoothly?

I think they've just overcomplicated things and started too big.

LOST INTEREST.

It can gtf now - they should just do a World of Warcraft kind of Harry Potter Game instead, would be a far bigger earner and alot more fun.
People like to play video games online now, no one wants to read.

Nope, there's still lots of glitches on the site. Not even open to the public yet either and there hasn't been any updates on the Pottermore blog in ages. To think it all started out so promisingly. :(

Well, Harry Potter is primarily a novel so it's target audience is readers.

As for being a "big earner", the point of Pottermore is it is a free to use site so that doesn't matter.

I do actually :idc:

It was never promised to be an online game like you're suggesting and the chances of it turning into one are slim. It's an online reading experience for the fans to act as a companion to the books.

Pottermore will be opening to everyone on April 2012.

According to the Pottermore Insider Blog announcement, which was just released:

We know that the extended wait for those wishing to be part of Pottermore has been frustrating, and we’d like to thank you all for your patience so far.
Many of you are interested to know why we extended the original opening date beyond October of last year.

We always knew Pottermore would be incredibly popular, which is why we made the decision to only open to one million Beta users to begin with. We wanted to make sure that we had a really good understanding of how people want to use the site and which bits we’d need to modify before giving more people access.

We gathered some incredibly useful feedback from our Beta users, and it became clear that our original platform wouldn’t be suitable when millions more users came on to the site. So we made a big decision: to move Pottermore to an entirely different platform set up. This ‘invisible’ change has involved a lot of work behind the scenes but it will enable our users to get the best from Pottermore as it grows and develops.

There have definitely been some challenges and the whole Pottermore team has been working really hard to incorporate all the Beta activity and feedback. This means that over the coming weeks and months we’ll be adding exclusive content and many more exciting features (such as sounds) to Pottermore for you to explore, share and discover.

So get ready to join the Pottermore journey – the wait is nearly over.

I'll believe it when I see it, there have been so many delays now. :suspect:

Still I'm glad they're going to add music and I hope the Chamber of Secrets book will be added.

CEO of Pottermore Charlie Redmayne has been on a speaking tour about the site lately. We’ve learned that Pottermore has a promising future, and today he’s added a bit more to get us excited.

In an article noting that the site now has three million users, The Guardian spoke to Redmayne about the community issues:

Redmayne also acknowledged issues with Pottermore’s community and promised change – although everything will continue to be moderated. “The community elements are too restrictive at the moment and we will be easing them up. Within a community, you need to be able to communicate,” he said. “In the next few weeks we will enable people to communicate more, but to do so in a completely safe environment.”

He also updated everyone on Chamber of Secrets and promised that it will be better than Sorcerer’s Stone. He even backtracked a little bit on his previous comments about the book arriving in the “next few weeks:”

The site will also become more interactive, he promised, revealing that work is currently underway on launching the second book in the series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. “It won’t be the next couple of weeks but we’re working to get it live as soon as possible,” he said. “What is going to become a given is that there will be a lot more interaction added. When book two goes online – and we’re working on that at the moment – it will be a real step up from the stuff in book one. There’ll be more from Jo, and more interactivity. And we will grow this over the seven books – you will see it becoming a broader and broader and richer and richer experience,” he said.

New updates on Pottermore. Looking forward to seeing Chamber of Secrets on there, mainly for the new content from Jo although the site itself has gotten better since it opened to the public. I like that there's now music and sounds on the site and that it's going to become more interactive.
