In news that could well hit the new series of Big Brother on Channel 5 hard, a parliamentary committee is set to debate whether or not reality shows would supply contestants with booze. The move comes after MTV reality series Geordie Shore caused controversy with its “drunken antics”

With the cast members on the latest in a line of ‘scripted reality’ shows ending up in drunken fights, one MP proposed a ban on such scenes on UK telly.

It is understood that the supply of booze could well violate TV watchdog Ofcom’s rules over “informed consent”. And we all thought that the O-word wouldn’t be mentioned with the series moving from Channel 4.

Colin Shevills of alcohol charity Balance told The Sun: “Programmes like Geordie Shore trivialise alcohol misuse, suggesting that drinking to the point of getting in a fight or becoming physically ill is amusing.”http://telly mix.co.uk/2011/reality-tv/35679-mps-consider-ban-over-giving-reality-show-contestants-alcohol.html

there would be an easy way around this. The only rule they could put in is to not broadcast large consupmtions of alcohol they could not psyically stop people from having it so it would just be a case of editing out the housemates drinking but still show the consequences....:)

If ofcom was in charge it would be law to where a safety hat & steel boots to bed, wish they'd stop treating us like idiots.

Oh FFS.

Some new little wanna-be reality show comes along and the ******ing Geordie sluts can't handle alcohol - and then Big Brother, a far more better show is dragged down with it.

Thanks alot MTV for ruining Reality TV for everybody.

Honestly this is the kind of law they would have in America, not the UK.

I think we do need housemates that are entertaining without alchohol. However alcohol should be there. It should be available. This is ridiculous!!

Geordie shore was ok the first two episodes but now its just rather boring and one dimensional.

All the HM's want is alcohol. There would be nothing else to motivate them to do tasks. Nothing much better BB can offer when you're cooped up in a house 24/7

It'll never get brought into law. It doesn't even bear thinking about. Just a nonsense, over the top proposal from some high strung, annonymous MP.

I can't stand all these new 'real life' reality shows, but I didn't think they'd effect what I want to ****ing watch!! Fingers crossed this proposal will never see daylight.

True. They could have Marcus Bentley say how much they've had. It'd be weird, but it could work if this dump law was brought in.

Wow, this is ridiculous. I thought the UK was more liberal than this...

It better not happen. If it's that big of a deal, just cancel Geordie Shore. Don't let other shows suffer because one group of people can't handle their alcohol.

Me too.

I'm so dissapointed, this is against our 'Live Large and Party Harder' culture - wankers.

LOL I agree so much about cancelling GS - Being totally honest, if there was ever a time for the MPs to go all up in arms and decide to ban booze on Reality TV it would of been in 2004 after Fight Night, for a number of reasons.

One being Big Brother is and was the most influential reality show ever created, banning drinking on RT over some silly new kid on the block [Geordie Shore] is a joke.
