Sony is looking to unveil its next PlayStation home console sometime next year, according to a new report.

Usually reliable US news site IndustryGamers claims it's heard from "industry sources at a top developer" that the PlayStation 4 will become a real thing in the next 18 months.

The claims come just a few weeks after a similar story pointing to an Xbox 720 reveal next year, with developer Crytek cited as the source of the rumour.

Industry Gamers doesn't elaborate further on its claims, but the announcement of two next-generation consoles in 2012 surely wouldn't make Nintendo, which has just revealed plans to enter the HD generation with Wii U, particularly pleased.

It'd also be quite a surprise, seeming as only a few weeks ago Sony reaffirmed its 10-year cycle strategy for the PlayStation 3.

Xbox's EMEA VP, Chris Lewis also stated in an interview at E3 that he sees Xbox 360 as about "halfway" through its life cycle

Obviously they are both in the blueprint stages already as is the norm but it will be at least another two years before the new Xbox sees the light and the same if not more should go for the Playstation.

I can wait. The Xbox is still alive and kicking and the Playstation's true power hasn't even been touched yet. Long live this generation.

Which bollocks is this? Sony have not gone on record of saying anything at all about their next project. There is a difference between what Sony says and what a website or magazines 'source', 'insider' or 'analyst' says.

Exactly - I realize now but in '07 there was so much stuff in Magazines and that about how Sony don't plan to release the PS4 until 2014.

PS2 games don't even play on the PS3 you twit. And they wont play on the PS4 either. It requires hardware emulation that involves literally sticking bits of the PS2 into new systems. It cost too much hence why it was removed as a feature. Even high end PC systems can't emulate PS2 games very well at all and it's 2011.

The PS4 won't be out for years. Sony is starting to make healthy profit on the PS3. It's only just hit it's stride and it's only going to grow and grow.

It feels like the PS3's only just been released. The PS4 should only be announced in a few more years.
