Inspired by the ITV1 doc currently on TV - Should women in jail be able to keep their babies with them behind bars?

Most prisons take babies away after 24 hours of being born but it appears more and more American womens prisons are allowing the mother to keep their baby with them in a special wing as it will apparently make them less likely to reoffend upon release

What do you think?

depending on how long their sentence is for and how serious their offence is, then it could be a good idea, i don't think having the baby in their for more than a year would be a good idea though

Imagine how much street cred it would give someone of the chav persuasion in later life!

They only give the places to certain women. I doubt a woman who was in for the murder of her kids would pass!

i think many studies show that parents bonding in the first months of life are very important for children, so i think it's a good thing.

Women usually say that the worst pain in the world is losing a child. If the father is stable and able then of course the child should be with the father. But i imagine most of the women giving birth in prison probably don't have the best taste in men, so i doubt the father is a viable option...

Theres one woman in there who's on her 8th pregnancy. 3 are adopted. One with it's father. One with a cousin. Not sure about the others. Various family I think :/

There are no words to describe the above... none.

the even scarier thing is: there are people in society who think it's against the human rights of a murderers like this: to sterlise these killers so they will never have a child again.

I think if someone is having a baby when they are sentenced, then depending on the crime obviously, once the Baby is born then she should have a period of time for bonding with the new Baby but I think the Baby should be out of the prison environment as soon as possible, within a short time rather than longer.

I noticed a fair few of these women were in for drugs offences so really I also think they should only be able to keep the Baby in prison on condition they are seeking to be cleaned of taking drugs and in reality not restored to their Baby even after their sentence if they haven't been cleaned of drugs because they will then do a lot of harm likely to their Baby and other Children also.

Yeah short term it could work but in the long run it can't really be good for the kid to grow up in a prison environment

no, definitely not, I doubt they'd let them in there longer than a year anyway

Not if they're violent or have been involved in sex crimes

Think the majority were allowed to keep their babies due to 'lesser' crimes. Drugs and prostitution are considered. I think the general idea is once the babies are born they will turn their backs on that lifestyle
