This was reported on
ITV1 This morning.
Stub it out! Market town to follow New York's lead with blanket ban on smoking in the street
"A town is set to become the first in Britain to ban smoking from its streets.
Councillor Paul Bartlett, 50, wants to create a new bylaw to outlaw smoking in any open place or public street in the market town of Stony Stratford, Buckinghamshire.
If the scheme is passed by the town's council as well as Milton Keynes Council, smokers who lit up in public places would risk being fined."

wouldn't it more sense to just ban selling cigarettes?
so you can sell cigarettes from every shop, but you can't smoke them?
If the government has decided that cigarettes are so horrible, why are they only targeting the smokers? why arn't they targeting the tobacco companies, and the shops that sell them too?
We don't like cigarettes and we don't want people to smoke, but instead of taking issue with the creators and sellers, we will just punish the actual victims of this addictive product?
That doesn't seem very logical to me.
Kate!

I am all for this, its horrible when you walk down the street in the town centre and someone blows smoke in your face as you pass, or has their cigarette in their hand and it touches your clothes as you pass and burns them which has actually happened to me and when I said to the person that they had burnt my clothing I received a torrent of abuse..... Great!!

I don't have any aversion to smokers at all, there are some inconsiderate smokers, just as there are inconsiderate people who when drinking cans of pop, just throw down the can/bottle or whatever when they are finished or they bump into you and you get some splashed on you.
I have never smoked but I have friends who do and it doesn't bother me in the slightest.
Streets belong to the public,or should do, people pay council tax and they should be able to smoke if they want to, it's not like they will be following someone around smoking all the time, in all the time other people will be using the streets too.
By all means ban it from inside buildings other than the peoples own homes but out in the street,a step too far and how can you be doing anything morally illegal by smoking in the street when it's perfectly legal to buy cigarettes anyway.
It is beginning to seem like the nanny state, this Govt accused the last one of being, is now being taken on now by this coalition govt.

George Orwell and 1984, was not far off the mark he was just about 20 to 30 years too early as to his predictions of 1984.
Also arista, I take your point that the govt do not run that town but the govt actually runs the whole Country as you well know, it had in its election manifesto its determination to remove from peoples lives the nanny state nonsense and restrictions placed on them during the last govt as to Education, health and safety and how councils operated.so the govt should demand this cannot be done anywhere in Britain.
We are not the USA, we don't have different states, there should not be permitted different laws in one town that are not binding in other towns.
Only the govt can demand that doesn't happen so the govt should act and slap this silly council down and hard.

‘Smokers then get their butt, which is full of saliva, and chuck it on the floor.'
Not true of everyone. Some people dispose of their cigarette butts in a proper manner in designated ash trays or bins.
Saliva comes from people spitting, chewing gum, any number of sources.
We should ban all vehicles too because of the pollution. And why stop there?
Actually, if you smoke in your car is that deemed a public place? Say you have the window open?
If smoking is banned in "in any open place or public street" then where will anybody smoke? In your own home only? Will you not be able to open your windows or doors? What about people who rent and cannot smoke in their own homes and do not have a garden? Banning in public parks and beaches would not bother me personally as a smoker. I have to adapt accordingly. I would be interested to know what is deemed as "any open place".

Also I have an addictive personality, so if I stopped smoking properly, I would likely end up hooked to something else.
And the country would be ****ed if everyone stopped smoking anyway. As livia pointed out in the other thread, smokers fund 10% of the NHS. If they keep up with **** like this, expect your taxes to rise massively.

I agree 100% with InOne and Jedward fever, we are going backwards, if smoking was illegal then fine, there would be reasons for these nanny like petty and discriminatory bans in all public areas,
Smoking is not illegal and also smoking is never likely to die out completely. I'd rather have a smoker who stubs their dump on the ground than the chewing gum brigade who spit it out when finished and just leave that too for people to stand on.
I have never ever smoked and never will but smoking is legal, the Govt makes a fortune from smokers, even those on benefits who smoke return much of their benefit to the Govts coffers in tobacco duty.
Smokers are doing nothing illegal so the prejudiced need to accept that fact and live and let live.
