past and present faves

Kylie;Madonna(early stuff);Elisa Fiorillo;Cathy Dennis;Belinda Carlisle;Toni Braxton;Anastasia;Alanis Morrisette;Lisa Stansfield;Martika;Rihanna;Katy Perry;Adele;Gaga.

Those are just some, I tend to prefer female singers to male, males tend to be better in groups, that's just a general opinion though.

Surprised Beyoncé hasn't been mentioned yet, she is easily the best popular vocalist around atm in my opinion, followed closely by Adele.

But some of my other favourite female voices: Lauryn Hill, India.Arie, Erykah Badu, Shingai Shoniwa, P!nk.

Have spent the last 2 hours listening tofemale singers from all decades on a range of compilation CDs and greatest hits/Best of CDs.

At this time choosing 10 Female artists. They would be from past to present on singing only obviously not performing.

Madonna, Adele, Petula Clark,Diana Ross, Gwen Stefani,Kylie Minogue,Dusty Springfield,Beyonce,Olivia Newton John and Dido.

I'm a big fan of Madonna, but I don't think she's a great vocalist. Of her generation (circa. 1984-89) I would say Alison Moyet, Gloria Estefan and Cyndi Lauper were better.

I really like Elkie Brooks' voice. Nina Simone's amazing, Kate Bush is extremely distinctive and memorable and the likes of Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion have provided some timeless vocals. Beyoncé and Christina Aguilera are, IMO, the voices of our generation. I've always loved Nadine Coyle's version of Fields of Gold that she sang on Popstars: The Rivals, considering she was 16/17 at the time, it was quite remarkable and has always stayed with me as a really great performance and I've always thought her voice is excellent. I love the voices of the original three Sugababes (Siobhan Donaghy, Mutya Buena and Keisha Buchanan) and all three of them have incredibly powerful and commanding voices in different ways, in my opinion. Adele is brilliant. Nobody else is springing to mind straight away but I'm sure there are countless more I could name.

Tracey Chapman was one of those artists that missed my radar apart from Fast Car, I'm clueless on her.

I'm really impressed with her song Baby Can I Hold You that I'm going to do some research :)

EDIT: I've just looked her up and she's released 8 studio album....
