The final show, which took place last night, took a massive 63.4 million votes, with Hicks beating Katharine McPhee into second place
The finale show featured duets between the final contestants and worldwide music stars, including Meatloaf and Mary J Blige.
Hicks had been told in the original auditions that he did not have the right image to be a pop star, but gained a devoted legion of supporters as the series progressed.
