Spelling mistakes 'cost millions' in lost online sales

An online entrepreneur says that poor spelling is costing the UK millions of pounds in lost revenue for internet businesses.

Charles Duncombe says an analysis of website figures shows a single spelling mistake can cut online sales in half.

Mr Duncombe says when recruiting staff he has been "shocked at the poor quality of written English".

He says the big problem for online firms isn't technology but finding staff who can spell.

The concerns were echoed by the CBI whose head of education and skills warned that too many employers were having to invest in remedial literacy lessons for their staff.

I've been saying the same thing for years. In fact, I hit on this topic on a thread I raised about the standards of education these days.

True example: I received an online application from a 21 year old a few weeks ago. His email application contained 2 lines, with a total 34 words. Out of that - there were 13 spelling mistakes.

Often you hear job seekers moaning that they apply for jobs and never receive the courtesy of an acknowledgement. If someone can't even be bothered to use a spell checker - why should I waste my time on sending out replies to them? They didn't give a damn, why should I?

I always try to get my spelling right and I also try to get my grammar correct. I hayt txt talk in txt mgs!

TBF - as much as it's nice to see on forums etc - it's not really an issue (other than point scoring when it suits.... guilty as charged!! :hugesmile:) - but in the big bad world, it does matter.

The problem sometimes can be that people are 'too used' to texting, having informal online convos that the bad spelling can simply be bad habit - and a bad habit that some don't even realise they are making when it really matters.

I hate text talk, spelling mistakes and bad grammar. The amount of CV's/resumes I have come across in my time that are not only shockingly bad, but some of the worst examples of education I have ever witnessed. As soon as I get to mistakes on a CV I don't even bother to read the rest and just put it straight into the shredder.

Regrettably, that's the way of the world - it's not just the spelling, it's context, vocabulary and grammar, too ..... ;)

..... but people were complaining about the same thing in the 1930's, when "talkies" were a global phenomenon ..... :spin:
