Where do they come from?

Do they come from the heart?

Or do we invent them in the mind?

The heart just pumps blood around the body, theyll happen because of the brain somehow.

The concept of emotions has always confused me - happiness, sadness, anger etc. How do we know how to feel them, how can you feel them when they aren't physical, and why do we have them at all?

the mind.

Apparently its something to do with chemicals :/

Though I dont believe that because I seem to be able to turn my emotions on and off whenever its needed/I want to

It's strange the way you don't know one with out it's opposite.

Like you don't realise how happy you were until you become sad.

I don't know about you but I know when I'm happy :suspect:

I don't think I explained it well. Like yep you can be going through a very happy part of your life, but you take it for granted in a way, and you don't realise how much you were taking it for granted until something happens and you become sad, and becoming happy again seems so distant.

It's sort of like beauty. Someones beauty is ugly, whilst someones happy could be sad.

We can never judge the degree either, we might not know what our true happiness or true sadness is. Or what if we're only able to feel those emotions to a certain degree, so we can never truly be elated?

Its really interesting, and you cant feel the emotions you want to feel either :suspect:

I completely get what you mean Claudy.

How weird. I was discussing this with Ian a while ago.

I watched a fascinating documentary in which it's been found that emotions may indeed be related to the heart.

Apparently some of the 'sensor' that are in the brain that are believed to be connected to emotions: the heart contains the same sensors. Testing showed that the 'heart' reacted first to indicators/emotional triggers - before the brain did.

The documentary then spoke to people who had heart transplants and who had taken on traits from the donor (ie; donor loved stout. Recipient had been tee total. After transplant: receipient suddenly developed taste for stout. the same principle was applied to memory and emotions that were displayed by the 'donor' when they were living ...that had not been traits the recipient had shown, prior to transplant).

As I say, it was fascinating.

What bemuses / perplexes me is the way in which there is no measure on emotions... ie; in respect of quantifying the incredibly range of emotions, and the levels within each emotion (christ... that sounds like one of those convos you need to be stoned to have!! and I'm not!!).

So is love a chemical in the brain that tricks you into breeding?

Thats true too, you could be asked on a scale of 1-10 how happy you are on an amazing day and say 10, then on another amazing day vote 10 again but feel even happier that day - we cant truley measure it because were constantly having brighter days and gloomier ones.

I think breeding is natural instinct.

Christ, you're into the deep meaningful thought stuff tonight!

Someone having a wee relaxer!! :)

I don't think that's the case? Isn't that more to do with the biological side of things - mmmm.... would that come under biological, rather than phsyiological. I'm sure it does.

*waits to be corrected*.

I think the thing around love and lust is blurry, it's hard to tell between instinct and emotion. Like I love you but I'm not in love with you kind of thing

Found this link...

Sounds very much like what I was mentioning earlier about the documentary I'd seen..

Interesting...
