About 5mins into the film I was totally in love with it. There was a closeness to it, it felt like really being there, maybe that's because of reading the books. It felt very real.

Yep, she was a brilliant. I think she played a slightly different Katniss from the one in the books. The book one had more self doubt, while the movie one was more compassionate and I thought slightly braver too.

The only other movie I seen Jen in was Winter's Bone, and she was phenomenal in that too.

I thought the same. But maybe it's because you can't hear her thoughts in the film, that it stripped away the self doubt going on in her head?

Hmm I might hive that a watch. :3

Yep true about that. Also when she got Peeta up against the wall after he announced he had a crush on her, she looked as if she was going to kill him. I thought that was good, because she was going into an arena to fight for her life, so it seems like she was capable physically of doing that to someone.

Thats what I thought too. I'm glad they omitted him smashing his hands up. That would've made her look a little too harsh imo.

"the guy who played Haymitch"

THAT GUY IS WOODY HARRELSON, NIALL. *slap*

Anyway it was amazing

I was a little confused by there being a soundtrack when literally not one of the songs was played in the film LOL.

As for the film... there were obviously a lot of minor alterations to the novel (Greasy Sae giving Katniss the pin instead of Madge; Thresh bashing Clove against the cornucopia instead of with a rock; the mutts not having the tributes' qualities about them) but overall I felt it was very true to it.

Snow, Haymitch, Katniss and Prim were all portrayed excellently. Peeta and Gale kinda develop more in the later books so I wasn't too worried by how flimsy Gale was, and Peeta was sweet but a little unconvincing as an infatuated guy.

But the tension, the action and the deaths were amazing  I think Foxface and Rue were a little underused though - Rue was gnawing bones one minute, dead the next - but the deaths :bawling: a couple of us did the three-finger salute LOL

And I actually felt sad for Cato. Not Clove though. Orphan cvnt.

That film was utterly brilliant.

I was enthralled from start to finish. I could not take my eyes off the screen for anything. I just omg.

Elizabeth Banks as Effie was absolutely spot on. She made me laugh so much. The guy who played Haymitch was equally fantastic. As was Cinna. All the supporting cast were almost exactly what I imagined from the book.

The scenes of District 12 and the Capitol were also dead spits of what I'd pictured in my head. I didn't think they looked much like what I'd visualised before when I saw them in the trailer but in the actual movie, they're spot on.

I loved the sort f shift the film underwent from almost lighthearted to extreme seriousness as soon as Katniss emerged in the arena. The omission of noise during the bloodbath only made things all the more engaging. I was looking around to see what was going on. There wasn't much gore (thank God) but the suggestiveness of the actions of the tributes was probably much worse than seeing blood go everywhere.

The tracker jackers scared the sh!te outta me (I have a phobia of wasps/bees). And the hallucination scenes were pretty damn good.

When Rue came into it fully I just started feeling so sad. When Katniss got back to her (after blowing up the Careers' food), and she was speared I almost broke down. If I was on my own I would've been in floods of tears. It was so utterly heart breaking. The singing just exacerbated it all. When they added in that scene of District 11 rioting after, it just made things even more poignant - such a brilliant idea to bring that in.

The cave scenes were also excellent. The 'feast' at the Cornucopia, was again, exactly how I pictured it.

The mutts were utterly terrifying. The little speech Cato made was real sad too.

I think the ending could've been better. They didn't show Katniss putting down Peeta. I thought that was pretty vital tbh. That was my only real discrepancy with the whole film though.

Oh and the way they weaved in the actions of the game makers was fantastic.

Easily my favourite film ever now oh God.

The guy who plays Haymitch???? That's Woody Harrelson!! -slaps you with a glove- He's about thee most famous actor in the bloody film :hmph:

How amazing was the film though????????? :amazed:

I think they showed Rue as much as they could though, besides in the arena but in the training aswell, you could see the little bond beginning between them. The film was over two hours long and tbf to them they fit an awful lot of the book in and I think they did their best with Rue and it still ended up being a powerful and poignant moment in the film

Review!!

Glenn.
24-03-2012, 02:07 AM
From the top of my head.

I was hooked from the minute it started. I loved District 12. It looked old but in a futuristic sort of way. It wasn't what I imagined in the book. It was better.

Effie. OMFG

Exactly how I imagined her. Elizabeth Banks did an amazing job :worship:

Haymitch was played to the letter to. Woody was incredible.

I thought The Reaping was done to perfection and Elizabeth stole the entire scene. She stole every scene she was in.

Jennifer was outstanding throughout the entire film.
I don't think anybody could of played her better than Jennifer did. Josh as Peeta was amazing and Peeta really come across like he did in the book.

Rues death:sad:
This was my favorite part if the entire movie. The sadness and sorrow Jennifer played was top class as was the score. The music was amazing. The salute was so touching I had to pull myself together for fear of blubbing like a baby. I think Rue could if had a better part in the film. I didn't really connect with her like in the book.

The uprising in D11 was a good touch considering the direction of the story.

Now for the niggles I had about the film.

I didn't like the Tribute Parade. I thought the fire looked crappy compared to what it should of looked like. Plus I thought the effects were a little rushed and out of proportion speed wise. It just didn't look right to me.

I didn't like the careers chasing after Katniss. As far as I remember it didn't happen that way. Maybe it did but I can't remember.

Lack of Rue. I know they had a lot to fit in to the film but another 5mins of Rue would of been amazing.

Lack of Peeta losing his leg:nono:

Niggles aside, I loved it so ****in much. It was adapted well and everything was pretty much perfect. Great cast, great everything.

I'm seeing it again tomorrow afternoon with my cousin:D

Niamh.
24-03-2012, 02:11 AM
I agree with everything you said Glenn except :

I'm pretty sure the careers chasing Katniss happened just like that in the book, remember Peeta befriending them to pretend he'd help them find Katniss and Katniss thinking he'd turned on her?

Glenn.

Definitely. I got that when I saw it.

And I was reading Catching Fire on the journey back and showed my friend the bit where the stylists are telling Katniss and Peeta to drink that liquid so they puke and can eat more food and my friend told me that the Romans used to do that.

Shaun

pretty much everything in the book is derived from Roman influence - the cornucopia for example was a festival for feasting, there's a whole range of Catos and the word capitol is from there

Hotly anticipated movie The Hunger Games has smashed US box office records on its opening weekend.

It was the biggest ever opening of a non-sequel movie, raking in an estimated $155m (£100m) in three days.

The film has also been credited with the third best weekend start of all time.

The teen favourite was launched worldwide to massive fanfare and in Britain, amid a period of warm and sunny weather, it still had ticket sales of around £5m.

Box office receipts in Australia - with a third of Britain's population - topped £6m.

The result "shatters expectations", according to Hollywood.com analyst Paul Degerabedian.

Great news, I believe it though, tbh I can't remember the last time I've been to a film that was so packed, people who didn't get there early enough couldn't even get seats together.

Definitely. I got that when I saw it.

And I was reading Catching Fire on the journey back and showed my friend the bit where the stylists are telling Katniss and Peeta to drink that liquid so they puke and can eat more food and my friend told me that the Romans used to do that.

Oh yeah I knew about that too. It's pretty insane when you think that people actually did that. D:

pretty much everything in the book is derived from Roman influence - the cornucopia for example was a festival for feasting, there's a whole range of Catos and the word capitol is from there

It was that really, just the style of the Capitol and it's inhabitants. I think it was all the huge walkways and big stone buildings. And the music too, there were loads of Roman sounding horns I think.

I really liked the film, good acting from the children as well, usually the acting is poor like with Harry Potter

I found it pretty predictable though, I guess that happens when you have a massive protagonist like Katniss

Peeta is a rubbish character. She definitely ends up with the wrong one. The bit that made me upset at the end was the cat coming back.

I can't bear to see animals suffer or in pain, but I can watch films where babies heads get squashed by car pedals. Weird.

I remember my sister taking me to see a Lassie special presentation on a cinema when I was about 7, and we had to leave half way through because I was screaming the cinema down when he got shot.

She's an Avox, they're people who broke the law and had their Tongues cut out and are made servants in the Capital. I presume they just didn't have time to add in that part of the story. It was already a pretty long film.

And I know! But its hard for them to show what Katniss is thinking though I suppose.

I don't know many other forums about this but I had to write about it. I finally bought The Hunger Games book last Monday and just finished reading it and oh my god what a pile of ****e Suzanne Collins is.

I'm quite confused because the central idea and premise is excellent, so much potential and a great idea but it's let down by the absolutely awful writing.

Lack of any description, just jumps from event to event to event half heartedly, zero character development, things that make absolutely no sense. I lost count of the number of times Katniss went to sleep. It felt like night fell every other page.

I'm sure the ending with Katniss and Peeta was supposed to be a shock, but it was awfully predictable and completely crapped over everything that was good about the book.

I won't continue to rant but The Hunger Games is a good idea that could have been excellent if given to a better author. I hope Collins never writes another book in her life. But no doubt she's earned herself a truckload of cash for being an unbelievably mediocre to crap writer.

The Hunger Games are amazing. My favourite reads in a long time! The movie aswell, tbf was very good, was well done and stayed true to the book. Of course, would have loved if it had been longer, but that's always the opinion when watching a film based on a great book! I spent an entire flight reading the first book, even though I was exhausted and everyone else was asleep, but I could not put it down! Already reread all three!

I'm going to watch the film, might rent the DVD. I'm told it's better than the book in a lot of places, so I'm hoping there's more suspense to the movie. The premise is excellent but Collin's writing leaves a lot to be desired.

I Live in America so I bought the DVD from Walmart, everything's that's wrong with this country.

The deluxe DVD version comes with 3 hours of BTH footage and interviews with cast and crew. Funny moment when they were filming the explosion as the last thing for the movie and Jennifer was planning on recording it and she missed it. Hilarious.
