Channel 4 has acquired US sitcom New Girl - tipped as one of the biggest shows to come out of this year’s LA Screenings - and political thriller Homeland.

The deals form part of a five-series deal with Twentieth Century Fox that also includes sitcom Apartment 23 and new animated sitcom’s Napoleon Dynamite and Allen Gregory.

The agreement was brokered by Gill Hay, C4’s head of acquisitions, and Steve Cornish, senior vice president and managing director of 20th Century Fox Television Distribution.

Jay Hunt, C4’s chief creative officer, said that Homeland would air on the terrestrial channel while the others will be scheduled on digital station E4.

“Homeland is a compelling contemporary thriller that will compliment The Killing and both New Girl and Apartment 23 will add to E4’s reputation as the home of the best of US comedy,” said Hunt.

HOMELAND

Homeland stars Claire Danes, Damian Lewis, Mandy Patinkin, and David Harewood and will air on US cable network Showtime this autumn.

The series is loosely based on Gideon Raff’s Israeli television series Prisoners of War, and centres on an American soldier taken prisoner during the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Left for dead, the soldier (Damian Lewis) miraculously returns to the US after years in captivity.

Danes, who won an Emmy and Golden Globe for her leading role in HBO biopic Temple Grandin, plays Carrie Anderson, a driven CIA officer battling her own psychological demons who becomes convinced that the intelligence that led to his rescue was a setup, and that this national hero may be connected to an Al-Qaeda plot to be carried out on American soil.

NEW GIRL

Buyers at the LA Screenings in May tipped New Girl as one of the sitcom’s most likely to prove a breakout hit.

The single-camera comedy stars Zooey Deschanel as Jess Day, a woman in her late 20s who needs to start over following her surprise break-up with her boyfriend.

The 22 x 30-minute series will debut in the US on the Fox network on 20 September.

APARTMENT 23

Another single-camera comedy, Apartment 23 centres on June – played by Dreama Walker – who relocates to New York from the countryside and has to readjust to life in the big city. Her party-girl roommate is played by Breaking Bad’s Krysten Ritter while Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek appears as a fictional version of himself.

The 13 x 30-minute series is not due to air on US network ABC until at least late autumn.

NAPOLEON DYNAMITE/ALLEN GREGORY

An animated version of a cult film, Napolean Dynamite reunites the cast of the high school comedy focussing on the eccentric titular character, voiced by Jon Heder.

US network Fox has ordered an initial run of 13 x 30 minutes and is giving it a Sunday night push at 8.30pm, between The Simpsons and Family Guy, debuting in a mid-season slot.

Superbad star Jonah Hill has written, executive produced and voiced new animated series Allen Gregory, following a precocious seven year-old being raised by his father Richard and his father’s life partner Jeremy.

A 13 x 30-episode run is expected to launch on Fox at the end of October.

NEW show for E4 this is good news
