just post your favourite songs or say why you liked her.
For me her music had a kind of real soul we haven't heard in a long long time. When her vocals were on fire she was untouchable.
The only consolation is that her music will live on forever and the albums she's left us with are absolute classics. No question she will become iconic like so many other artists who died in their creative prime.
RIP Amy

I Heard Love Is Blind is my current fave.
-listening to her albums for the first time in years-
My favourite was probably Tears Dry On Their Own because that's the first one of hers I proper got into. As I recall it was hitting big just about the time she begun her descent into tabloid hell. Great tune. Very uplifting even though it feels like it shouldn't be for some reason.

Her image is incredibly iconic. Plus her music is timeless.
So there's no question she will continue to live on and probably even grow in stature as a music legend. Sometimes an artist has to die before they become fully appreciated. Sad fact.

It's one of those rare albums that you just LOVE every single song. If you get me? Usually there are 1 or 2 you don't care about much but she was just incredible and that album was her talent condensed.

:nono: Its sold that many just in 2007 when it was the years biggest album.
It was the best-selling album in the UK in 2007, selling 1.85 million copies over the year
its sold over 3 million in the UK alone now. Plus it had massive international success in 2007/8.

Somebody posted this in the other thread(I think Jack) but I've just read it elsewhere and think it's just the best tribute I've read so far: so succinct, poignant and heartfelt.
Russell Brands tribute
When you love someone who suffers from the disease of addiction you await the phone call. There will be a phone call. The sincere hope is that the call will be from the addict themselves, telling you they've had enough, that they're ready to stop, ready to try something new. Of course though, you fear the other call, the sad nocturnal chime from a friend or relative telling you it's too late, she's gone.
Frustratingly it's not a call you can ever make it must be received. It is impossible to intervene.
I've known Amy Winehouse for years. When I first met her around Camden she was just some twit in a pink satin jacket shuffling round bars with mutual friends, most of whom were in cool Indie bands or peripheral Camden figures Withnail-ing their way through life on impotent charisma. Carl Barrat told me that "Winehouse" (which I usually called her and got a kick out of cos it's kind of funny to call a girl by her surname) was a jazz singer, which struck me as a bizarrely anomalous in that crowd. To me with my limited musical knowledge this information placed Amy beyond an invisible boundary of relevance; "Jazz singer? She must be some kind of eccentric" I thought. I chatted to her anyway though, she was after all, a girl, and she was sweet and peculiar but most of all vulnerable.
I was myself at that time barely out of rehab and was thirstily seeking less complicated women so I barely reflected on the now glaringly obvious fact that Winehouse and I shared an affliction, the disease of addiction. All addicts, regardless of the substance or their social status share a consistent and obvious symptom; they're not quite present when you talk to them. They communicate to you through a barely discernible but un-ignorable veil. Whether a homeless smack head troubling you for 50p for a cup of tea or a coked-up, pinstriped exec foaming off about his "speedboat" there is a toxic aura that prevents connection. They have about them the air of elsewhere, that they're looking through you to somewhere else they'd rather be. And of course they are. The priority of any addict is to anaesthetise the pain of living to ease the passage of the day with some purchased relief.
From time to time I'd bump into Amy she had good banter so we could chat a bit and have a laugh, she was "a character" but that world was riddled with half cut, doped up chancers, I was one of them, even in early recovery I was kept afloat only by clinging to the bodies of strangers so Winehouse, but for her gentle quirks didn't especially register.
Then she became massively famous and I was pleased to see her acknowledged but mostly baffled because I'd not experienced her work and this not being the 1950's I wondered how a "jazz singer" had achieved such cultural prominence. I wasn't curious enough to do anything so extreme as listen to her music or go to one of her gigs, I was becoming famous myself at the time and that was an all consuming experience. It was only by chance that I attended a Paul Weller gig at the Roundhouse that I ever saw her live.
I arrived late and as I made my way to the audience through the plastic smiles and plastic cups I heard the rolling, wondrous resonance of a female vocal. Entering the space I saw Amy on stage with Weller and his band; and then the awe. The awe that envelops when witnessing a genius. From her oddly dainty presence that voice, a voice that seemed not to come from her but from somewhere beyond even Billie and Ella, from the font of all greatness. A voice that was filled with such power and pain that it was at once entirely human yet laced with the divine. My ears, my mouth, my heart and mind all instantly opened. Winehouse. Winehouse? Winehouse! That twerp, all eyeliner and lager dithering up Chalk Farm Road under a back-combed barnet, the lips that I'd only seen clenching a fishwife fag and dribbling curses now a portal for this holy sound. So now I knew. She wasn't just some hapless wannabe, yet another pissed up nit who was never gonna make it, nor was she even a ten-a-penny-chanteuse enjoying her fifteen minutes. She was a ********** genius.
Shallow fool that I am I now regarded her in a different light, the light that blazed down from heaven when she sang. That lit her up now and a new phase in our friendship began. She came on a few of my TV and radio shows, I still saw her about but now attended to her with a little more interest. Publicly though, Amy increasingly became defined by her addiction. Our media though is more interested in tragedy than talent, so the ink began to defect from praising her gift to chronicling her downfall. The destructive personal relationships, the blood soaked ballet slippers, the aborted shows, that youtube madness with the baby mice. In the public perception this ephemeral tittle-tattle replaced her timeless talent. This and her manner in our occasional meetings brought home to me the severity of her condition. Addiction is a serious disease; it will end with jail, mental institutions or death. I was 27 years old when through the friendship and help of Chip Somers of the treatment centre, Focus12 I found recovery, through Focus I was introduced to support fellowships for alcoholics and drug addicts which are very easy to find and open to anybody with a desire to stop drinking and without which I would not be alive.
Now Amy Winehouse is dead, like many others whose unnecessary deaths have been retrospectively romanticised, at 27 years old. Whether this tragedy was preventable or not is now irrelevant. It is not preventable today. We have lost a beautiful and talented woman to this disease. Not all addicts have Amy's incredible talent. Or Kurt's or Jimi's or Janis's, some people just get the affliction. All we can do is adapt the way we view this condition, not as a crime or a romantic affectation but as a disease that will kill. We need to review the way society treats addicts, not as criminals but as sick people in need of care. We need to look at the way our government funds rehabilitation. It is cheaper to rehabilitate an addict than to send them to prison, so criminalisation doesn't even make economic sense. Not all of us know someone with the incredible talent that Amy had but we all know drunks and junkies and they all need help and the help is out there. All they have to do is pick up the phone and make the call. Or not. Either way, there will be a phone call.

just saw this russell brand tribute and thought it was very well written.
just remembered she actually won 5 grammys. Wow such a waste. It's true that its impossible to intervene unless the troubled person is the one willing to change but I wonder if anybody really tried hard enough. Like that Belgrade clip, she was clearly unwell and all the manager or whoever the tall black guy was that kept shoving the mike back in her face cared about was her performing.

Adele's tribute
Not many people have it in them to do something they love, simply because they love it. With no fuss and no compromise. But she knew what she was capable of and didn’t even need to try. If she wanted to do something she would and if she didn’t she’d say fck off. It came easy to her and that’s why we all loved her so much. We believed every word she wrote, and it would sink in deep when she sang them. Amy paved the way for artists like me and made people excited about british music again whilst being fearlessly hilarious and blase about the whole thing. I don’t think she ever realised just how brilliant she was and how important she is, but that just makes her even more charming. Although im incredibly sad about Amy passing im also reminded of how immensely proud of her I am as well. and grateful to be inspired by her. Amy flies in paradise xx

I'm incredibly sad. I didn't know her but I met her a few times and got to hear her sing before she blew up. She was a beautiful and talented girl. I'm angry. What a waste of a gifted person. What a shame she saw no hope and continued living her life in that manor [sic]. I have been that low emotionally and mentally and that is overwhelming. I keep asking myself why some of us are spared and the others are made examples. I'm very angry and sad. I don't know why it's bothering me so much. Sometimes I think this job will be the death of us all, or at least the emotional death of us all ... My thoughts and prayers are with her friends and family. I am so sorry for your loss. I pray for peace in your hearts.

Sharon Osbourne
Discussing Winehouse's passing on The Talk, Osbourne said, "She (Kelly)'s not doing good. She left for England. Right now they think the funeral's on Wednesday... She's with Amy's mum, they're doing shiva at the house. She's there with all the girls that used to hang out (with Winehouse)."
The Osbourne matriarch also recalled the first time Kelly brought Winehouse over to their L.A. home and remembered the troubled singer as a "sweetheart of a girl".
She added, "She was your regular, little girl... When we first met her she drank a lot, but we thought, you know, she's young, she's enjoying her life, she's finding her path, she'll get over that. But then it was the drugs. I never saw that side of her."
And Osbourne claimed she felt most for Winehouse's sick mother, Janis, as she prepares to say goodbye to her beloved daughter for the last time.
She said, "I feel for her mum especially because her mum suffers from MS (multiple sclerosis), so she's not strong... She's not doing good. Her mum knew it was going to happen; her dad knew. It was just time."
note: the funerals actually tuesday apparently. There will be a private ceremony at an undisclosed location.

Is Amy's music even classed as pop? I'd say it was jazz.
Either way, Lady Gaga overdoing it again. Changed pop music forever? Hardly.
She was good but didn't have the chance to make any lasting mark in music. She herself will probably though.

I'm not dissing her music, it was/is great.
But changed music forever? No.
You have to draw the line between honouring/respecting the dead and blowing their importance and life out of proportion.
Like Jade Goody was vilified by the press and couldn't do anything right in their eyes. Yet, as soon as she dies they completely change their view of her.

she had an amazing personality. I'm sure that's the part her family and friends miss far more than her musical genius.

^^ aw :(
was just watching this episode of beverly hills 90210 and thought of Amy. The main female character got hooked fast on cocaine. This scene just shows how her dearest friend tries to help after he hears that she's just getting worst with her addiction. Btw like Blake got Amy into drugs, Kellys bf got her into it.

Lady Gaga has spoken out about the Amy Winehouse’s tragic death and told fans not to ‘kill the superstar’.
‘It's a lesson to the world. Don't kill the superstar, take care of her soul.’
Gaga also said she loved Amy ‘so much’ and revealed that she used to get mistaken for the soul singer before she became famous; ‘I was nobody when she was first coming out. I would be on the street and people would go "Amy"'.
‘I just remember feeling like I wasn't alone because she was so different.’
The Born This Way singer made the comments during an interview on U.S. radio show, Omaha 94.1 Radio yesterday.

I think it's because retailers didn't have many physical copies in stock, so they'll have all sold out pretty quick, it'll take a couple of days for them to be properly stocked

Oh Amy, Amy, Amy...
I remember reading an interview where she said, "If I were to die tomorrow, I'd be a happy girl".
She was an addict that didn't want to get better. I can respect that.
Anyway, 2 of my favourites... Just Friends and Stronger Than Me.

*ignores the Adele dig*
well there seems to be more than one version so that splits sales. Plus over 3 million already have it.
Its not like Michael Jacksons material where people had most of his old songs on cds or even records so then replaced it all in digital DLs.

Amys dad Mitch handed out some of her possessions to fans waiting outside her house. Her famous vests and pumps were just some of the items snatched up by surprised onlookers.
I think its a really nice idea and done because he genuinely thought it's what Amy would want. However, I can't help feeling that they'll end up on ebay soon. Some of those outside may not even be her biggest fans just casual gawpers. Maybe he should have given them to fan club members or something.
Oh well, theyll probably end up with fans anyways.

Im sure Adele is happy for her to have it too.
Plus #5 with Frank and #10 with Frank/B2B
Adele & Amy both have 2 albums in top 5. That must be a first.

Frank's highest peak since being on sale in 2003 too, great feat. Plus Back to Black, the song, beat it's previous chart position too, which is great. I always felt sad that it never made the top 10.
