Forum/Board Moderators?

I've seen quite a few forums who have this where members are made moderators of certain forums/boards (like purely for example: ukturtle, moderator of Creative Writing & Books; Shaun, moderator of Music, etc.) and I was wondering if this was something that could happen on TiBB?

I think it could be quite a good idea and would give more members the oppurtunity to have a taste of what it's like being a mod. There could be applications for it and current staff would choose who managed each board, and rather than being in charge of the whole place, they'd just be managing the board they were assigned with.

I don't see any need to be changing the moderating system to be honest, especially so close to bb starting and just because someone is active a lot in one section of the forum doesn't mean they would be suitable to moderate it.

I don't like the idea of specialised mods but I like the thought of refreshing them. I do feel with the oncoming storm that is on season we might need some new blood on the mod team, I shall treat it like the X Factor.

I don't see why a sub-section needs its own MOD. We MODs don't need to understand the sub-section on the forum eg. the artist that a thread is about, to understand that somebody in it is spamming or being rude/swearing/insults etc.

It's odd. You get the sense that we have too many mods and not enough mods all at the same time.

The moderating should be condensed down to three of four people who mod like clockwork. Not a dozen or so people who each kind of chip in every now and then like some bizarre community building project or something.

A few of the mods wield about as much authority as Mr. Bean charing a United Nations meeting. The whole anonymity of 'TiBB Staff' doesn't help considering it's taking the credit for most of the harsh moderating but I realize it needs to be there.

Trouble is you lot base your judgements on us from what you see. You don't see most of the stuff we actually do. Not complaining, as that's part of the job, but sometimes we get given grief about doing naff all when in reality we are doing more than some members think. Like Vicky said though, we are not going to shout about everytime we ban, infract, warn, merge, delete, edit, organise etc.

Seriously unimpressed with that comment about being drunk/high and spamming - I have a post rate of 5.03 a day, I haven't been drunk since May, I've never been high in my life and I don't spam. As moderators we get a lot of **** from you lot and very little thanks - is it any wonder we don't make a point of shouting about what we do individually as moderators? That's why TiBB Staff is there, so moderators don't get picked on for doing what they are supposed to do.

It's like saying that a certain member may only post in one board, etc. Mods are entitled to post in any board, and they can deal with people in the boards they see. Good idea, but the method we've got now is better, IMO.

There would still be global moderators, but in addition there would be separate board moderators just giving extra help in sections they were assigned with, as global mods having to do everything at once can't be easy. People haven't warmed to the idea though so that's fine :tongue:

I think we should have elections for mods. Every 6 months, we should have an election to replace 2 mods. The mods that have the lowest votes should be booted out, and then we have an election to select 2 new mods.

It doesn't now, but if there was an election for members to choose mods, it would be likely the most popular members would be made mods and not necessarily the best members for the job.

Oh yeah for that I agree. The best way to have mods is to monitor members over a period of time and base the decision on their activity, their general rapport on the forum, how strict we think they would be as well as fair and the time of day they are usually on.

Yeah, she definitely had her hands full! oh Zee was around too (apologies Greg!) but yeah alot of mods became inactive so I think that's why they made so many of us..........then Marc and Ben came back :joker: though it works well I think, there's usually one or two of us atleast online at a time

We are not, although the times we are on improved our chances. I was brought to the mod team for being fairly active, having a good rapport with the forum and because I'm usually active between 1AM - 7AM when most of the others are sleeping. Wheras someone like Niamh, for example, is more active during the daytime.

You're a junior member if you're under 100 posts. After that, you become senior. Then, gradually, you just become a member.

I think admin should put together a survey that members could complete in confidence covering Mods roles and duties, feelings and issues. But only if they are really prepared to listen and take things on board, not just close ranks and dismiss any criticisms.

I've brought stuff up a couple of times with James and Kaz when I've not been happy with the outcome of issue, and had no acknowledgement or response whatsoever, which is kind of frustrating, as surely without members being happy, the atmosphere of any forum would be affected.

A shake up would do no harm.
