A glossy remake of ‘70s TV series Charlie’s Angels has been acquired for broadcast by Channel 4.

The broadcaster has acquired the UK rights from Sony Pictures Television and will air the series on digital channel E4.

Like the original, it focuses on three women – a former police officer, a mysterious street racer and a thief – who are given chance at redemption when they are recruited by the exclusive Townsend Detective Agency.

Kate, Eve and Abby – played by Annie Ilonzeh, Minka Kelly and Rachael Taylor – turn their unique skills to crime fighting, under the watchful eye of millionaire Charles Townsend.

Gill Hay, head of acquisitions for C4, negotiated the deal and described the new series as “a light-hearted, high-kicking romp with all the glitz, glamour and beautiful crimefighters you would expect from a US remake of the iconic original”.

Unlike the original, which aired from 1976 to 1981 set in Los Angeles, the new series is based in Miami.

It will debut in the US on the ABC network in an 8pm slot on 22 September – the 35th anniversary of the debut of the original show, which starred Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith.

Executive producers are Al Gough and Miles Millar, writers of Spider-Man 2 and Smallville, the Superman series that is currently in its final season on E4.

Other executive producers are Leonard Goldbert, Nancy Juvonen, Marcos Siega and actress Drew Barrymore, who starred in two Charlie’s Angels films released in 2000 and 2003.

The series is produced by Millar/Gough Ink, Flower Films and Panda Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television.
