Katy Perry has become the first female artist to achieve five Hot 100 number ones from a single album.
The singer has managed to top the Hot 100 chart this week with her latest single 'Last Friday Night', after releasing a remix featuring Missy Elliot last week, reports Billboard.
The remix accounted for 25% of the song's overall digital sales, while the original track remains atop the US radio songs listings.
Perry has now matched a record set by Michael Jackson in 1987-88, when the late King of Pop produced five chart-toppers from his multi-million-selling album Bad.
Perry and Jackson are the only two artists to have reached the landmark in the Billboard Hot 100's 53-year-long history
The five singles - 'California Gurls', 'Teenage Dream', 'Firework', 'E.T.' and 'Last Friday Night' - have all been lifted from Perry's second studio album Teenage Dream.
The album topped both the US Billboard 200 and the UK album chart upon its release last August and has more than 2.2 million combined sales in the territories.
I like her music but I think it's a shame she's equalled his record. Also rather unfair that she released the TGIF remix last week, just to get this record, shows how desperate her team were for this.

Bloody ridiculous how everyone is re-releasing their songs just with a slightly different verse with some rapper.
TGIF shoulda gone to number 1 anyway, whereas ET & Firework did not deserve #1.

Why wouldn't they be desperate? She was in a position to set a record that is very difficult to equal or beat, good on her for doing it, I say. I do find it surprising that she's managed to set the record, but so what? She did it, and nobody can take it away from her, I really like Katy Perry. In fact, I like all of the songs bar California Gurls from that album to have been released, haha.

I agree that it was a reasonable thing for them to do. But ET shouldn't have been #1, wasn't overly great. But well done to her!

E.T. is her best single imo, even though I hate the remix with Kanye West.
I like most of her songs but c,mon! Beyonce and Lady Gaga are waaaaay better than her! She doesnt really deserve it :/

MJ didn't need to resort to desperation like this though, his songs all went to number one because they were great songs which people enjoyed. He didn't need to add a rapper to any of his songs to make them number one. Katy Perry's songs are mediocre at best. This is the third number one single from her which features a rapper too, so again just proves her label's desperation.

What a pathetic argument, what does the era have to do with anything? Yes, times have changed but good songs can still get to number one without the need for a rapper.

TGIF is the worst song she has ever made and it does not deserve it.

That's fairly insulting rap music... The era has a lot to do with everything. We are in an age where songs are leaked and are readily available to the public en masse; there's a lot more competition and much less tolerance for failure, so I think it's entirely fair enough that people do whatever they can to get to #1. Why's everyone rolling their eyes that she did it? If you had a chance to become part of history, wouldn't you do your best to do it?

To be honest, E.T. was released as a single with a rapper, so we didn't get to see without Kanye. California Gurls was released with a rapper, so we didn't get to see without Snoop. So, basically you can't say that California Gurls went to number 1 because of a rapper, because that isn't proved. E.T. wasn't released without Kanye, as I've already said, so it can't be proved that the rapper is the reason of the number 1. Firework and Teenage Dream do not have rappers, and managed to get to number 1. Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.) was sitting at number 2 for weeks without a rapper, was just missing out on number 1. As soon as the Missy version was released it went to number 1. Which as revealed, was only 25% of the songs sales.
These songs do not need a rapper to get to number 1, except Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.) but that's because it was being held off of number 1, so the rapper helped in its sales. That's great. But I don't believe that songs need a rapper to go to number 1, that statement is ridiculous :laugh2:

And again... what's wrong with rap music? It's about widening appeal; if you can get fans of rap and pop to buy into your music, you will have more success than if you target just one of those areas. It's just business, at the end of the day. She's clearly doing something right and I don't really get the backlash against her for setting this record, good on her!!

E.T & T.G.I.F wouldn't have gone to #1 if she hadn't released them with a rapper to gain urban spins
Pretty desperate tbh

Seriously, how is she still selling that many singles? Album sales must be awful saying as clearly no-one is buying it. :suspect:
