View Full Version : Celebrity Big Brother loses 2m viewers on second night

Celebrity Big Brother lost a significant portion of its viewing audience last night, overnight data reveals.

For an edition which saw Kerry Katona, Bobby Sabel and Sally Bercow put up for eviction, the Channel 5 reality show averaged 3.22m (14.8%) in the 9pm hour, a drop of nearly 2m on Thursday's premiere night.

While Celebrity Big Brother experienced an even greater dip at the start of its last series on Channel 4 in 2010, the broadcaster will be hoping the show steadies, as channel executive Richard Desmond recently stated that he did not expect the show to fall under 3m.

Gavin Henson-headed reality show The Bachelor followed CBB with a respectable 1.33m (7.8%) in the 10pm hour, then Celebrity Big Brother's Bit on the Side with Emma Willis had 676k (6.4%) from 11pm.

BBC One was the only channel ahead of Channel 5 in the 9pm hour, as My Family and Miranda dipped to 3.7m (17%) and 3.66m (16.9%), while ITV1's Somebody's Daughter, Somebody's Son could only muster 2.43m (11.1%) and 136k on +1.

Channel 4's lineup suffered, as 8 Out of 10 Cats and Chris Moyles' Quiz Night took 1.12m (5.1%) at 9pm (+1: 281k) and 958k (4.7%) at 9.45pm (+1: 276k).

Come Dine with Me, meanwhile, showed its resilience with 1.31m (6.1%) at 8pm (+1: 148k) against the opening Gadget Show episode on 5, which interested 968k (4.5%).

Over on BBC Two, Gardeners' World logged 1.77m (8.1%) at 8.30pm, then India on Four Wheels captured 2.2m (10.1%) in the 9pm hour and The Rob Brydon Show entertained 1.56m (8.2%) at 10pm.

Overall, ITV1 predictably led primetime with 19.4% (+1: 0.5%) against BBC One's 19.2%. Channel 5 claimed third place with 8.4%, ahead of BBC Two's 6.9% and Channel 4's 5% (0.8%).

I think this is pretty good, there is always a drop in ratings on the 1st few nights.
However Desmond saying he doubts it will go below 3 million is crazy!

3+ million is still an excellent figure, that's what many thought would be for the openeing night with a fall following the next night.

That is a really good figure indeed.

I wouldn't call 3 million or even 2 million+ on Channel 5 as people not watching.

This :)

Launch nights always get more viewers than the rest of the series, it's no big deal. I expected it to drop much lower than 3+ :)

I Hope channel 5 continue to beat channel 4 in the ratings over the next few months :)

I hope channel 5 bring back livefeed, and over editing.

for the sake and future of big brother

I think Big Brother needs a break and a serious revamp otherwise it's going to be the same every year, with idiots winning due the general reputation of the show.

I think they need to change the show completely although they might get lucky again like they did in 2009, depends on the housemates, last year was shockingly bad.

agree, im glad its save.
Look at last year, all the hms that where remotll entertaining where evicted or left:
Shabby, ceeva, corin, sam pepper, ben, Govan (hated govan but he bitched), shunshine

Then we are left with Mario, andrew, jj (These people where nice but dull and boring)

Personally I think that is pretty good. I expected them to lose more viewers than that.

The launch show always gets more viewers as people decide if they are going to watch. In this case there was the extra interest because it was on a new channel that added to the figures.

I just hope they can keep it around the 2.5 million mark. There is going to be a lot of competition with the autumn schedules kicking in.

Sorry to say but this is going to steadily decline in about 4-5 weeks and dwindle down to numbers like 1.x million.

Well yes that is still a big number but then you have the exact same issue as C4 - would 'anything else' do just as much or more?

That is what I fear will happen too, but you have remember even at that level it is still a big audience for Channel 5, so it doesn't mean they will pull the show or the deal to make the shows they have agreed to. The production company will have a nice agreement which means they get paid in some way if the channel pulls out of the show for whatever reason.

Well yes that is still a big number but then you have the exact same issue as C4 - would 'anything else' do just as much or more?

I think you also have to remember the timing here when looking at the ratings. The show is normally shown in the quieter times of the year. Over the summer when there isn't much on and just after Christmas when things go quiet after the channels spends loads on the programmes for the holidays. In the autumn the channels always fight for the audience with the big programmes, like the X-Factor, and Big Brother has been placed to fight it out with them. It is bound to take a hit just because of it's placement in the schedules.

I really don't think the live feed issue affects many, to be honest, but the die hard fans. They will only gain a handful of viewers that aren't watch because they sulking because there is no live feed.

After all the this place is hardly representative of all of the majority of people that watch the show. We are the die hard fans that have in many cases been watching it for years.

What do you mean might get lucky like 2009?

2009 was the least watched BB of all time.

Because I loved the channel 4 series and this series isn't up to any standard that I had of the show. And its been two days I give opinions based on what I've seen but I am giving it a chance to change. And I will moan about it if I want to moan about it.

I wasn't even saying Xtrafactor should stop people watching Big Brother I was saying it will stop people watching tonight because the public prefer XF. Thats just the truth.

EDIT: Plus I didn't sign up during this series so its not like I only joined to moan. I joined because I loved the show. I don't love this show.

I don't like some of the change's myself, i couldn't care less about them if we had live feed, which is the hole point of Big Brother.
And yeah many people would rather watch X Factor then BB which sucks, but i don't see the X Factor doing very well this year with the new judges

They were always going to lose viewers on the second night but 3m is still great going for C5.
I think a lot of people were disappointed with the initial 11 that went in. I was sad that Charlie Sheen had not gone in! I am sticking with it for now, as I like Sally Bercow but once she goes, I have to decide whether or not I want to bother watching the rest of them

The ratings were quite good due to a well done advertising campaign. They really put more effort in than channel 4 the last few years. But the show itself, so far, is ****. That's why the viewers are vanishing now. Hopefully it will get better.
