Australia put on an inspirational display in Brisbane to beat New Zealand and secure their first Tri-Nations title since 2001 and only third ever.

The Wallabies led 20-3 at the break courtesy of tries from Will Genia and Radike Samo, who ran in from 60m.

The All Blacks hit back to level the scores after an hour, with Conrad Smith and Ma'a Nonu both crossing for tries.

However, the hosts swiftly responded and Kurtley Beale scored a try against the run of play to seal the win.

Australia's first win over the All Blacks in Brisbane for 19 years came after the Wallabies were thumped 30-14 by the All Blacks in Auckland three weeks ago and is a big psychological blow ahead of the Word Cup, which kicks off in New Zealand in a fortnight.

Tri Nation results

23 July: Australia 39-20 SA
30 July: New Zealand 40-7 SA
6 August: NZ 30-14 Australia
13 August: SA 9-14 Australia
20 August: SA 18-5 New Zealand
27 August: Australia 25-20 NZ

Still don't think New Zealand will justify being odds on favourites, Wonder what odds you can get on any European team winning the world cup hopefully about 5 or 6/1

Just finished watching the final. 8-7 All blacks win. What an effort by France. They almost pulled it off in the end. I think they were hard done by, with the last penalty for NZ. France had the last drive, all the way past to the All Blacks 22, but NZ stole the ball in the melee somehow. I still dont know how it happened. But, it was a great scrappy game! The only one I managed to wake up and watch in the World cup, and it was pretty worth it! :)

What a terrible match, I have no idea how you can say it was worth it

Terrible! Why, because there were not a lot of points. I like a good scrap. The two teams, have a great defense, so it was very difficult to make anything happen. The game was won by inches. To me, thats better than some 27 -3 blowout! France was driving for the winning try, or drop shot, until they lost the ball in the end. That was a great finish!

Well done to New Zealand because honestly, they did so well during this World Cup. They deserved it so much.

But that mother****ing South African white trash referee was so unfair throughout all the game. He made bad ass mistakes of judgement at times.

But anyway, France played so well, they kept the pressure against the All Blacks and are very respectable and humble finalists. We deserved it for sure and losing for 1 point is terrible but at the end of the day, we nailed the final so we are all proud of ourselves.

See you in 4 years in England!!!!
