View Full Version : Facebook Storm: Man posing with dead child?

A photograph uploaded on Facebook of a white South African man posing like a hunter near an apparently lifeless body of a black child has created a furore as South African police try track him down.

Facebook picture that has sparked a police investigation: The authorities have asked members of the public who can identify the man in this picture to come forward to assist them in their investigation. The child's face is hidden to protect his identity.
The man has a Facebook user profile with the name "Eugene Terrorblanche," an apparent play on the name of Eugene Terreblanche, an extremist Afrikaner leader murdered last year, and has 590 "friends" as of Saturday. Authorities are yet to confirm the authenticity of the undated picture and have not ruled out the possibility of photograph manipulation.

According to the South Africa Sunday Times, which first reported the story, the search is now on for the person or persons responsible for the picture, for whoever created the user profile and for those who have seen the photograph but failed to report it.

Surprisingly, the photo was uploaded June 24, 2010, but went little noticed until now. It took more than a year to be spotted by authorities as none who saw the picture reported it or posted a comment condemning it.

Regardless of whether the picture is fake, "everyone party to the posting" and those who have viewed the image are under a potential prosecution threat, authorities said.

Human rights groups have expressed their concern for the child in the picture who could have been wounded or dead.

The director of Women + Men Against Child Abuse, Miranda Jordan, said she found it "incredibly disturbing" not knowing the child's fate.

"I couldn't believe what I was seeing ... this is sickening and disgusting. Is this child hurt? Is he dead? Who would take this kind of picture?" she said. "This hate image incites racism that almost all South Africans have fought so hard to eradicate."

Minister of Police Nathi Mthethwa's spokesman, Zweli Mnisi, said the minister has ordered an "immediate investigation" and called on the man in the picture - or anyone who recognized him - to come forward to assist in the probe.

Paddy, this is serious. It's started a whole new racism campaign in SA, which over there racism is still a huge problem.

Indeed, the fact that so many people saw it and did nothing about it. makes you wonder how uncaring /unconcerned the world can sometimes be.

Honestly I don't think the pic is real, or if it is then it probably won't actually be the guy who's Facebook it is. It sounds like a fake account to me, parodying that South African White Supremacist who they mentioned in the article

Either way though, it's a disgusting thing to do

I cannot believe the callousness of some people's comments. That child was still a living being who may have suffered pain and exploitation. There is a time and a place to joke and add in sarcastic comments, this is thread is not that place.

If a Monkey could post on TIBB this is what he would say

Its true! I know its mean but theres 7 billion other people in the world.. and life goes on

Although he would likely not realize the meanness of his comment. 1-0 to Bubbles?

Surely it doesn't take long in life to understand why an Orphans death is important. And how not caring about an Orphans death will ultimately make it more likely to happen closer to home. And that caring ONLY about the people you love is not enough to call yourself a "Decent Human Being"

If you die without getting it then you may just as well of lived your life as a Monkey. Humans have been given a natural gift to be able to think about things that don't directly impact our lives. Society has given us a gift to empathize. Put them together and you hate the idea of what that man appears to be doing. Take them away or split them up and the effect is evident. Please tell me you are only 12 Saph or you are the first Monkey to ever post on TIBB

Linguistically a Fool will get this Quote.

"Any society, any nation, is judged on the basis of how it treats its weakest members -- the last, the least, the littlest."

No im not, sorry to burst your bubble :flowers: and if thats how you feel about the situation then thats fine.. my opinion is that I didnt know that child so I feel no compassion or sadness when I see that photo. I cant help it if you (and others) think that im a fool or that im a 12 year old monkey or whatever, but im not gonna act like I care when I dont. Sorry if thats not what you want to hear but im going to discuss how I feel about it on a discussion forum. Just because me and other people dont share the same grief you might, it doesnt make us fools.. and I stand by what I said, death is sad but life goes on and the world keeps spinning.

Stu
30-08-2011, 09:53 PM
There is a difference between not feeling grief and what you said. None of us feel huge grief over the death of a single child in Africa. None of us mourn one African child on a personal level. What you said was 'it's not exactly a loss'.

I know you aren't the brains of the operation but even by your standards it was an idiotic and completely uncalled for thing to say. I can't see why you would bother even going there. A child is a child. Lay off for **** sake.

Zippy

nobody cares whether you feel anything.

Your crime was posting an insensitive and offensive remark implying that small boy was worthless. No he certainly was not. He could have grown up to be the most powerful person in his country. Now we'll never know.

Stop trying to be controversial for the sake of it because you made a flop joke. It's a pointless thing to put energy into typing on an internet forum. It would be like me going in to a 7/7 thread or the thread about Kerry's dead dog and loudly proclaiming 'none of them matter to me anyway'. I'd be crucified for it and rightly so.

No one is saying we feel a personal loss, there is no grieving process, or condolences to be sent. Decent people hate the idea of a Man hunting Children, and this is where we are expressing those opinions and feelings.

Seriously they need to teach Social Studies in school because so many people are just opting out of a natural take up of the idea

youre on a ****ing big brother forum
why are you pretending to care

"Serious Debate" it's a clue!

would you prefer a Forum labelled "Serious Debates" containing 30 posts that joked about that picture? or a new Sub-Forum for that purpose? and what shall we call it.....?, and would the title offend all but the most callous of us.

We're not. We care about the Social Fabric of Our World Just as a Mother cares about the Social Fabric of a Home, without which, more than already do would have no food, or be beaten by a Father, or not need to go to school, or grow Obese, or turn to Crime, or Riot without reason, or Hunt Children... it is a long list, really!

Sorry if i sound like i'm lecturing, that's just my way.
