View Full Version : BBUK on C5, a bit of BBUS?

So us BBUS fans can't help but notice all the BBUS features the new Channel 5 show have adopted from BBUS....The music, the name tags, the flashbacks, the memory wall, the incongruent diary room sessions...
And last night another copy from BBUS, they brought in a competition to watch a movie and meet the stars of the movie...
Did you guys also think BBUS the minute you saw that last night?
What do you think of Channel 5 copying so many things from BBUS, is it making the BBUK better?
Personally i'd prefer BBUK stayed BBUK and BBUS stayed BBUS, I like them both for very different reasons, and i don't like seeing so much BBUS in BBUK.

I've never watched BBUS but I really don't like the changes you listed, I think it's making the show look tacky and too far away from what it was :(

Yeah I did
Didnt bother me too much really, Im sort of over the fact BB has to be completely sheltered from the outside world as long as they dont find out info I dont care about guests.
The show has to develop.

I've noticed all the similarities too, I can see why they've tried to make it more like the US version though because the American version is much more successful than ours, in terms of ratings, it still gets 7-8 million per episode and it's in it's 13th season. I don't like the use of current music in our version, I love the dramatic tension music they use in BBUS, but I don't think it would work over here. I kinda preferred how BBUK was before though.
Yeah it has a fair few BB US features

Yeah but you have to take into account that there are many, many more people in the US. There are 8 Million people in New York alone, that's one state/city. So the percentage is roughly the same, if not worse.
As far as the changes I wish they would implement the one that really would freshen up the show. Keep the format, keep the style. But use the BBUSA rules and have a gameplayer in there. See if people like it and see the drama it causes. Imagine for instance if fights like BBUSA gets weekly happened on the UK show. Fight night would be a lost memory and I think the infamous caused would bring new eyes to the screen to see the new "game" being played as most have never seen before.

Yes, but you ALSO have to take into account that there are more Channels in the US, so we have more to choose from. So the argument that there are more people is basically nullified by the fact there are also far more channels.

I'd go along with these comments too.
I am happy the way it's going anyway.

Fair point but you have to keep in mind that "success" in terms of TV viewership is different in the UK and US, and it even varies by season (summer vs. the rest of the year, for example). On average people watch less TV in summer, so consistent viewing figures of 7-8 million for a show that airs 3x a week is pretty stunningly good. BBUS wins the ratings most of the nights it airs, it's pretty much CBS's summer staple.

I have never watched BBUSA basically because I dont like the production style or game play of it. Now that BBUK is turning into something similar to that it saddens me as the show I loved has turned tacky and it seems to not let you get involved in it or addicted. I would prefer BBUK stayed as it was and hadn't made all these changes as it was fine and rated better when it was itself.

Understand that, CharlieO, but in reality, BBUS is a far superior game. The only chance BBUK has is if it starts to take a leaf from that book. I genuinely loathe most US converts from UK shows. But this did and does it better.

I agree with both of you guys. The highlights shows that air thrice weekly on CBS are pretty OTT and sometimes annoyingly so, but it's really those shows coupled with the live feed (which is more comprehensive and all-inclusive than BBUK's ever was), along with the "strategy" elements of the game, that make the experience.

I think that's why I could care less about the UK Live feed. When stuff happens on the US one, they show it. They don't switch to the birds.

American television has WAAYY more channels though and therefore much stronger competition amongst other shows on at the same time.
8 million viewers for any US show is very, very good. Especially one of like Big Brother that airs during the summer and 3 times a week.

I would love for the UK version to take the US format have the HOH, Power of Veto, talk about nominations It would provide so much arguments and entertainment. I would love to see alliances for the UK BB :D Can you imagine the UK BB cast when its announced there is a task waiting for them to win HOH and that person decides who is up for nomination :D It would create a Game Finally which imo BB should be done.
I also would love to see the tasks similar to BB US there tasks are actually great and interesting to watch and they put alot of money into most of there tasks.
And if HM fail a task put them on slop, put them on camp beds and have cold showers.

BBUS isn't a convert from the BBUK show, actually BBUS began before BBUK. It's a convert from the Dutch show.

I don't think a REAl BBUS style show would work with British people. They tried a British Survivor, and it wasn't very good. I think for some reason British people are just not very competitive, they are too worried about being "moral"(or the illusion of being moral) even on a game show.

yeah thats the downfall :( People care too much what the public think to play a game.
But i would still like to see maybe a trial format of the US format run it for 8 weeks and see how it went. then they could get people who are up for playing the game.

Hey, I like nice people as seen in my favs. And I am not saying we need all gameplayers in there. Just put a Doctor Will type in with the regular UK styles housemates, get rid of the noms rule and watch the master or masters at work.
If the ratings go up then they know they are on to something.

If there was no public vote I'm sure BBUK people would play the game far more. But that's not the British concept. Same by name different by nature.

Hmmm agreed. People like Nick, Victor, Seizer and Rex who tried to play that were loathed for the most part.
But I think you can be a tactical player and not do personal attacks like the later. Dr Will and Danielle never bullied or intimated anyone, that's the difference. In many ways our "game players" were far more like Evel Dick.

Superficially it is taking some things from the American version. But the best thing they took, Save and Replace/Veto, was actually dropped this year. And they don't have a voice over guy narrating in an over the top and biased way, they don't overuse the music. They have been copying possibly the weakest aspects of the American version recently, the narration from the DR (which tells us what we know already), using flashbacks to manipulate the audience, and the recaps for people who are just casual viewers. They also add flashforwards before the advert breaks (started last year I think) which I'm not sure they even use in the American version and use up unnecessary time. So the British version this year I think has become worse. Also the American version has a live stream, though it is heavily censored for the HLs as it was way back in BB7UK for instance.

the Save and Replace when it was on our BB was put in to late, if it was added from the start it would of been good.
I would just love to see the US format in the UK BB house, They could still keep the public vote but then that could hinder the chances for the real gameplayers who are playing strategically.

It wouldn't work, they've tried things like HoH before in BB9. Gameplayers are not liked in the UK version. The social element of BB is emphasised strongly over here where as in the US version it's much more about gameplay.

Actually the names are not showing up in the dr BBUSA they show the name only in DRs
and
I don't remember who said it but about if there was a dr.will type in bbuk rating would go up. They have in the first season remember how Nick mezmerized everyone I think in a bb special where they were talking to one of the executives of Endemol the exec said that if Nasty Nick was on BBUSA he would win
I would like to see as a twist have 2 or 3 bbuk all stars in the american version as a twist but it would be hard to do cause of American immigration papers and stuff like that
Where's Patrick to diss the american version?

And wow, i made a thread about BBUSA in the BBUSA section....how CRAZY...(and actually it's just as much about BBUK, so, ummm...????)

Nobody. I just get tired everytime your name comes up on a thread. I get it if you like the new show but putting everyone else down who has anything at all negative to say about it is grating. As is the childish tone you use doing it.
Hence the joke.

The networks do have huge influence over the show though. The network purchases the show and chooses the producers and get's to make most of the big decisions about the program.
If CBS isn't happy, you better believe endemol will listen, because otherwise CBS cancels the show. Endemol is more interested in making the network happy than the viewers.

It is very obvious it's more to do with the channel than the production company. Channel 4 has a style that was reflected in Big Brother, just like it is in their documentary programs and other reality shows. For instance could you imagine a drumroll with dramatic music when the winner of Come Dine with me is revealed?
Channel 5 has always had american programs on and its very americanised. Hence the change to the more "glossy" look.
