View Full Version : The World Still Thinks Americans Are "Coolest": Poll, British #6

letmein
06-09-2011, 07:26 PM
LONDON (Reuters) - They may be witnessing their global superpower influence decline in the face of challenges from other emerging players on the world stage, but Americans have been voted the world's "coolest nationality" in an international poll.

Social networking site Badoo.com asked 30,000 people across 15 countries to name the coolest nationality and also found that the Spanish were considered the coolest Europeans, Brazilians the coolest Latin Americans and Belgians the globe's least cool nationality.

"We hear a lot in the media about anti-Americanism," says Lloyd Price, Badoo's Director of Marketing. "But we sometimes forget how many people across the world consider Americans seriously cool."

Of course, not all Americans are cool far from it. Some like Snoop Dogg, Lady Gaga, Samuel L. Jackson, Johnny Depp and Quentin Tarantino are way cooler than others.

Americans, however, are the dudes who invented cool and who still embody it in many fields from music to movies and TV to technology.

"America," says Price, "boasts the world's coolest leader, Obama; the coolest rappers, Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg; and the coolest man in technology, Steve Jobs of Apple, the man who even made geeks cool."

Brazilians are ranked the second coolest nationality in the Badoo poll and the coolest Latin Americans, ahead of Mexicans and Argentinians. The Spanish, in third place, are the coolest Europeans.

The French are voted cooler than the British, and Canadians cooler than the Belgians. This may come as a relief for Canadians, who are sometimes viewed as chronically uncool.

Or, as Michael Ignatieff, the Canadian politician, once put it: "Paris, Texas stands as a metaphor for broken dreams; Paris, Saskatchewan just sounds ridiculous."

The top ten coolest nationalities:

1. Americans
2. Brazilians
3. Spanish
4. Italians
5. French
6. British
7. Dutch
8. Mexicans
9. Argentinians
10. Russians

Five least coolest:

1. Belgians
2. Poles
3. Turks
4. Canadians
5. Germans

Poor Canadians and Germans... the people I've met from both have been really nice.

I'd put French, Brazilians and Italians higher than us too though. Americans really are a broad spectrum to judge collectively. Like sure, the Strokes are cool, but is Larry the Cable Guy?

The fact that Canadians are in the least coolest poll shows how flawed that list is

...I don't think they meant "cool" as in temperature, but if they were, you're right, Canadians should be at the top. :joker:

I think the "coolness" they were referring to was about the culture of each country, or the stereotypes of each countries culture. The stereotype of the average French person, is cooler than the stereotype of the average German. It's really just about stereotypes.
Also i'm sure the survey was carried out in English, so obviously English speakers are mostly exposed to a lot of American media, because it is the largest English speaking country.

To be honest, i doubt it would get enuf attention on American BB thread. They prolly just ignore it an keep talking about BB. American's arn't obsesed with these type of multinational polls as everyone else is.

Most American's would just say "why are we cool???" lol

Well i've lived in America my whole life, and i can count the number of people that claim to be Irish on 2 hands)
There are not that many Irish p[eople in America. You are talking about St. Patrickszday lol. everyone is Irish on st.patricks day, just like we are all Mexican on Cinco de Mayo. :joker:

When I was in the states loads of people claimed to be Irish to me :hmph: then again I was in Boston!

American's are very friendly. Now i wonder how many of those people claiming to be Irish would you want to speak on behalf of the Irish? Would you say they were Irish?

How many of them could speak the Irish language that you met? just out of curiosity?

They were about as Irish as the Jersey Shore kids are Italian. lol right?

They claim to be Italian on Jersey shore. But clearly are very much American in all their brash, loud, aggressive glory.

It's just a clan thing, wanting to be part of a certain group. And America is very much about groups. Everybody and everything seems to be categorised and labelled.
