View Full Version : What makes Great Britain great?

Benjamin

Sensible answers please. I've been struggling with this country for a while now, don't get me wrong, I am glad I was brought up here, but I personally have lost any love for this country that I once had.

Other than the countryside and some great views I seem to have lost faith in everything else this country has to offer and find myself getting very irritated with the majority of the British population.

So what makes the UK great for you?

- We are Amazing at most sports really good all rounders considering the population compared to other countries Cricket, Football, Rugby, Darts, Snooker, Athletics, Rowing, Sailing, Equestrian events, Motorsports, Boxing and Golf from the top of my head i can think of at least 1 person or national team that are world class in each of those areas

And that's all that really matters

What is it you've been struggling with? It must be tough living in such a culturally enriched, relatively well off country having to read the odd story about someone you never met perhaps not getting as much time in jail as they should have.

Britain is great. And I aint even British.

Excellent question for a discussion.

One I find increasingly hard to answer.

As much as I've always been loyal to my country - Scotland first, but part of the UK as a whole, I do feel we are becoming an embarrassment.

I am sickened by your post.............. How could you have forgotten about a special mention for Runrig, Ewan McGregor, Billy Connolly, the best malts in the world, the outstanding scenery, the beautiful castles and Celtic Connections....

Actually, all kidding aside; all of the above plus your own reasons are the things I am proud of to be fair.

Joking aside, I am thankful for where I live. We don't have drought, famine or war. We aren't bothered by earhquakes, tsunamis, tornados or monsoons, nor do we have huge poisonous snakes or spiders.

We do have our problems, but all in all Britain is a safe, pleasant place to stay. Shame the weathers **** but hey ho, we can't have everything. :)

All things considered, we've got it good here. There might be problems with our country but they're nowhere near as damaging as things like famine, cruel dictatorship, out of control disease problems... We take it for granted, I think, so I guess the things that make this country great are the things we take for granted.

Becks puts his life on the line when he plays football you haven't been watching the MLS league he gets fouled every 5 minutes because he is so good he just gets back up again straight away though as you would expect a Immortal God to do and i will also have you know Becks was in very dangerous lands there one of Bin Laden's henchmen could have shot him anytime but Becks would have saw it coming 10 minutes before it happened so it's okay.

There is a slight disparity between Becks getting his shorts a bit dirty and his boots scuffed for the money he gets per week, against your average squaddie actually getting slotted or worse still for most losing limbs etc for the pittance they get.

As for old Bin Laden's henchmen taking a pop, yeah right, those are drill rounds on the 0.5 and also on the gimpy on the table. They were in a nice safe compund, in the middle of a very large British base, within an even larger Combined International Forces base.

Lots of people around him with real guns and real bullets to stop anything happening to him. Tis the way of the Regi

Don't get me wrong, I did say I was glad to have been brought up here and our History is great. But what about now at this present time? I'm finding it very hard to see why we are so great in this day and age. Yeah, given we are better off than most 3rd world countries, but I do feel we are becoming our own undoing and that this country is on it's way down very fast. For example if war were to hit us I believe this country would struggle as we barely have any of our own resources any more, we rely to heavily upon importing.

Great Britain has everything really. It does have a lot of fantasic places. People say to me.. a sunny day in Cornwall is a better beach holiday than Spain!! I have been to Cornwall and it's nice down there. Love the beaches!

We have London. Which is like a mini New York. Ok New York is in a league of it's own but if you want plenty of shopping, shows to see and sightseeing architectual buildings then there is your place!!

However go to York. Better than overated London ;)

There is plenty of countryside. Pubs. Rivers. Boats. Etc. National parks, mountains!!

I think most people say they don't like Great Britain anymore because it is getting too densley populated. There is quite a few rough areas. I mean.. I am lucky to live where I live. However 10 minutes down the road it's a rough area. lol

So yeah when I can afford to I will get a house/flat in a decent area.

I don't think many people care about Great Britain anymore. This is why it's turning more into a ****hole. We are becoming quite weak as a nation with lack of boundaries so any riff raff is let into our community when they havn't paid the price of their mistakes. Or people taking handouts and there you go!

I don't mind it in Great Britain at the moment. I can see where Ben is coming from. I think the UK is gradually getting worse but there is still plenty of great qualities to it!

Not sure if I will be here 10, 20, 30 years time. I might have to emigrate to Australia/New Zealand or something which I wouldn't mind.

You get rude people everywhere. I think people are better all round in other countries. Is the UK the worst place for the type of people we have? I am not sure.

Home is where the heart is. I will always have a soft spot for where I have been brought up and will probably always want to come back to the place.

I think what Great Britain is missing out on is culture. For England we don't have a strong English culture anymore apart from your local Fish and Chips. Or the Royal Family. Which I don't mind but I wish it could expand it's horizons.

The trouble as i see it with Britain is not what we have got, because imo that is second to none, but we seem to be losing it, or selling it or downsizing it, privatizing it.

It's been happening for years.

Premiere League is.nt really British because so many of the clubs are foreign owned

NHS can't be afforded so it's changing and not for the better judging the current plans.

So much of the things we are giving away won't be gained back which is why i say

Im Proud of Britain today, but the Britain of Tomorrow is any ones guess.

No offence, but I have to half agree with that. A lot of youngsters seem to be so fixated on reality TV, becoming famous (without any actual real talent), the newest gadgets, yet give them a simple every day task and they struggle and have no actual grasp of actually doing stuff or thinking about how to solve it. Obviously not all as some of the youngsters are very smart.

To be fair me and my boyfriend already have a good deposit between us. There was a house in a nice-ish area that he liked. But it had a downstairs bathroom and a part of me was like.. "it's too soon for me to commit" yet..

However someone at my work said to me.. "now is the time to buy". Maybe she is right. House prices are cranking up!!

It's because I was taught about money from a young age. I wouldn't say I am tight. I just don't like spending money on pointless things.

My mum and dad rent their house so when they die not like I will get the house because it's not owned by us. But me and my partner do have enough money for a deposit to go into a mortgage house!

Obviously not all as some of the youngsters are very smart.

True. But thick people are harmless. Don't get why they are hated. If a thick person has a job and is paying taxes through life and not sponging off the goverment then what more could you ask for?

Too much stereotyping really.

It is most def a buyers market just now. I feel heart sorry for those who are needing to sell - and simply cannot shift unless they bring down the price to unbelievable levels. It's so sad.

I agree most people that aren't to bright are harmless and should not be chritisized, but what about the 16 yr old who is asked Why did you steal that" and he replies "I don't know" then says "It's for something to do" then says "Were in charge not the Police were just trying to show them who's boss"

I heard that virbal diarrea coming from a lads mouth during the riots. The reason for that crap is the reason i feel less proud of Britain because if you went to Afrika, India, probably anywhere other than America you would not be able to find such rubbish coming out of one single kids mouth.

That Drivell is Made In Britain it's ours we own it, we created it, and we ignore it and i'm not Proud of that.

True. I am not that smart but I am in employment. To be honest I don't know how smart I am and I don't care for the stereotypes of who is smarter.

However usually you get people who arn't as bright but is a grafter. Then those who are academically clever.

The others are just "lazy". I agree that EVERYONE thick or smart needs to contribute to society more.

There are no jobs because one of the reasons is that foreigners are getting them. But because they harder workers and will do the jobs English people won't do. However 2 foreigners have just been fired from my workplace because they have been caught doing bonus fraud. Faking signatures from managers so they get extra pay but they have been caught out..

So there you go. There is no stereotype really. There can be **** English people and **** foreigners. But also decent English and foreign people. Problem with the UK is that at the moment.. ok we might be well off at the moment. Well better than other countries but we are WEAK.

Sounds like as much as a lot don't want it to that maybe Britain needs to become more "PC" again. Limit the amount of crap that we see in television, magazines etc. But for most folk all that is just a laugh. It's just there.

We need more community spirit and youth clubs. Something for unemployed or any of these young rioters to do something.

Margaret Thatcher is to blame for what has happened. Everything wasn't as bad until she came along.

I'm not really a great patriot but it annoys me when people are like "this country's gone down the toilet" or "it's not what it used to be". Bulls**t. This country is a great place to live and I can honestly say there's nowhere else I'd prefer to be. No sudden disintegration happened in the UK, things have changed but that's just life; times change and so does society. If you look at other European nations you've got major countries like Greece, Spain, Portugal all in a far worse situation economically than we ever got near to

I find it hard to find any other country on the map and say that they do things better than we do here, there are so many great things about this country and it seems that they are all too often taken for granted

It's hard to articulate into words why it's such a good country but off the top of my head-Wembley Stadium, Harry Potter, The Beatles, tea, TopShop, the accents, the telly, the fact there is always something going on. I'm more patriotic for a country I'm not even from than my own.

I'd probably argue we've got the greatest set of literature if we're looking at it nationally as well. Music certainly. TV... joint top at least. Pretty decent films.

The only things I'd say we're lacking in are architecture, food (and you can get sentimental about roast dinners all you like; we haven't got jack **** on the Italians or the French), art, philosophy and...well...weather.

I don't really see the appeal for Great Britain either. I mean sure we don't have famine and natural disasters but I think the general attitude of GB sucks. Most of the time people here are nasty. Society in general is a lot more shallow here. I never really noticed it until I went back to America during the Easter holidays.

I think the culture here is brilliant, the countryside and everything too. I just think that the people here in general make it not so great

Australia off the top of my head are rising. They actually had an economic growth during the recession.

Australia is only rising because China is rising, an Australia is selling a lot of minerals to china. Australia is just destroying it's own enviornment for chinese devolpment. Australia is not rising in terms of innovation or technology or any kind of real sustainable growth. They are just selling a lot of metal an minerals that they dig out of the ground to the Chinese just like the Africans and the South Americans. Just like the Middle east sells oil.

China an India are certainly rising though, an it's genuine growth.

I dunno what makes Britain great lately, i think most western countries are pretty similar culturally these days... I think the world is getting more an more similar and smaller, an there are much less differences between nations now. We watch the same movies, listen to the same music, watch the same TV shows, use the same technologies an websites an computers an ipods, wear the same fashions. I think it's hard to find anything UNIQUELY "british" these days.

Not pedantic but merely showing the extremes in your comment/view can be taken.

I know of no French people who eat the frogs or snails that they may have hopping about or slithering in their gardens, in the same way that I know of many Brits who have ponds with various fish in them, that they don't eat either.

I'm quite sure that other nations find some of the British foodstuff as unpalatable as we do some of theirs.
