I was on my way back to work after my lunch break. I heard on the radio that a plane had crashed into one of the towers, then a few minutes later they called out that a second plane had crashed into the other tower, I thought it was some kind of joke, terrorism never even entered my head.

I had just got back home from school and my nan phoned and said something was happening in New York and to put the news on.

When I put it on the second plane hadn't hit and the newsreaders were on about a small plane hitting the tower.

I had just gone back to school from my summer holidays and I had just started a new year at school so I was doing my Science homework:bored:

I remember looking up from my workbook, just as the second plane slammed into the side of the second tower and I knew this was really bad.

And then to watch the towers collapse, live along with the rest of the world was horrific. I felt sick. I didn't sleep well that night. I was 12.

I was getting ready to go on holiday the following day... I went into town to get some things. The first place I went was my work (dixons) to buy batteries and the dreadful gossipy woman I worked with was trying to chat to me and was telling me something about new York and airplanes and terrorists but I was just so bored talking to her that I was just like "yeah, I know... whatever "

I went to superdrug, then as I was walking back down past ky work, there was a crowd outside watching the tellys and I joined in, just in time to see the first tower falling. I remember standing, not believing what I'd just seen and phoning my mum in confusion.

My flight to Greece the following day was surreal... I had a good holiday but found the whole 9/11 thing hard to get my head around when I came home.

I'm watching something on tv just now about the German Cell.......

hard to believe it's ten years on. I was off work, was faffing about the house, and when I went to the shops: everyone was standing listening to the radio........there was a real sense of "christ, where is going to be next" and we thougth London.

Came home, managed to call a few friends I'd met on holiday to ensure they were okay (they were NY coppers & their wives) - and sat for hours & hours in front of the tv with tears streaming down my face - mixture of shock, horror, sadness and complete disbelief that it was real life.

It could so easily have started.

I'm not even sure what I thought. It's one of those moments in life your mind just cannot work around. You ring people, you watch the news (check every channel just to see if one knows more than the next), you look outside expecting things to be different..... very surreal... sad..

Because I was on holiday during the aftermath, I missed the media coverage of the whole thing... I don't know if it would have helped to have sat and watched the 24 hour coverage after it happened, but I still feel a need to watch what happened that day as I can't really take it in (still)

I also wonder if anybody had the same strange feelings I had after it happened? I am really really laid back about everything, but after 9/11 I turned into a bit if a psycho... I couldn't bear to be apart from any of my family for any length of time... it got quite ridiculous: if my mum went to the supermarket and was quite a ling time, I used to get panicky and end up in tears... I basically couldn't bear for any of my loved ones being away from me.. it was horrible. :bawling:

Glenn.

It was a very strange feeling watching it knowing you can't do nothing but watch it unfold.
And almost as though it couldn't be happening. This blatant attack and disregard for life, it was like something out of a movie if you know what I mean?

You Vile person. Thousands of innocent people died that day. The Whole of Manhattan was put into meltdown. The North and South Towers were not a controlled explosion. September 11th has left thousands of people suffering over the loss of Family ect because some terrorist group decided to crash into them.

Have some respect for the people who died that day, the people who tried to save Humans stuck inside. 9/11 was not fake. If you think it was fake you seriously have problems.

I am sorry, and I dont mean to be insensitive, but FFS! I mean I was there at the time, I seen the impact and everyone panicking. BUt jeezz. Its like its the biggest tragedy that ever happened in the world, more than the worlds wars combined! NO one deserved it, but please. 4000 people died or whatever. that many people die like every year, in Afghanistan or a lot more.

In
And what annoys me most, is they treat it like a celebration! With fireworks and planes, and whatnot. HOw about just one minute of silence, some flowers on ground zero, and thats it!!

I wonder how I would feel, if I was one of the victims families, having to relieve the horror, over and over again, on TV all the time, with the planes crashing.

Whatever! may they rest in peace. I am done with september frikking eleven!

I think that's so stupid that schools do that, just send people home to watch the news.

Schools have a duty of care to ensure that the pupils for whom they are responsible are looked after.

Not everyone at school will have a parent or a childminder who can drop everything and be at home should the pupils be sent home.

I get that! I am just sick of it to be honest. I read somewhere, its like disaster porn! I was as affected as anyone, at the time, and some of my friends live in NYC. But it was not the worst thing in the world ever, like they make it seem. Too many tragedies have happened in the world, and people remember it with dignity! Its like back in WW2, an Peal Harbor. HOw dare they bring the war to the united states. Never mind that Europe is being dismantled to the core!

I just think its their tragedy, and I dont think they will be honoring the Tsunami victims every year, or the haiti earthquake victims, or the death in the Rwanda massacres. So really, in the grand scheme of things, 911 is waay too over publicized, all over the world!

Its refreshing to hear an American say this :spin: I always presumed Americans just mourned the day of 9/11 like it was the end of the world or something. Im hoping that after this 10 year anniversary, it will all quiet down abit.

Why would it be akward for muslims? The whole issue of islamophobia is a lie by the press. There have been more anti-semetic attacks in America on jews since 9/11 than islamophobic attacks. And FAR more attacks on gays than muslims. Obviously any discrimination is wrong, but there is no big backlash against Muslims in America.

I suspect most muslims are feeling the same way all MATURE American's are feeling, that it's a horrible world changing tragedy and all those lost deserve to be remembered.

As far as some Americans being sick of hearing about 9/11 because they'd rather hear the FOOTBALL gossip, well that tells you all you need to know about that sort of person. Very immature.

It was the first Friday of secondary school for me and I got off the school bus a stop early and walked down to my old primary school with a mate to pick up our Year 6 class photographs which had arrived late.

After having a chat with the teachers about how we were getting on after our first week of "high school" one teacher came running in "Another plane has flown into the other tower now! :O" but we thought it was just a freak accident.

Got home about 20 minutes later and my Mam shouted me to "come quickly", she had the TV on with the live footage from NYC and honestly I didn't take my eyes off it for about 3 hours!

It's crazy where time's gone!

like Jonnii and Tom it was in the first week of secondary school for me - and all I can remember is walking past classrooms full of people around TVs but I didn't even think to stop, I thought it must have been some sporting occasion or something. My mum picked me up and we heard it on the radio - so rushed home and watched the news.

Aside from receiving the news of deaths of family members, there has been nothing and will be nothing as immediately heart-wrenching as watching those towers fall.

Just 22seconds but that Plane with the Evil Saudi Terror Gang
going into the 2nd tower is a shocker.

And what was more shocking is Atta (from Egypt) the Leader of that mission
was in Florida a year before learning how to Fly a Plane
but not take off or land.
He paid his cash just to learn to fly steady.

The Man running the Florida Fly School told the FBI
but sadly as they sent a Lady FBI agent
it was not looked into far enough.

I'd just turned 14, was at school, a teacher came into the classroom and talked to my teacher and she turned on the TV and we sat there until school was over watching it. Tbh I didn't think much of it at the time, was just pleased I got to watch TV instead of work. An A-level Economics class was supposed to be going to NY in the October half term but it got cancelled due to my HM being paranoid about it happening again.

Has anybody else mentally invisaged what it would have been like to have been in that building when it was first hit? I'd like to think I would have been calm and very helpful.

-random comment I know but it's a thought I've had and I'm hoping it's not only me who was sick enough to think it :-/

Whenever I watch one of those 9/11 programmes that come on each anniversary I think about it. It's a horrible thought really but I think I'd have been a mess and probably have jumped, simply because I'd rather die like that than burned or crushed to death.

Yeah but it wasn't the same scale as 9/11, still deaths though.

I can't really see anything like this happening again, security on aeroplanes is way too high for terrorists to be able to hijack planes and after 9/11 people are much more aware of suspicious behaviour. Then again it only takes a small group of people to slip under the radar for these things to happen...

america is full of evil, ignorant people
why should i respect them?
i actually hate the stupid, ignorant mass american public more than i hate the evil american bastards who were responsible for 9/11
i will hate them until they evolve and become a peaceful people and not warmongering ********

Sorry - but Mods, Admins, Members... whatever I may of said about American Media back in my early days of this forum, has lead to bans and insults always going my way.

But surely nothing I've ever said can compare to that?

But all in all;

I'm not the most Anti-American member anymore.

I think the reason 9/11 is so significant is because it shattered the USA's sense of invulnerability and changed global relations for ever; 10 years ago it was basically the worlds lone super power, a place of infinite opportunity that was safe from foreign hostility - not the case anymore

Although 3,000 died in the Twin Tower attacks the actual subsequent death toll is in the hundreds of thousands after the disastrous wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan and also from the general "war on terror". Really I think the way America reacted played right into the hands of Al Qaeda and made then out to be a far larger and more dangerous organisation than they actually were.

Sometimes I've thought about the people that jumped, an I thought about having to make the choice between burning to death, or falling 110 stories to the ground. I'm terrified of heights, so I don't know if I could jump, but at the same time burning to death must surely be the most painful way to die.

I still don't know what I'd do.

I think the reason 9/11 has had such an impact is because we literally SAW people dying before our eyes,I know there have been other terrible events, but we actually saw these people obliterated and could do nothing to help we know lots of other people die in wars etc,but we dont see it first hand we are just told, this was different. We saw over 3,000 people die that day.

Weapons can be made of ceramics, wont be spotted on some airport detectors.

Not only knives but also guns.

Regardless of any security measures imposed at any airport with enough time, resources and planning aircraft can and will still be hijacked.

But the cockpits are sealed now, so they can hijack a plane, but they can't use it as a missile anymore. (unless the pilot IS the terrorist)

Not strictly true, cockpit doors are now reinforced and locked, but can still be opened during flights, for meals, crew relief etc.

Very True Shasown

It could happen again
if they take over the Cockpit 5 or 10mins before they want to hit a building.

I don't think so, and also i think the pilots now have the ability to turn on an intercom to the rest of the plane, and listen to make sure there's nothing out of the ordinary going on before they unlock the door for the food to be delivered.

Actually i was 19, and had just moved to California 3 weeks before, first time away from home on my own.

I don't get the impression that many people on this forum are hardcore religious, i'm certainly not.

We don't hear about them much? you must not have watched any of the dozens of documentaries they've been showing. there were dozens of phone calls recorded from them, and interviews with the family members who received those calls. also calls from the flight attendants to the airlines and control towers. There is ALOT of stuff about the people on the planes.

On Flight 93, the last hijacked plane, the passengers were able to find out about the attacks on the twin towers and the Pentagon through the telephones on board and they all banded together to try and overcome the hijackers. Sadly they were never able to regain control of the plane but through their determined effort they managed to prevent the hijackers from reaching their planned destination, the Capitol building in Washington.

There was 4 planes.

Two crashed into world trade center, one into pentagon and the other crashed in a field after the passengers tried to get control of the plane.

the more concerning thing I learned from a commercial pilot who worked with a Scheduled airline company ..... is that despite the changes the the cockpit doors/locks, timers etc, the one thing that was not looked at was the wall between the toilet up front - next to the cockpit.

Something i'd have thought was so obvious: but it took some time before it was established that that was a weak spot..... Shocking in reality that it wasn't considered at the same time as the cockpit door access.

Yes, I think it's less talked about than the twin towers attack. I agree, I think the people on board were so brave to attempt to overcome the hijackers, taking into account that passengers had already been stabbed and the pilot was lying dead, they are all heroes in my eyes. Even when things were looking extremely bad for them, they had knowledge of the previous three attacks so they had an idea of what was going on but they still didn't give up hope. Just remarkable people.

It was heading towards the Capitol building in Washington, where had it not been for the brave attemps of the passengers on board, a lot more people would have died.

Well I think it would have been a similar situation to that of the flight United 93, where it didn't reach it's intended target but crash landed somewhere, still killing all of the passengers on board.

They were true heroes. One of them was Mark Bingham, he was a gay rugby player from California, and his mom started the first ever gay rugby league World Cup in his honour.
So to any homophobe that thinks gay men are weak, Mark stood up to terrorists at 40 thousand feet in the air. SHowed once and for all that gay men are "real" men too!
