I don't like when people make that comparison. The pop fluff in the eighties was still far better and it's not as if virtually the entire top twenty was absoloutely littered with the **** attack garbage today's charts are. The decent tunes still broke the charts back then because everyone bought singles.
I find it so bizarre that people still follow the charts. And I don't mean looking at the countdown on TV out of curiosity. I mean really following the charts.
Anyway how dare he tarnish this hallowed ground of superior music etc.

Yeah I checked iTunes this morning to buy Lucky Day by Nicola Roberts (only down in the 70s?! oh dear...) and was pretty appalled to see him at #1, I'd have thought One Direction would be soaring at #1 still? I take no issue with him getting a #1, I'm genuinely stunned at the support he has, I didn't think N-Dubz were particularly successful? It's surely only through Tulisa's X Factor connection...?!

Bananarama, Kajagoogoo and Chas and Dave were not far better :nono: and it's a bit pointless saying "oh well this dirge is slightly better than new dirge", it's still dirge, which was my point :hmph:

They were - especially 2 years back around the time 'Number One', 'Wouldn't You' and 'Need You' came out.
But they are split up now, which in a way is a shame - because I'd much rather listen to them than Dappy, at least with them we got Tulisa.

Of course it's not pointless. Less dirge songs mixed in with lots of great songs > Incredibly dirge songs being near dominant on a constant basis.
One > the other.
I think the charts have only been crappy since 2010, before that was good :D

Exactly.
The charts are literally ran by little girls thinking with their young pussies.
I don't know why there is barely any Rock, Indie and Punk and aside from that - just normal music, on the charts now?
I say Rock, Indie and Punk because you hear new songs from those genres on YouTube - but never see them in the charts.
I mean today in town I seen a line up outside HMV - for guess who?
That ******ing pussy 'Starboy Nathan' from Big Brother: Celebrity Hijack.
I mean what goes through the minds of people who want to buy his music? And if I hear One Direction's new song again I'll shoot myself.
I'd give anything to go back to about 5 Years ago - there were boy bands around the charts then that actually weren't annoying and had good songs.
Snow Patrol springs to mind easily and that song by The Feeling that was quite big in '06.

The charts have been awful since 2010. I'd say 2009 but 2009 had Pixie Lott and quite a few other gems. Just look at the list of #1s for 2010 and all you can think is "Why the bloody hell?"
1138 Ne-Yo "Beautiful Monster"
I mean seriously how did that EVER get to #1. No one even remembers it.

LOL I'm on YouTube now listening to loads of Indie Songs I use to like [because of this thread] and on Vevo it just says like '(C) 2006' in every song - no wonder that year was so amazing for music.

I hated it to be honest in like May and June and then on Holiday it was played alot and It grew on me, I love it - it's really catchy.
I also liked On The Floor, for the same reason - use to hate it, was played in Summer, grew on me because of the sheer catchiness of the tune.
I only listen to 'On The Floor' if it's a Solo Version though without that wanker Pitbull.

The song isn't bad, it's well crafted. It's got a very american style.
I don't think music has gotten any worse than it was years ago; I think it's just your perception changes as you get older - I look back on the mid 2000s fondly as it was when I was growing up as a teenager; whereas I look at the last few years in a pretty negative way whereas the trend I've noticed is that the younger members who've posted in this thread seem to like the music from the year that they were early teens... idk, maybe that's just coincidental. There is still good music out there being released, it's just a little less obvious where you have to look in order to find it.

I agree, 80's chart pop music actually had some soul to it, nowadays every song is either Tiny Tampon wittering on about LYF In Da Hud, JLS wanking over underage fans or some slag like Ke$ha singing about going out and having sex with everyone in the club. It all just feels heartless and ruthlessly manufactured in every single aspect.

I think you're probably right there, really it's not like there's been a huge sudden decline in the quality of music being produced in the space of just a couple of years, I think it's more to do with people's perspectives just changing
Number ones this time since 95...
95 - Shaggy 'Boombastic'
96 - Fugees 'Ready or Not'
97 - Spice Girls 'Spice Up Your Life'
98 - Mel B Feat Missy Elliot 'I Want You Back'
99 - Eiffel65 'Blue (Da Ba Dee)'
00 - Modjo 'Lady'
01 - Kylie Minogue 'Cant Get You Out Of My Head'
02 - Pink 'Just Like A Pill'
03 - Black Eyed Peas 'Where Is The Love'

09 - Taio Cruz 'Break Your Heart'
10 - Alexandra Burke 'Start Without You' (Ive never even heard this song)
11 - One Direction 'What Makes You Beautiful'
You can clearly see the last 3/4 years, number ones have been declining rapidly - all the ones from 95-08 are actually worthy of getting number 1
Yeah sure they are.
Anyway re : what Zee is saying I think great music is more plentiful and easily available today than at any other point in history obviously due to the power of the internet as a platform it's just - a cliche I know - the mainstream stuff that is gack.
I don't think music is as exciting though. The thing is until very recently music was always going somewhere new. Each new decade brought new technologies and styles of music. Right now we're at a complete saturation point. Everythings been done and becoming harder to invent new ways of making music. All you can do is make it faster and in increasingly absurd subgenres.
You're not going to get the birth of rocknroll again. You're not going to get the dawn of synthesizers and explosion of electronic music again. That's all been done. We're now here in 2011 and we have everything. We have all the available genres and all the available technology. Music just lulls about now being either dreck, decent or somewhere in between.

But yeah Chewy, VERY well said.
I've been listening to the OST of Vice City for about 2 hours now, you know the radio station CDs?
So it's funny you mentioned about 80's music having alot more meaning to it, because it did - the lyrics behind every song made sense, and every single song aswell made use of real instruments - not silly autotuning and sound effects like music now.
It makes me jelaous when I read comments on YouTube about how great it was to live in the '80s when that music was popular and everyone appreciated real music.

Exactly.
I think a lot of the best music, or at least my favourite songs, are social commentaries. I don't necessarily mean politics, I mean that the lyrics comment on something meaningful and cause you to think about what the songwriter might mean by their choice of words. That's why songs like Someone Like You capture the public imagination and are a roaring success - because people can relate to songs that they have to think about - hearing Red One being name checked and listening to songs about being ~in da club~ over a thumping bassline with a dubstep breakdown do nothing to make people think. I think that's the problem with the music scene at the moment, what's popular is not making people think. For that reason, I therefore think that we'll soon see a new fad pop up that people get behind (like the Indie wave from a few years ago) to counter the current trend of mindless noise. If you look back; music styles flare up in popularity fairly regularly, so I expect that it won't be long before we're complaining about something else and pining for the days when the charts were filled with David Guetta...

This post pretty much sums up my point about how it's not that the quality of music has gotten any better or worse; people are just nostalgic about certain periods of music because of the age they were when they were released. Eiffel 65 - Blue (Da Be Dee), more deserving of a #1 than the likes of Taio Cruz/Alexandra Burke/One Direction? Really? I like the song, don't get me wrong, but it's essentially a heap of ****. Most of the songs on that list are crap, just our perception of them depends on when we grew up.

If Blue (Da Ba Dee) was released this year, it'd be dismissed as more dance ****. But loads of people grew up when it was big and the chart wasnt completely filled up with dance **** (well it mightve been around the late 90s/early 00s actually but still) and that makes it seem better than it is. I agree with your points about liking music from when we're younger, Zee. The main reason probably being nostalgia

I imagine in 5 years I'll hear Sexy Bitch - David Guetta somewhere and think "aw yeah this was a tune" but it still doesn't make it any less crap, I'll just be able to tolerate it more. It's the same with anything that is over-exposed; when it finally disappears out of the public conscience it's actually not that bad when you remember it in the future. I could have picked on most of the songs on that list and made the same point. What was so special about the Pussycat Dolls, for example? I could go on...
That list is just a list of number ones. Again the difference between now and then is that great music still cracked the top twenty routinely back then because everyone bought singles. The charts were better in years gone by. Let's broaden our scope a little from 'yeah but Eifel 65 was a number one back then!'.
