Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has unveiled the company’s much anticipated overhaul of profile pages, transforming the user profile into a virtual scrapbook that digs all the way into your past.
At the company’s f8 developer conference in San Francisco, Zuckerberg laid out Facebook’s vision for the future of profiles. He described the history of the Facebook profile, starting with the original profile from 2006, when Facebook was still known as TheFacebook. He explained that through all of these iterations, Facebook profiles have been a good gauge of what you’re doing now, but they are not a good way to share what you or your friends have done in the past.
“We’re more than what we did recently,” Zuckerberg explained to the audience.
It was then that Zuckerberg unveiled Timeline, the revamped version of the Facebook Profile. It’s a way to show off who you are, what you do and where you’ve been. It’s a complete design overhaul that makes a visual history of everything you’ve ever done, all the way to when you were born.

Facebook automatically adds photos, status updates and life events from your Facebook history to your timeline, but you can also add photos and content from you past to fill out the “Way Back” section. In his demo, Zuckerberg showed how to add a baby picture to the beginning of your timeline.
“It’s fun and easy to fill out your timeline,” Zuckerberg said.
The new profiles also include a map feature that lets you see where you’ve been, thanks to Facebook Places. It maps out your travel. You can even mark your place of birth. But perhaps the most striking feature is the cover photo, which displays a giant image at the top of the new profile page.
Timeline’s purpose is to resurface all the content you have created on Facebook. The problem is simple: once a status updates leaves your profile, you are unlikely to ever see it again. Zuckerberg and the Facebook team want to make Facebook a place to express who you are while discovering who your friends are at the same time.

They are trying so hard to be different when really they are fine the way there are

There was nothing wrong with how it was... this is exactly what Bebo tried to do when it realised it was losing users to Facebook; it did nothing to bring people back, so I'm not sure why Facebook thought this would be a good idea?!?! Seriously unhappy with all of these changes, sorely tempted to deactivate my account and just make sure all my close friends have my email address and just socialise through that, what's the bloody point anymore? Ugh!

I have to admit (comming from a recent user) that I don't really like the new FB. I have recently fallen in love with Twitter this week so expect me to be on that more (Follow me on Twitter @Recylopse) . No I am not joining Google + it won't let me anyway since I am under 18 and I have a gmail account.

I just find it so funny how they are so desperate to keep hold of their users that they've shot themselves in the foot the second Google+ launched.
It backfired completely.

I swear Mark Zuckerburg likes to rearrange everything on Facebook just to watch the torrent of statuses expressing confusion and anger at him for doing so.

**** sake even he has sold his soul to the devil
I don't want to get another social networking site though, I don't see the point in Google+. It was just yet another pointless change and I think this one might be enough to force me off of it for a while. Stupid!
Patrick

The problem is, there IS nothing else.
I joined a Chinese Social Site in 2008 - their aim was to rival the 'big' thing back then, Bebo - and they PAID their users for signing up as long as you entered your Debit Card Number and stuff, and they sent more money to your bank account if more new members say you 'referred' them.
I made about 30 Quid of it, my Mum took most of the money - the bastard.
But yeah it obviously flopped. :idc:
MySpace is full of silly Americans trying to get their big break. :bored:
Bebo is now a desert.
Twitter is full of celebrities and silly bitches with no lives.
Facebook is just shooting itself in the foot constantly.
Google+ failed without ever winning.
So I mean, there is nothing else.. yet

Nope, MySpace's new owners chucked him out, despite him starting it all, glad he's got in with Facebook, since MySpace pretty much inspired Facebook

The only reason google plus failed is that there are not enough people on there. If everyone on fb was on + then it would be just as good if not better.
Scarlett.

I have never understood why people are so behind Google's products, like Chrome and G+ - Google is notorious for keeping information on everything you google, do you really want those same people getting information from you on a social network? Facebook might have information on you, but at least it's only crap like you liking S Club 7 or whatever
Google+ is just for indie people who hate the mainstream.
i've got rid of my Facebook again, newest changes are a step too far. the ticker in the top right hand corner is just bordering on stalking

Get ready for a This Is Your Life-style recap available online, as Facebook's Timeline feature is now out of beta and available to all users worldwide. Originally announced during the f8 conference back in September, it wraps up all the information you've posted, friendships you've made and embarrassing photos you were tagged in, in a neat, date organized package. If you're worried it may uncover some things better left private -- and posted years ago before you were more savvy about social media -- you can enable the feature and still wait a week before it goes public for viewing by others. Currently timelines are visible on the main site, via the recently updated Android client and the mobile version of the site. If you want to turn it on right way, head to the Introducing Timeline page and click Get It Now.

I managed to get this back in September by pretending that I was a developer, surprised it's taken them so long to begin rolling it out to everyone. It's miles better anyway and the fuss is going to piss me off, just how it always does when something new is rolled out. Every. Single. Time. And then people get used to it and nobody's bothered anymore. Change needs to happen to keep things fresh and whilst previous updates haven't been all that great, I really like this.
