The home secretary has approved the extradition of a man accused of arranging the murder of his wife on their honeymoon in South Africa.

Shrien Dewani denies any involvement in the death of his wife Anni, 28, in Cape Town. South African authorities want him extradited to stand trial.

A judge ruled the 31-year-old Bristol businessman could be extradited but Theresa May had to approve the move.

Mr Dewani has 14 days to lodge an appeal against the decision.

A Home Office spokesperson said: "On Monday 26 September the home secretary, having carefully considered all relevant matters, signed an order for Shrien Prakash Dewani's extradition to South Africa.

"Mr Dewani now has the opportunity, within 14 days, to appeal to the High Court against the decision of the district judge and/or the home secretary."

Zola Tongo, a taxi driver who has confessed to the murder of Anni Dewani, 28, claims that Mr Dewani was haggling over payment for the killing in the back of his taxi while returning from a safari trip.

Xolile Mngeni and Mziwamadoda Qwabe are accused of being the gunmen who shot Swedish-born Mrs Dewani in the back of a taxi in Guguletu township, near Cape Town on November 13 last year. Tongo’s solicitor, William Da Grass, tells Dispatches his client claims he and Mr Dewani exchanged text messages discussing payment for the killing while in the same car as the victim.

Mr Da Grass said his client claims that: 'She was looking at a digital camera at the time. They had been at a game park and she was looking at photos regarding their travels on their honeymoon whilst these negotiations were being carried on in her presence.'

Reports show Mrs Dewani was not sexually assaulted or raped. She was shot through the hand and neck, possibly as she lay face down in the taxi.

A man accused of plotting the murder of his wife on their honeymoon in South Africa is to challenge an order that he can be extradited.

Shrien Dewani, 31, denies any involvement in the killing of his wife Anni, 28, who was shot after their taxi was hijacked in Cape Town.

In August, a judge ruled that he could be sent to South Africa to stand trial.

Home Secretary Theresa May signed an order approving the extradition in September.

Two other men, Mziwamadoda Qwabe, 25, and Xolile Mngeni, 23, are also charged with murder, as well as kidnapping and robbery with aggravating circumstances and are due to go on trial at the Western Cape High Court next year.

Mr Dewani is said to be suffering from severe post-traumatic stress disorder and is receiving treatment at a Bristol clinic.

The hearing will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday at the High Court in London.

BBC Panorama has obtained CCTV of the hours before Anni Dewani was murdered in South Africa. The footage from the Cape Town hotel CCTV has never been seen publicly before.

Jeremy Vine explains that it shows Shrien and Anni Dewani kissing and posing for pictures, hours before she died.

The footage doesn't prove anything either way, but it's very sad to watch ..... :sad:

The film investigates the case against her husband Shrien, currently fighting in UK courts to avoid extradition to South Africa to stand trial for her murder. Did the wealthy businessman engage a taxi driver to arrange his wife's death, or is he wrongly accused? The CCTV images reveal a different side to the couple than has so far been portrayed.

Still more unsatisfactory "evidence" with Jeremy Vine obscuring the issue by focussing on the dubious township characters.

Even the CCTV elements he selected showed Dewani leaving his wife for long periods of time, while the footage of the couple "kissing" did nothing to offset footage of them walking well apart, with no physical contact whatsoever.

IMO, Dewani's "secret" homosexuality has made him into a consummate actor and a devious murderer.

The extradition of a man accused of arranging the murder of his wife while on honeymoon has been temporarily halted on mental health grounds.

Shrien Dewani, a care home owner from Bristol, appealed at the High Court against an extradition order which was granted by a judge in August.

He denies arranging the killing of his wife Anni, who was shot dead in Cape Town, South Africa, in November 2010.

The extradition was previously backed by the Home Secretary Teresa May.

Two High Court judges ruled that it would be "unjust and oppressive" to order Mr Dewani's extradition.

But the court said it was in the interests of justice that he should be extradited "as soon as he is fit" to be tried.

Sir John Thomas, president of the Queen's Bench Division and Mr Justice Ouseley, ordered that the case be remitted back to Westminster Magistrates Court for a further hearing.

The judges said key factors taken into account included his unfitness to plead, increased prospects of a speedier recovery if he remains in the UK and "the lack of clear certainty" as to what would happen if he was returned to South Africa in his present condition.

The risk of suicide was also considered "to a much lesser degree".

Mr Dewani, 32, has been diagnosed with severe post-traumatic stress disorder and severe depression and his lawyers argue that his health and life will be at risk if he is extradited.

In a statement, Mr Dewani's family welcomed the ruling.

It said: "Shrien can only return to South Africa when he is well enough and when his personal safety can be guaranteed."

A South African man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for murdering Swedish woman Anni Dewani during her 2010 honeymoon in Cape Town.

Mziwamadoda Qwabe was charged with murder along with Mrs Dewani's British husband Shrien Dewani and another South African, Xolile Mngeni.

Mr Dewani denies plotting to kill his wife. A British court has halted his extradition, citing his mental health.

Mr Mngeni has a malignant brain tumour that has stopped him going on trial.

Defence lawyer Daniel Theunissen told the high court in Cape Town that Qwabe had agreed to plead guilty to kidnapping, robbery, murder, and illegal possession of a firearm.

Prosecutor Eric Ntbazalila welcomed Qwabe's admission.

"It's a positive step for the prosecution because we are now a step closer to getting information on what happened on that day, which will shed some light on the role played by Shrien Dewani," he is quoted by the AFP news agency as saying.

Shortly after the murder in November 2010, South African taxi driver Zola Tongo confessed to killing Mrs Dewani.

Tongo said Mr Dewani offered him about $2,100 (£1,340) to arrange the killing and make it look like a carjacking.

He was sentenced to 18 years in prison following a plea bargain.

A judge at a South African high court ruled Xolile Mngeni, who has a brain tumour, is fit to stand trial.

Mr Mngeni was named as an accomplice by Mziwamadoda Qwabe who last week pleaded guilty to her murder.

Shrien Dewani, 32, from Bristol, is accused of arranging his wife's murder. He and Mr Mngeni deny any wrongdoing.

Qwabe was jailed last Wednesday for 25 years.

This whole sad story makes no real sense at all, if he was gay why would he marry her considering that she is from a powerful well known family. If he wanted to hide his homosexuality but had to marry then perhaps pick a lower profile older wife from a less well known family.

But then to think he could quietly have her murdered...on their Honeymoon was stupid in the extreme. Her murder would always be front page news all over the world and as such it would be investigated dilgently so the conspiracy was almost certain to come to light. No it would have made more sense to have lived together for a short period of time and then arrange some qiet mishap that seemed more plausible.

But why murder her in the first place she has done nothing to him it doesn't make any sense.

A businessman wanted in South Africa over the honeymoon murder of his wife has been admitted to hospital after his health "seriously deteriorated".

Shrien Dewani's wife Anni was shot when a taxi the couple were travelling in was hijacked in November 2010.

He was being treated in a secure mental health hospital for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder so he can be extradited to face the charges.

But his family said he had been moved after suffering chest pains.

They said he had been transferred to a different hospital after tests suggested he had reacted poorly to medication prescribed as part of his mental health treatment.

District Judge Howard Riddle has set 1 July 2013 as the date on which proceedings should continue.

Mr Dewani faces charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and obstructing the administration of justice - all of which he denies.

My last post on this (above) was questioning his sense in carrying out this murder the way it happened, but events since then have made me think he is the main suspect hence his almost superhuman efforts to avoid extradition to South Africa.. he has a lot to hide and a lot to answer for...!!!!

A man wanted in South Africa over the honeymoon murder of his wife has suffered a mental health relapse, a court has heard.

Shrien Dewani, 33, is being treated at a hospital in Bristol for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Westminster Magistrates' Court heard he was taken off medication after experiencing a bad reaction.

"We may have taken one step back having taken two steps forward," said his lawyer, Clare Montgomery QC.

Mr Dewani's wife Anni, 28, was shot when a taxi the couple were travelling in was hijacked in a township on the outskirts of Cape Town in November 2010.

The Bristol businessman faces charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and obstructing the administration of justice - all of which he denies.

Mr Dewani has been sectioned for a further 12 months under the Mental Health Act.

The court also heard the defence made proposals in April for Mr Dewani to make a voluntary return to South Africa, but the details of the offer were not discussed in court.

Under the South African government's current plans, if Mr Dewani is extradited his mental health will be assessed upon arrival.

If he is considered at risk, he will be taken to the psychiatric unit at Valkenburg Hospital in Cape Town, before being sent to the city's Goodwood prison.

A request from the defence to put back the full extradition hearing for an expert to visit Valkenburg in August was rejected by the chief magistrate Howard Riddle.

"I am very, very reluctant to delay this case any further," he said.

The full extradition hearing is expected to start on 1 July.

This is just more delaying tactics from someone who clearly has a lot to hide . There is only so long he can hide behind illness , sooner or later he will have to face the consequences of his evil deeds.

I just hope the real truth comes out and her family can grieve for their beautiful daughter/sister who was so cruelly taken from them by this evil heartless beast..!!!
