The Simpsons is reportedly facing cancellation.

The long-running animated series could be axed due to a contract dispute between the show's voice actors and 20th Century Fox, The Daily Beast reports.

The studio purportedly wants the actors to agree to a 45% pay cut or it will cease production on the Fox series. Meanwhile, the actors have offered to take a 30% cut as long as they receive a small portion of the show's back-end earnings.

Earlier today, 20th Century Fox released a statement regarding the contract negotiations, insisting that it is committed to finding a solution to the dispute.

"23 seasons in, The Simpsons is as creatively vibrant as ever and beloved by millions around the world," reads the statement. "We believe this brilliant series can and should continue, but we cannot produce future seasons under its current financial model.

"We are hopeful that we can reach an agreement with the voice cast that allows The Simpsons to go on entertaining audiences with original episodes for many years to come."

Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston recently signed on to voice a spy on the animated series, while Glee's Jane Lynch will play Homer's new personal assistant in an upcoming episode.

The Simpsons first premiered in December 1989. It is the longest-running American sitcom, the longest-running American animated programme and the longest-running American primetime scripted television series ever.

hmm.. :suspect:

No one gives a ****** anymore.

The Simpsons is a washed up, has been - bore fest.

It's all about South Park and that rubbish Family Guy now, The Simpsons should just bring itself to a 'graceful' end and go away now.

It stopped being amazing after the movie.

Okay well that's bollocks, considering the fact it's won loads of awards and everyone was going crazy in like April when the 'Final' episode aired and sent everyone into shock and worry that it was gone.

So yes, South Park is still as good and relevant as ever.

Actually, maybe it has gone down hill abit - yes, but it's still far more talked about now than The Simpsons and those wanna-be's, Family Guy.

Didn't everyone get bored of that in about 1998? :joker: I remember when it used to be on Channel 4 on a Friday night at 9.30pm, it used to be on after Friends. Now its on VIVA or some other crap channel at daft times

Can't believe its still going tbh, its pretty one dimensional. Simpsons used to be really good and its a good family comedy as well with plenty of jokes for adults and kids alike but it got boring a few years back.

when shows like this are cancelled, do they just cancel it right away or they say "okay Simpsons will no longer air on television from Autumn 2012"

Whether the stars take a salary cut or not, there won't be many more new adventures in the town of Springfield.

Fox executives told The Wrap on Wednesday that even if the voice actors behind the iconic animated show "The Simpsons" take a massive pay cut, the show is no longer profitable as a first-run series and will end after next season. If the actors don't agree to a cut, this season, the show's 23rd, will be its final batch of new episodes.

The Daily Beast reported Monday that the actors were facing a 45% cut from their $440,000 per episode salary, which would take them down from $8 million to just over $4 million; they countered with an offer of a 30% cut but with a small slice of the show's backend, which includes merchandise, syndication and DVD sales. The executive told The Wrap that any agreement would only be for one more season.

Producers for the show have already taken a pay cut to keep the show going. Fox released a statement about the show's tenuous financial situation on Monday.

Cool, never watched it much as a kid. I watched the odd one but never got into it. I do prefer Family Guy, because it's so horrifically bad and an obvious rip off. It's just so over the top and pathetic and I love it. Never cared much for South Park either.

I prefer American Dad to all of them.

No, the new episodes haven't been brilliant, but it'd be a shame to see it go. I like The Simpsons.

Guess a deal has been sorted:

The Simpsons has been renewed for two more seasons.

Fox has announced that the Matt Groening animation has been ordered for a 24th and 25th season.

The renewal follows reports that the show's future was in jeopardy due to a contract dispute between the show's voice actors and the network.

Fox had previously said in a statement: "We believe this brilliant series can and should continue, but we cannot produce future seasons under its current financial model.

"We are hopeful that we can reach an agreement with the voice cast that allows The Simpsons to go on entertaining audiences with original episodes for many years to come."

It was later claimed that several Simpsons producers had indicated a willingness to take a pay cut in order to keep the show on the air.

Fox did not reveal the terms of the new deal with the actors and producers.

The Simpsons first premiered in December 1989. It is the longest-running American sitcom, the longest-running American animated programme and the longest-running American primetime scripted television series in history.

New episodes resume on Fox at 8/7c on October 30 with 'Treehouse of Horror XXII'.

The treehouse of horror episode this year I thought was good. There actually were 4 stories. Marge asked Homer to donate a bag of candy to the troops overseas and told Homer not to eat it himself. Loved when Homer said "It's to remind them how much fun we're having back home." lol

Probably the funniest skit was one where Homer got bitten by a black widow and became paralyzed and he figured out a way to communicate to the outside world by farting. The first thing he does is get Lisa to write a love letter to Marge. His love letter goes something like "Marge, my butt can't express how much I love you" and when Marge reads his love letter she is overcome with emotion and Homer begins to fart and Marge, still loving Homer, puts her hand over his butt and says "don't say a word". lol, I almost fell off my seat laughing so hard. so funny.
