Disney has announced plans to re-release four of its classic animated films in 3D.

Following the success of The Lion King's re-release in the medium, Disney will put out new versions of Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc. over the next couple of years.

Beauty and the Beast will be released to cinemas in the US on January 13. It was originally planned to be released in 3D in February 2010.

Disney/Pixar's Finding Nemo will be released on September 14, followed by Monsters, Inc. on January 18, 2013. The prequel Monsters University will be issued by Pixar on June 21, 2013.

Finally, The Little Mermaid will get a 3D re-working on September 13, 2013.

Walt Disney Studios President Alan Bergman said in a statement: "Great stories and great characters are timeless, and at Disney we're fortunate to have a treasure trove of both.

"We're thrilled to give audiences of all ages the chance to experience these beloved tales in an exciting new way with 3D - and in the case of younger generations, for the first time on the big screen."

The Lion King 3D has so far made more than $80 million (£51.7m) at the US box office.

It's good that a new generation are getting to see them but I wish they weren't being converted to 3D, costs more to see and the 3D is never worth it, just a silly gimic.

I hate bloody 3D at the pictures. Waste of money. Oh my Beauty and the Beast DVD came today. I bought it with the buy 1 get 1 free Disney offer along with The Rescuers!!

I can't wait for The Lion King to come out on DVD again. I will be getting that. Is it out next month or something?

They could just stop putting films in the vault if they wanted a new generation of fans

They want to make even more money by bringing it out first at the pictures though!

Not everyone buys DVDs though and rereleasing it in cinemas is a way of getting a bigger new audience to see the film. Plus when they do release it on DVD after it's been in cinemas again, they gain a bigger profit. I don't think Disney will ever spot putting films in the vault.

I'm not surprised, the Lion King re-release did the business in America so it was only a matter of time.
