They are very slow and unresponsive. If you have to phone them, you are in line of 10-15 calls. I waited an hour and its a natinal rate phone call.

I've narrowed down the uni's I want to go to down to these:
Exeter
Reading
Southampton
Cardiff
Bristol
Portsmouth
Although that isn't final and Im still considering:
York
Durham
Bath
Leicester
Coventry
Plymouth
I think I need to make my final 6 by September when we start filling in the UCAS applications.
And no it isnt too late Chocolate, im applying for September 2007 not this year :spin:

I suppose you can narrow your choices down by looking at what you are hoping to study, and, researching who has the best school offering that out of the ones you are interested in. For example who has the best school of health or the best school of science etc....
I agree with CC100 UCAS are terrible to deal with - takes them forever and sometimes depending on the UNI you can ring their admissions office to see if you have a place, some of them are quite good

Thanks for the advice
Basically, Exeter is definately the Uni I want to go to as it isn't to far from Plymouth and my school has special links, hopefully meaning that if I dont meet a grade for example they may wave me through (I hope )
Reading, Cardiff and Southampton I think are definately going to go on my application too as they are all not too far away, offer good courses and require fair grades.
The only 2 on the top list above which I may replace are Bristol and Portsmouth with either Durham, York or Leicester.
I doubt if Bath, Kent, Coventry and Plymouth will appear on my form as the others are far better I think.
There are loads of open days in June / July so Im going to be all over the UK in the net few weeks, hopefully that will help me make my final decisions

What I know about this is.....
When you write the personal statement try and find a way to be original, and try to avoid cliches.
You've got to make it look like your a good candidate for the course so you don't really get any credit for mentioning negative points or being modest.
Thanks James for the advice
Being original is definately important, however I didnt know that you shouldn't be modest, I would've been like that if I hadn't have known.
Just an update on all the uni stuff thats going on... ive booked loads of university open days for the next couple of weeks meaning I miss a total of 7 days of school throughout the next 3 weeks, only down side is is that getting from Plymouth to places like Leicester and Norwich by 10am is very difficult - we have to leave at 3:30am to get to Norwich by 10am! And Im navigating!! :conf:
Heres a list of everywhere Im going:
Exeter - Tuesday
Reading - 24th June
Bath - 27th June
Portsmouth - 28th June
Bristol - 29th June
Southampton - 4th July
Leicester - 5th July
University of East Anglia, Norwich - 7th July
Kent - 8th July
By the end of all that I will have serious sleep deprivation I think, and miss a load of BB shows

Totally go to Bristol!! I'm there!! lol. It looks fab on your C.V!! Depends what you want to do there but for law it's one of the best in Europe - better than any of the other universities that you have listed!!!!! :-D Also depends upon what job you want to do after as law is really competitive so a degree from Bristol means more than a degree from some of the other universities.
It's important to take three factors into account:
1) how close you want to be from home
2) whether it is a place you can see yourself living and studying
3) how is it rated compared to the others - a good rep means you'll have more opportunities for employment after
I've been told by barristers that with law, the top employers (the best law chambers) actually don't bother even reading C.V's if there is a rubbish uni on it.....sounds horrible but it's because the uni's grade their own students so your degree level is decided by the uni you go to and their criteria. :conf:
I was considering doing law but as I didnt do it for A Level, I decided to choose History instead - my tutor told me to be careful in Bristol he said there was a lot of crime in the area around the university - is this true?
Just an update here as I need some advice...
Basically, I've decided I want to got to Reading University and I need BBB to get there and do History. However, when applying my school will send them my forecast A Level grades and the individual unis will decide whether or not to make an offer based on grades, personal statement etc...
The dilema is that I have been forecasted ABC which is technically the same as BBB, and I'm panicking that Reading won't except ABC and will say they are looking for BBB only, and no equivalents.
Does anyone know if they will except ABC instead of BBB as both grade combinations total 300 tariff points. :conf:

Okay I'm about to send it to my referee tonight, but I still don't know whether to include sporting qualifications in the qualifications section because thats where all my GCSEs and AS level grades are.
I have skiing, windsurfing and swimming awards and I don't know whether to enter them in or just mention them in my personal statement. What did you do Rebecca?

Lucky, our sections are: courses, education, employment, about you, and statement - which is very vague considering the layout that your friends have.

My reference was done by my head of sixth-form who recieved mini reference sheets from all my teachers then he compiled it all into one reference. He's okay, so my reference shouldn't be too bad.
What did you put for employment? I left it completely blank as I've never done a day's work in my life!
But I don't think the unis will dislike that too much cos you don't really need work experience to do a degree in History, luckily!

 Haha, I need my PS checked one more time then I am sending it away to UCAS. :hello: I'm just part of a local 6th form aswell, so it shouldn't take too long to be checked by a referee and for my reference be made.
My first attempt at a personal statement - I thought it was really good  I was proud of it, and my teacher made me cross out most of it and start again, now it just sounds boring and cliche  Haha.

Reading - 300 points (BBB/ABC/AAD)
Southampton - ABB

You are obviously more sensible than me.
The reason why I didn't put a uni / course down that asked for lower grades was because I though that if I did that I may only work towards that level and relax and do maybe even worse!
If I set my targets high and don't let myself relax then I I should keep on the ball and do well. Only a strategy that works for some though.

I think it's the firm deadline date
You can still apply after 15th January but your application may not be given equal consideration to those who applied before this deadline.
There's also something called UCAS Extra which I think is designed for people who get no offers first time round.
Finally there's clearing for people who miss the grades for their firm and insurance institutions.

Indeed, finally over with, hopefully!
Well, I've applied to four Uni's but for basically all the same degree... with some variations according to the different Uni's.
I want to do Music & Media Management and have applied for London Met, Uni of East London, LIPA (Liverpool) & Uni of Gloucester. All the ones I could find my course at.
Fingers crossed...
I have all my A-level equivalents done in Ireland and I have great grades so hopefully they'll think my personal statement and reference are OK too. Well, one of them at least.:pat:
Have you applied this year, sol?
Yeah I have applied for September / October 2007 entry.
I've applied for BA History at Reading, Leicester, Lancaster, Exeter, Southampton and Cardiff.
I think that Lancaster or Exeter will be my firm choice and Reading or Leicester my insurance choice.
I need between 300 and 340 points to get into them which is AAB-BBB.

Ive been told by the uni that Im interested in that they dont mind at all if I apply after 15th January- in fact they get most of their applications in Feb/March.
Ive been 'offered' a place to study Quantity Surveying at the UCE in Birmingham. All I have to do is send in a satisfactory UCAS form.
Any tips on who I could choose to be my reference? Its been 7/8 years since I was in education doing A-Levels.

I've got two unconditional offers and have an interview for LIPA (Liverpool) on March 26th. I'm still waiting on one offer too. :)
Congrats cc100 and Lance
I'm in the middle of going to the departmental open days that they invite you to after they've given you an offer. I've already visited Leicester and Reading and they were both really impressive and on Wednesday during half-term I'm going to Southampton. After that I've got Cardiff and then Lancaster.
I don't know what the hell Exeter are playing at cos they still haven't even replied to my application which is well annoying.
If I had to decide now I'd either pick Lancaster or Leicester as my firm and either Leicester or Reading as my insurance, but that's still changeable.

Other than that, I don't really mind where I end up - I'm willing to live anywhere.

I wouldn't worry about how long they're taking to get back to you, Lauren. I was waiting for ages for LIPA. And I've still got an interview to go to. So I probably won't know until mid/end of April.
Good luck with Lancaster. Keep us posted.

I'm so excited! I got my acceptance letter through this morning and it had the accommodation booklet with it!
Lancaster University is a collegiate system like in Harry Potter, where you have different "colleges" and thats where you live and stuff.
All of them have their own bars and coffee bars and most of them have games rooms and commons rooms as well as en-suite accomodation! :hello: How exciting. Aaand, all of the colleges are named after districtions like Bowland and Cartmel.
Okay, I'll stop now!

As complete seed packages, coconuts have been known to travel to faraway lands to find new homesteads. Stories abound of coconuts floating their way across seas and oceans to be washed ashore on distant islands, rooting themselves in handsome groves to greet visiting humans in search of paradise. The dehusked coconuts you buy at the supermarket, however, are no longer productive seed packages. Once the husk is removed, the seed dies.

" Though its name suggests that it is a nut, I've always regarded coconut as a fruit. When the coconut is young, it has properties like fruit, and as it matures, it becomes more nutty. But in fact it is not a nut or a fruit; it is a seed.
Unless it is picked, a matured coconut eventually drops from the tree."
So if it's picked - it's a fruit.
If it drops - It's a seed.

Cheers, Mark.
I don't know what to wear actually. It's like group work and presentations and stuff. I don't think there's a formal interview or anything.
Casual or dressy? Any ideas anyone?

Is LIPA a performing arts college? My brother said something to me about LIPA but i just thought it was the name of the university.

Smart-casual, veering towards casual.
When I went to my open days I was just casual, as was everyone else - but since this is kind of like an informal interview you might wanna be slightly smarter (but not a suit or anything )
Congrats!

Aye. There's no like sit down face-to-face interview. There's like two workshops - critical writing & finance.
And then group interviews - 5 minute individual presentation and questions & group interview (whatever the second one means xD)
Hmm. I don't wanna go and be like... casual if everyone else is smart?:conf::blush:
Congrats on your offer and good luck for the informal interview Lance.
I chose my firm and insurance choices last week. My firm is Southampton and my insurance is Reading. I really hope I get into Southampton cos it's a great place and uni and it isn't too far from home either, but I'll still be pleased with Reading though.

I made my choices last week too, put Lancaster as my firm.
If I get in, I've also decided 1st + 2nd preferences of colleges.
Fylde College is my first choice, and Furness College being my second choice.

I really, really don't know what to wear Monday.
I rang them, they said smart casual.
But like... jeans/trousers? Hmm, I'm lost.
I don't want to go and be like more dressy than everyone else. Or be too casual either. Especially seen as everything is done in groups.
If it was individual, I wouldn't mind. But like, not only do you have the people from LIPA to impress, you've gotta look good infront of everyone else too.
Help... please.

Oooh, jeans, tee and smart jacket?
Thats what I'd class as smart-casual

Jeans - but not ones with the butt hanging out - you could do a shirt with jeans or a t-shirt and smart jacket.
Remember they are more interested in what you as an academic will bring to the institution as opposed to what you have on. I was on assessment panel at Northumbria last year for the social work degree and to be totally honest I couldnt tell you what have the people had on, but I could list the things that stood out about people if that makes sense.
Take it seriously in terms of your presentation etc.. but let them see that you are comfortable with who you are in what you wear. Go in and knock em dead matey ( you could always wear the elf suit)

Cheers for the advice, Sunny. I guess as long as it's decent looking then it doesn't matter. That's actually quite put me at ease that has. Cheers m'dear.

Gotta apply to accommodation in a week or two, gotta decide which college within Lancaster Uni I wanna stay in.
Here is all the colleges (http://www.lancs.ac.uk/depts/cro/guidetocolleges.htm)
The site hasn't been updated much, but now all colleges have en-suite accommodation (yey!!) so I'm not sure which to go for.

LOL... it's an application you make when you're not bothered which college you want to go to. I thought it applied to all collegiate universities (with there being only a few).

Oooh, LOL. They might have it - I don't have the application papers yet.
But nah, I wanna make choices of which College to stay in. Apparently County and Bowland are a bit busy and loud - so I don't wanna stay there.
The ones I'm interested in mainly are Fylde and Furness.
Just wanna get other peoples opinions

It might be a few weeks yet, it's normally about a month or a bit less than when you firmed/insuranced them.

Yeah it's probs cos they already know that they've successfully recruited me so they stop panicking and start concentrating on the 2008 applicants lol.

Cheers Sunny and Lauren!
I had such a good day today. I enjoyed like every minute of it.
If I'm being honest though, I don't think I'll get in. I think they said there was originally 600 applicants and only about 140 were called for interviews. So even to get that far is an achievement, I suppose.
There were people with much more experience and potential there today, though, IMO. I'll know by next Friday, but I'm really not getting my hopes up.

Dont sell yourself too short Lance - when at interview they are not looking for the ones who know it all already they are looking for the ones with the most to bring to their establishment and those with an obvious desire to do the course!
They have to love you anyway or I will be after them
