JJ Abrams's Star Trek sequel has been handed a pre-Memorial Weekend release date of May 17, 2013.

Paramount has pushed back the release of Roland Emmerich's blockbuster Singularity to November 1 in order to accommodate the highly-anticipated Star Trek follow-up.

The untitled movie will also be filmed and released in 3D, reports Deadline.

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin and Simon Pegg are all expected to reprise their roles in the sequel.

Benicio Del Toro has allegedly been offered the villain role in Abrams's second Star Trek instalment.

Filming has begun on JJ Abrams's Star Trek sequel.

Paramount Pictures has announced that principal photography has begun in Los Angeles on the untitled follow-up to the 2009 movie.

The film sees Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, John Cho and Bruce Greenwood reprise their roles following Abrams's acclaimed reboot of the long-running science fiction property.

They will be joined by new cast members including Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve, Noel Clarke, Peter Weller and Nazneen Contractor.

Eve has said she is excited to be reunited with her Starter For 10 co-star Cumberbatch, who is reportedly playing the unnamed villain in the film.

The film is due for release on May 17, 2013.

Edit: Benedict Cumberbatch?! Never expected him in Star Trek haha

TrekMovie has an update on our earlier story regarding the title for the Star Trek sequel We can now confirm the title that has been chosen by JJ Abrams and Paramount for the 2013 movie.

Sequel title: "Star Trek Into Darkness"

TrekMovie has confirmed with multiple sources that "Star Trek Into Darkness" has been selected as the title for the 2013 sequel to JJ Abrams’ Star Trek movie. This is a title that comes out of a long process of discussion amongst the creative team. As reported earlier, Paramount tested a number of titles for the film over the summer, including at least one title that did not include "Star Trek." Also noted in our earlier article, the title (by design) does not include a colon, like were used for the Next Generation films such as "Star Trek: First Contact" or "Star Trek: Nemesis."

While Paramount will not officially confirm the news, multiple sources have told TrekMovie this is the title they are going with as of now. It has also been reported by ComingSoon that Paramount has secured the domain names to both www.startrekintodarkness.com and www.startrekintodarknessmovie.com, neither of which has any content.

As for the title itself, "Into Darkness" does not reveal anything specific about the plot. So for those who were hoping for "Star Trek Khan" or "The Revenge of Gary Mitchell" you are out of luck. However, "Into Darkness" certainly gives us a hint that this film could have a serious tone and perhaps darker theme than the 2009 Star Trek film. On the other hand the title is also evocative of Star Trek’s core mission of going into the “darkness” of space, to seek out new life and new civilizations. Of course the current Trek team often point to Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy as inspiration, with the second film in that series being titled "The Dark Knight" which itself had some very dark themes. Is this Trek sequel Star Trek’s "Dark Knight"? As that film grossed $1B world wide, I imagine Paramount is certainly hoping it is.

According to sources, the creative team are still working on how they will officially roll out this new title. The first acknowledgement will likely be made with some kind of visual treatment, either a type treatment for the title or possibly even a teaser poster or image. Indications are that this official roll out should be coming soon.

Trek Movie

I like the name, at first it sounds weird, but then you realise that "Star Trek" is actually part of the title and not just the main title (like Star Trek: First Contact/Star Trek Insurrection were)

Glenn.

Bit of a random title :suspect:

Scarlett.

I assume it has some plot relevance, since the title is about a literal star trek into darkness lol

It's a lot more actiony the old Trek, but it revolutionises the series. Also it's a semi-reboot, it's bascially about an alternate timeline, with only Old Spock connecting the two.

Benedict Cumberbatch's Star Trek Into Darkness villain has been named in a new official picture.

The latest peek at the upcoming movie features Chris Pine's Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto's Spock and Cumberbatch as a character called John Harrison.

The official Paramount caption for the image reads: "(Left to right) Zachary Quinto is Spock, Benedict Cumberbatch is John Harrison and Chris Pine is Kirk in Star Trek Into Darkness from Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions."

There is no major character in the Star Trek canon called John Harrison, leading many fans to speculate that the moniker may be a red herring or a smokescreen to hide his real identity.

A full-length trailer for the film is expected to be released on December 17, following the announcement teaser that recently surfaced.

Star Trek Into Darkness, which is due for release on May 17, 2013, is directed by JJ Abrams and written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof.

John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban and Anton Yelchin reprise their roles from the 2009 movie in the sequel. Alice Eve and Peter Weller have joined alongside Cumberbatch.

Cumberbatch has said of his role: "He is very ruthless… He is not a clearly good or evil character. He is a villain but the action he takes has intent and reason."

If you look at the picture above, it could actually be Spock and Harrison (Since there is a glass window, and Harrison is wearing black)

That being said, Alice Eve's character has been named as Carol Marcus, who appeared in The Wrath of Khan (also she was a scientist working on the Genesis project, and the mother of Kirk's child)

It should be noted though, that the Wrath of Khan takes place much later in the original timeline (Kirk is getting on in the film), this film takes place around the first series of The Original Series.

I get why some original Star Trek fans might not be fans of the new ones. But I'm a fan of both new and old Trek (though, the Original Series wasnt to my liking, the films were better). I think the new Trek is great because it actually manages to reach out to a much bigger audience while still being Star Trek.

I liked a lot about DS9, but Sisko is not one of them. I think he was by far the weakest thing about DS9. If we are talking strickly about Captains, Janeway eats Sisko for breakfast. The fact that he even came to think of himself as a spiritual leader by the end of the series, to me that just goes against everything Star Trek is meant to be about.

I hated DS9 for trying to make religion seem like it had some basis in reality. Voyager was all about exploring the Universe scientifically, that's real Star Trek. DS9 was some weird religion/morality story and science was left in the dust. DS9 was not in the true spirit of Trek imo. Voyager was absolutely in the true spirit of exploration.

I liked the changelings story line and the dominion war. But the Bajoran Gods and all the stuff with the Gods in the wormhole ruined it.

I really just wanted Q to show up and be like "you call those Gods??" lol that would have been great.

I liked Deep Space Nine because it was trying to do something different. Plus it reminds me a bit of the greatest science fiction show of all time, Babylon 5. Plus Garak is the best character in the Star Trek Franchise

My least favorite Star Trek was Next Generation. It represents everything I dislike about science fiction. Militarism and all that. Plus every single on NG was unlikeable.

Data wasn't unlikable!! who doesn't like Data??

everyone loves Data, come on now.

And you said you liked DS9 so you must have at least some soft spot for Worf...

I really disliked Dax though. I can't even tell you how much i disliked that charachter.

When people go on about how much they hate Wesley Crusher, or Neelix, or Quark, i'm like really?? Dax was sooo much worse. The concept of the character was really cool, but the way they executed it, Dax just sucked.

oh you're heartless. Data was amazing because it was fascinating seeing someone trying to learn about and appreciate human beings. The same reason 7of9 was great. It was interesting and fun seeing them really wanting to understand humanity, even though it seemed so strange and crazy to them. I liked those characters cause they made us laugh at ourselves and our own idiosyncratic nature as humans.

how could you not love that? They had the sensibilities and intelligence of an adult, but the emotional intelligence of children. That's what made them great characters.

WHAT?!

Picard, Riker, Data, Geordie, Worf.....UNLIKEABLE?! WHAT?!

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m0al2eMgii1qfp8qwo1_400.gif

And I'd say DS9 was much more based around militarism, with the Dominion war and everything, the only time TNG ever went near the war topic was when they had those few Cardassian/Bajoran storylines in the last few seasons (which were only there because of DS9)

TOS was boring to me because the crew never really seemed all that close in the series, there was no development. The TOS movies were generally a lot better though.

Picard out.

Picard - I have always and will always consider Picard the most overrated thing about Star Trek. He made me cringe at least once an episode. He had nothing on the much superior Kirk.

Riker- Okay, fair enough, I actually did kinda like him

Data- Interesting concept, fair enough. But he was super annoying. And just a copy of Spock who already did the whole 'human' thing.

Geordie- Love LeVar Burton. Geordie did nothing for me though. Alright character, but nothing special.

Worf- Didn't really hate him, but never found him interesting.

I could just never get to like TNG. Maybe unlikeable was the wrong word. I just found everyone so boring. In the OS, you had Spock who was always the logical, and McCoy who was always emotional and Kirk who was somewhat inbetween. Shatner just brought so more charisma to Kirk, that you couldnt help but love him. I just liked those characters so much more.

Also you have Deep Space Nine where someone like Garak is a complex character who is only looking out for his self. All the characters had to changed over seasons. It was characters over plot.

I had a better reply to this, but I accidentally went off the page so this will have to do.
