Blonde waitresses take their trays
They spin around and they cross the floor
They've got the moves (oh whey oh)
You drop your drink then they bring you more
All the school kids so sick of books
They like the punk and the metal band
When the buzzer rings (oh whey oh)
They're walking like an Egyptian
All the kids in the marketplace say
Ay oh whey oh, ay oh whey oh
Walk like an Egyptian

The earliest I remember anything on a learning scale was when I was about 6 or 7, there was a programme about Tutankhamum on tv, watched it with my Dad and was in awe........ interest from there I guess and I read about it in the old fashioned thing called library!

Ah... see I was only here (UK) for about a year during classical studies and I swayed towards the Greek side mostly because a month long summer vacation was geared around the very places I was studying (which was immense when you're a youngster, visiting the places you were reading about).

We did ancient egyptians and the like in Primary School but in Secondary School History was mostly devoted to the Romans, The Monarchy and the times they lived in as well as WW2.
I dropped it when I was given my options though, I didn't care for learning about WW2 as I was only interested in the more ancient and mythological side of things really.

I think it's either or as you've said: kids either love the whole British history side - or the more ancient mythological side to other cultures - I just thought the whole ancient (non UK) history was fascinating as a whole - the people, cultures, lifestyle, architecture * how things evolved etc.
I also love that even to this day - thousands and thousands of years on & despite all the technology and advancement - that they still cannot agree on how the Pyramids were built, why they were aligned as they were, and the mystery surrounding the Sphinx - it's all still fascinating.

You're so right. I took my sons to mainland Greece about 8 years ago and it was amazing. We visited Olympia, Corinth, Athens, Delphi, Mycenae, Epidaurus and so many other places associated with Greek mythology - an absolute incredible holiday, and such beautiful, mountainous scenery. We were based in a little seaside village called Tolon very near a town called Argos! What's more it was such a cheap holiday, even though Greece had, at that time only recently joined the Euro and prices had just started to rise. However, we only went for a fortnight, and you really need a good month or longer to do it justice, and visit some of the remoter areas such as Monemvasia on the pelopponese peninsula.
Greece  I've never done any Ancient Greek mythology but I've studied some of their Philosophy, even though we'd pretty much all disagree with it now some it's very impressive

Like you, I did a lot of travelling in my youth, visited some amazing places when I was in the merchant navy, have been to Israel, Alaska, San Francisco, Caribbean, on the cruise ships, and also worked as a resort rep and coach courier all over Europe. I always had itchy feet and am really glad I did so much before I settled down. Travelled a lot in the Middle East when I married as my ex husband was working in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain etc. Also loved Egypt, the holiday of a lifetime. Next year I am planning to go to China, and I really can't wait:spin:

Looks like you and I appear to have trodden similar paths - but I'm envious of your Egyptian trip - despite living across the red sea (Jeddah) in Saudi - the one place we never got to was Egypt - we were meant to do it on the return journey back in but there were bombings and much unrest at Luxor and Giza so dad chose the safer option.
My best friend travelled to China year before last and they had a blast - 2 ladies in their mid 40's - almost backpacking style and they loved it - absolutely raved about it. If you do go, if you want me to get any hints etc from her, just say the word.

Yeah, I know, the dog who just died was really nervous, especially of strange men. I reckon someone really hurt her before she was rescued. Gav had her for 12 years but she never lost that fear of people.

Not at all - there are very different reasons and very different type dogs in both places. Not everyone wants a pure bred, some are more than happy with a Heinz57 mutt....same way as many cat owners are happy with a mere moggie. It's just personal choice for very different personal reasons.

I'd two cats in that situ - sisters, got them from the Animal Shelter when they were about 8weeks old. White died when she was 19, her sister Black lasted 2 more years. Black seemed very lost for a long time, it was heartbreaking....but when she realised that she got all the attention and all the love........she seemed happy enough with that.
