Wales football manager Gary Speed died.

His death was confirmed in a statement by the Football Association of Wales.

The statement said: "We extend our sympathies and condolences to the family. We ask that everyone respects the family's privacy at this very sad time."

Speed took over the Wales job in February, and earlier this month, said the side's rapid improvement had exceeded all expectations.

This is terrible. :( I was just reading about depression in football and the goalkeeper Robert Enke's suicide the other day.

Tragic, absolutely tragic.

So sad that he felt that was the only option. It's his family and friends I feel for now.

They were having a minutes silence in the Villa Swansea game but it spontaneously turned into applause with people chanting his name which was a good gesture, it's crazy that only yesterday he was on Football Focus laughing and joking around :(

Seen him in Boots a few years ago he always seemed really happy as well and the other day he was talking about the 2014 World cup Qualifiers about a week ago.. very weird

****** I hope that's not true

Edit - according to them it isn't anyway

The Sun newspaper denied online accusations.
A message on the paper’s official Twitter account read: “No truth in this story. The Sun was not investigating Gary Speed in any way.”

It's crazy, there are absolutely no signs of anything in his Football Focus appearance :/

Yeah I know, and you'd think he must have known he was going to do it then as well :/ I can't comprehend how he must have been feeling

It's this kind of thing, the 'rumoured' reporting that may (may?) appear in forthcoming days that would be completely out of order.

The man took his own life. I'd say he has suffered enough whatever the reason to do that, and certainly, his family will be suffering enough without his private life being dragged through the papers and them having to contend with that on top of such tragedy.

I think they mean it as a possible reason why he took his own life

why? very strange

heard rumours about him being gay or either him or wife having affair, those don't seem likely reasons to go to the extreme of suicide though

however it could be something else sexual that was discovered about him, something so terrible that if reached the public domain he would be completely destroyed?

that is the only thing that would make sense really

don't wanna offend anyone by being too specific but you can read between the lines and see what i mean right?

It still a matter that I don't think should be plastered over the papers for the same reasons I mentioned earlier.

and conversely: it could be completely non sexually orientated at all. it could have been something that most of us would consider 'not enough to take your own life' but at the time, it WAS enough to push the guy to the limit. Old saying about walk a mile in a person's shoes and all that......

walk a mile in his shoes?

so i get to be a successful footballer, manager of wales national team, married to hot wife, 2 kids, wealthy, large house in country, lots of mates.....

sounds good to me :D

people jump to the conclusion "oh he must have been depressed" why?

I actually find your use of your big grin smiley given the subject matter, very distasteful to say the least - along with what you consider to have been a great life - it wasn't so great that he wanted to stay alive.

Most people who are in a sound, contented, happy state of mind, don't take their own lives.

I'm not jumping to any conclusions as to him being depressed.

RIP Gary Speed, so young to go:(. He seemed such a nice guy, very professional and loved footie so much and of course loved his family more than anything else.

I cannot imagine what he felt and just hope more awareness about depression is available now after this..

Don't think the inquest ever established anything for certain, they couldn't be sure if he'd actually intended to actually kill himself or not, and there wasn't anything major/obvious leading up to it that would have caused it, makes the whole thing even more crazy
