View Full Version : Jeremy Clarkson's One Show rant: complaints top 31,000
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-15977813
The BBC has apologised after Jeremy Clarkson said he would like to see striking public sector workers "shot".
The Top Gear presenter was speaking on the BBC's The One Show on the day of widespread public sector strikes.
He said: "I'd have them all shot. I would take them outside and execute them in front of their families.
A BBC spokesman said: "The One Show apologised at the end of the show to viewers who may have been offended by Jeremy Clarkson's comments."
Jon Trickett, Labour's shadow minister for the Cabinet Office, said: "No one wants these strikes but most of today's strikers are mums, not militants.
"Clarkson should apologise. And the Prime Minister should make clear he disassociates himself from the distasteful remarks uttered by one of his friends."

He is entitled to have his 'private' opinion but he goes too far, I personally cannot stand the man and he is the main reason I never watch Top Gear because I have no wish to support hs career in any way.
The comment, joking or not was way out of order and also some daft people may take it into their heads to think, yeah they should be shot.
The only way to shut bigots like Clarkson up or diminish any effect as to what they say may have is to remove their public and media platforms.
He should in my view lose any appointments with the BBC forthwith. He is just a bigoted vile man with totally extreme views.
It's quite interesting to hear his views as I believe his mother was a schoolteacher...of course she didn't need the 'gilt edged' pension as I think she was the lady who made the first Paddington Bears to finance his boarding school fees....I dont think Jeremy has ever had to worry much about money or pensions.....I was more offended by his 'work for a living, like the rest of us....' remark

No fine for Top Gear after Jeremy Clarkson's lorry driver joke
Ofcom clears Top Gear of breaching its broadcasting code after Clarkson, while driving a lorry, said to the other presenters: "What matters to lorry drivers? Murdering prostitutes? Fuel economy?"
A few minutes later Clarkson added: "This is a hard job [driving a lorry] and I'm not just saying this to win favour with lorry drivers: change gear; change gear; change gear; check your mirrors; murder a prostitute … "
The regulator said the comments were justified by the context in which they were made and did not breach its programming code.

Yesterday was a day of industrial action across much of the UK public sector. Jeremy Clarkson commented on the strikers, as is his wont, during an appearance on the One Show
Trade union Unison has called on the BBC to sack Jeremy Clarkson following his "appalling" comments about killing striking public sector workers.
The union said it was taking legal advice over comments made by the Top Gear presenter on The One Show.
Referring to striking workers, Mr Clarkson said: "I'd have them all shot. I would take them outside and execute them in front of their families."
Unison said it was considering reporting the comments to the police.
The BBC apologised for the comments and also for remarks about railway deaths.
Dave Prentis, general secretary of Unison, said: "Clarkson's comments on The One Show were totally outrageous, and they cannot be tolerated.
"An apology is not enough - we are calling on the BBC to sack Jeremy Clarkson immediately.
"We are seeking urgent legal advice about what further action we can take against him and the BBC, and whether or not his comments should be referred to the police."
He added: "Jeremy Clarkson clearly needs a reminder of just who he is talking about when he calls for public sector workers to be shot in front of their families.
Prime Minister David Cameron, asked about Mr Clarkson's comments during an appearance on ITV's This Morning, said it was "a silly thing to say... I'm sure he didn't mean it".
Speaking before Mr Cameron's interview, Jon Trickett, Labour's shadow minister for the Cabinet Office, said earlier: "No-one wants these strikes but most of [the] strikers are mums, not militants.
"Clarkson should apologise. And the prime minister should make clear he disassociates himself from the distasteful remarks uttered by one of his friends."
Mr Clarkson's comments sparked hundreds of entries on Twitter.
Among them was author Tony Parsons, who wrote: "Jeremy Clarkson has misjudged the moment. Criticising striking public sector workers today is like sieg-heiling at Last Night of the Proms."

Problem is the people who run the One Show had previewed that question and answer and okayed it, he was merely voicing the irritation a lot of people felt at the strike action.
Now if they sacked JC they would also have to sack the producers of the One Show, for booking him, for asking that question when they knew what his answer was.
They would also have to hold to account the review team who failed in the delaying period before transmission to either remove or otherwise censor that comment.
Is it really Clarksons fault? Yes we know he has some very strange attitudes, but so did the people booking him and asking him that question. They had after all rehearsed the questions and answers prior to recording the show.
You ask a gob****e a question you will get a gob****es answer, as can be viewed elsewhere on this forum.

I disagree with his comments but he is deliberately trying to be controversial for attention as always and is an odious man anyway.
I agree with the strikers reasons for going on strike but I do find it laughable that the unions are threatening to sue him for daring to have an opinion, whether we disagree with it or not? It would be a joke if he was sacked too by the BBC but I can understand why people complained..
Friday's scheduled edition of QI has been replaced with another episode of the popular quiz featuring Sandi Toksvig, Lee Mack, Jimmy Carr and Alan Davies.
Not just "another episode", but a repeat .....
