It was good, but nowhere near as good as last weeks. It was twice as long as it needed to be, I don't really feel like a whole lot happened in the hour, and it was clear the point Charlie Brooker was trying to make 5 minutes into it. Wasn't half as interesting as the first episode.

http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2014-08-20/charlie-brookers-black-mirror-to-return-for-a-christmas-special-on-channel-4

Charlie Brooker’s Emmy-winning drama Black Mirror is returning with a feature-length Christmas special called Yuletide.

Three interwoven stories will come together in the new film which Channel 4 says is “the most mind-bending Black Mirror yet”. The drama has not yet been cast.

Brooker said: "I always enjoy a good ghost story at Christmas, and I'm a sucker for the Amicus’ compendium horror movies of the 70s. Our aim is to create the Black Mirror equivalent of that."

Phil Clarke, Channel 4’s head of comedy, added: “I’m delighted that we have a Black Mirror Special this Christmas. Charlie Brooker has penned a dystopian future festive tale, that intertwines three stories to deliver a dramatic and thrilling twist. It’s satirical, comic, disturbing, and thought provoking. Not to be missed.”

The anthology show, which is ironically made by the channel's comedy department, began life in 2011 and has already aired two series of three episodes each.

Brooker has written most of them, including all of series two, but the episode The Entire History of You from series one was written by Peep Show writer Jesse Armstrong.

Black Mirror explores the sinister and troubling side of technology in self-contained stories with different cast members.

In series one, The National Anthem concerned a fictional Prime Minister played by Rory Kinnear who was forced to have sex with a pig in order to save the life of an (also fictional) member of the royal family.

In series two, the episode Be Right Back saw Hayley Attwell play a grieving girlfriend who buys a robot to take the place of her dead boyfriend.

In February, RadioTimes.com broke the news that a single episode of Black Mirror was planned for this year – and with the festive timing it appears C4 has got it in under the wire just in time.

Mad Men star Jon Hamm is to star in the Christmas special of Charlie Brooker's dark comedy Black Mirror.

Hamm, whose other credits include 30 Rock and film drama Million Dollar Arm, will be joined by fellow actors Rafe Spall and Oona Chaplin.

"I am beyond thrilled to be a part of the Black Mirror Christmas Special. I have been a massive fan of the show since its inception," Hamm said.

The 90-minute special starts filming in the UK this week.

Hamm added that Black Mirror's "dark humour and intelligent observation of our society and values hooked me deeply as a viewer and I'm honoured that Charlie and the rest of the creative team have asked me to participate in wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas".

The series takes a bleak look at modern society, and is more specifically concerned with how technology affects our lives.

The first episode of Black Mirror back in 2011 won a Golden Rose for best comedy at the Rose d'Or Television Festival.

Journalist and broadcaster Brooker said: "I'm revoltingly happy that Jon, Rafe and Oona are participating in the horrible pageant that is Black Mirror. As far as I'm concerned, their presence is a huge Christmas present that's arrived early."

Black Mirror describes itself as an anthology series which taps into our contemporary unease about the modern world.

Chaplin, who is the granddaughter of silent movie star Charlie Chaplin, has starred in TV series including BBC One war drama The Crimson Field, HBO fantasy drama Game of Thrones and BBC Two political thriller The Hour.

Spall's body of work includes the films Prometheus, Life of Pi and Shaun of the Dead.

He is the son of actor Timothy Spall and his wife Shane.

Rafe, Jon and Oona :clap1: all great

Watched the first four this afternoon...

USS Callister
Hang the DJ
Crocodile
Arkangel

Hang the DJ had a real San Junipero feel to it, wasn't as good though. Arkangel is the only one so far that fell flat for me. Great concept, just poorly written in my opinion.

Having watched all the episodes, my ranking is thus:

USS Callister ("stealing my pussy is a ****ing red line" is my favourite quote of the series and Nanette works fantastically as the protagonist. I went into it expecting more-or-less a straightforward Star Trek homage, which didn't interest me much, but by the end I absolutely loved it)
Hang the DJ (the noise that Lenny makes after... ahem, tending to Amy's nether regions is my second favourite quote of the series. Just a cute episode, and I liked how the 99.8% thing was all tied up at the end)
Crocodile (I really, really enjoyed this episode for all its bleakness, up until where she kills Shazia, where it just becomes torture porn [killing the blind baby was waaaay too far], and I felt like the ending itself could have been a lot stronger. But as I said, I thought most of the episode was great, and I liked the whole researching-into-a-collision-with-a-pizza-van-for-insurance-purposes-turns-into-accidental-discovery-of-a-murderer type thing)
Black Museum (Jack's new girlfriend pinning a toy monkey up against the wall and repeatedly swearing at it was joyous [though probably not for the toy monkey, I'm guessing] and I thought the last ten minutes or so were brilliant, if not slightly on-the-nose in its attempt to be woke. However, I hated the first story, and I'm really not sure why they decided to copy the structure of White bloody Christmas of all episodes)
Metalhead (I get what they were going for here and I do think that they did it well, but post-apocalyptic horror just isn't really my cup of tea, and I ended up wishing that the dog had caught her a lot sooner to get the whole thing over and done with)
Arkangel (meh. None of the characters were likeable, the story was bland and predictable, and I was left with a sense of apathy at the end rather than catharsis. Also, Rosemarie Dewitt didn't age a single day and that really freaks me out)

Yeah, Crocodile went by pretty fast and I wasn't expecting it to end so abruptly. I disagree with it just being "torture porn" though... I thought that the concept of harvesting memories added quite a bit of depth to the woman's killings and helped to make it more believable. As horrific as the ending was, I thought the irony of it was quite clever (she didn't have to kill the baby because it was blind, but in doing so she ended up getting grassed up by a Guinea Pig)

Yeah, I suppose her actions are given too much logic (well, maybe not logic, but there's definitely a clear progression in Mia's desperation) to be written of as torture porn. I still feel as though the last ten minutes or so were meant mainly to shock a la Shut Up and Dance, and I don't think that's the kind of ending that the story leading up to it deserved. Sure, we need to see in some way how her desperation to avoid being caught has gotten out of control and how she's painted herself into a corner, but "she brutally kills everyone who comes in her way" feels a bit gratuitous, especially the baby/guinea pig scene

I watched Black Museum just because I liked the name :joker: still got three more to watch, I enjoyed it but at the same time it felt a little bit like a cop out? the first two stories could have easily been their own episodes, albeit more fleshed out and such, putting them in with the main plot of the convict being her dad made it feel a bit like a treehouse of horror episode? Idk I liked it but I think they could have just made a whole episode about him being the killer/not being the killer and then the outcome of it

omg ALSO something that annoyed me, when they start showing the pieces in the museum and you realise everything is all connected, I started wondering if any of the other pieces were linked from the episodes I hadn’t seen, and I was wondering about it so much I missed the start of his story :fist: I don’t like that they’re all connected now either, it would have been a lot better to keep them apart :nono:

It essentially followed the exact same, oddly specific structure as White Christmas (a frame story comprised of three sub-stories: the first sub-story, in which the narrator "helps" another character with technology which ends up causing them irreversible damage, doing little other than to establish the narrator as slightly dodgy; the second sub-story in which the narrator uses cookies to effectively wear a person down until they submit... technology which returns in the episode's climax to punish one of the characters in the frame story; and the third sub-story in which the focus shifts, either to the person the narrator is telling the story to [as in White Christmas] or to a different location [the hospital to the prison in Black Museum], leading to the resolution in which at least one of the two characters we've been following throughout gets their comeuppance, usually using the technology seen in the third sub-story)

tl;dr: I have no idea why they followed this structure again, but White Christmas did it better

Yeah

as it was nearing the end I thought it would've been better had they gone down the route of her being desensitized to violence and then she started smashing her mum's head in and I was like.. . Oh.

She should've killed her to make it more depressing. :)

I decided to give this a go after many times considering it, and I will say that I've been very pleasantly surprised by the first series! While I do think it peaks at The National Anthem and gradually the episodes decline (just a little, not noticeably) in quality, Charlie Brooker is really talented at creating dystopian fantasies.

Fifteen Million Merits while very good with some fantastic acting, could really have been shortened to forty five/fifty minutes like the rest. The Entire History of You was also good, I just didn't find the plot as interesting as The National Anthem or FMM.

USS Callister > Crocodile > Metalhead > Arkangel > Hang the DJ > Black Museum.

The first two were the only two where I was engrossed. The others I thought were actually quite poor.

White Bear might be one of the most horrifying yet brilliant pieces of TV I’ve ever seen. I’m still shook!

A few episodes were excellent t and it was all great viewing... However... Overall I would say it's the weakest season so far. It's like it's forgotten how to be bleak without being TOO bleak? Pretty much every episode this time either had a totally grim ending (Crocodile, Metalhead) of which I found crocodile actually over the top, a relatively happy ending (DJ) which as a one off I didn't mind like San Junipero... or a somewhat triumphant ending (Callister, Black Museum and in my opinion, Arkangel).

So it's like... In 4/6 of the episodes things pretty much turn out OK? Like I said they were still good TV, it's just not very Black Mirror :joker:. Where were the nuanced endings that really left us pondering?

I watched Hang the DJ today, probably my favourite of the season so far.

I loved the twist although I expected after all that one of them would have just been like 'nah, don't fancy that' and left before the date could start.

My only issue with it is that it tried to be another San Junipero and having one unabashedly happy episode per season will taint what made SJ such a special episode.

Tbh, San Junipero was kinda bittersweet, and kinda tragic and bloody depressing too. :(

(I'm the one that unplugs all the servers and kills their afterlife :))

Yeah, I would say this season felt the most like it was trying to be Black Mirror and not 100% succeeding.

I watched Metalhead and Black Museum.

I liked Metalhead but it was quite slight on terms of story or content and I felt the concept of the world or it's circumstances wasn't explored enough.

I loved Black Museum, It's probably my favourite episode of the season all in all. It's just a well paced, well written story and I loved all the little nods to past episodes.

My ranking tbh.

Black Museum > Hang The DJ > USS Callister > Crocodile >Arkangel > Metalhead

I've just watched San Junipero and I was aware of how critically acclaimed it is and how the fans lap it up but honestly? I didn't rate it at all, quite boring and didn't seem very 'Black Mirror' to me.

White Bear, Nosedive and Shut Up and Dance the best three confirmed, write it in stone.

even though I've yet to see the last two episodes of S3 and the whole of S4

I can't work out if the end of Arkangel was supposed to be bad / scary? Like I think it was supposed to seem ominous with her getting in the truck but in real life, hitchhikers are usually totally fine and she was escaping her terrifying and potentially dangerously controlling and anxious mother who was well on track to mess her up for life. Surely it's a happy ending .

Especially as I was convinced the tablet thing was going to break with the "censorship" turned up full leaving her basically blind and deaf half of the time...

Yeah I think it was supposed to be a "happy, at least for Black Mirror" ending (for the daughter, that is)

I personally think it was a bad ending tbh.

Of course it was a bad ending. The technology completely screwed up their relationship and it would never be repaired.

SEE? THIS is why Arkangel had so many incredibly brilliant and Black Mirror directions to go in and they chose... not much.

Ashley.

Yeah it would've been good to have seen the "controlling mother" angle, such as putting the censorship on full as "punishment" for wrongdoings and generally sending her child mad. It was all just a bit plain and the ending wasn't believable.

Yeah, because she put the device away in a box quite quickly into the episode, the third act with the daughter lashing out so violently didn't feel quite so earned.
