A Lancashire man who bit off his girlfriend's nose before going on the run naked has been jailed.

Robert Wilson, 39, from Burnley, attacked Jane Ireland while she slept in her home in July 2010.

He hid in woods overnight then tried to steal a car in Simonstone. Armed with a knife, he was arrested after a struggle with police in which he was Tasered.

The judge described Wilson as "a plainly dangerous offender" and said he must serve a minimum of seven years.

He pleaded guilty at earlier hearings to wounding with intent, carrying an offensive weapon, aggravated burglary and assault with intent to resist arrest.

Burnley Crown Court heard Ms Ireland, who is still in a relationship with Wilson, awoke at her home in Hapton Road, Padiham, with the defendant's fingers down her throat.

She said that she felt an "excruciating pain" as Wilson bit off most of her nose.

Crashed car

She and her 14-year-old daughter escaped the house as Wilson took hold of a large carving knife in pursuit. Wilson, who was naked, then fled to nearby woods, the court heard.

The next day he entered a house in Simonstone and threatened the owner with the knife, asking for her car keys. He dressed in some of the woman's clothes but crashed her car while trying to reverse it.

Armed officers later found him in Clough Lane. He was told to drop the knife but responded by shouting "come on" and making a sound like a police siren.

One officer twice fired a Taser at him, in the chest and back, but Wilson continued to approach him and they grappled on the floor. He was finally detained when other officers arrived.

Girlfriend 'supportive'

The court heard Wilson had been in a relationship with Ms Ireland for four months. He had been released from a life term in prison, resulting from convictions for wounding, by a parole board a year earlier.

Ms Ireland's nose was reconstructed after the attack using skin from her forehead.

Gillian Crossley, defending, said Ms Ireland continued to visit Wilson in prison and was "supportive of him".

The man is clearly insane and the girlfriend must be deluded .....

Given that he was out on licence from an earlier life sentence, having been released only four months prior to these incidents, kind of makes you a bit wary of the licencing and early release procedures and assessments eh?

What a pair of freaks :bored:

I have no sympathy for her, what kind of idiot stays with someone who does that...I do, however, feel a bit sorry for her daughter...and think that if the father is not around(or is also unfit) she would be better off in care really. Her mother is obviously unstable :/

Robert Mackenzie Wilson, 39, launched his brutal assault on Jane Ireland after calling her "fat".

Knife-wielding Wilson then fled into woods overnight near her home in Padiham, Lancashire, on July 18 last year.

The following day he emerged to hold a woman at knifepoint in her home as he demanded her car keys and then caused a village primary school to go on "lockdown" as he wandered at large.

Wilson was finally apprehended near the school but not before charging towards an officer, who fired two shots from a Taser without effect.

When arrested Wilson still had the barb of the Taser stuck in his back as he told them the weapon was "********** ****".

Wilson, formerly of Burnley, was jailed for 33 months in 1994 for wounding with intent when he attacked the new boyfriend of an ex-partner.

In March 2003, he was given a life term for three counts of wounding - the stabbings of his then girlfriend and two neighbours who came to her aid

The lunatic is an absolute menace and should be put down like a dog - regrettably, UK law will not permit it .....

Shasown's post answers your question.

But suggesting that he 'should be put down like a dog' and that it's a shame that's not permitted in the UK is just ridiculously over the top response to this article, especially considering there's been far more barbaric crimes reported recently. But mainly that you'd even suggest such a thing...this is 2011, times have moved on...we don't hypocritically enforce capital punishment on those who have committed severe crimes.

How is it hypocritical to want a psychopath to die? also yes it maybe 2011 but have you noticed that the crime rate has shot through the roof because there is no punishment for any crimes anymore.

No just a normal forum member who thinks that maybe the message of the season isnt getting through to some people.

As for me being "at it now", again just like Jack I didnt question your sanity just your attitude. Why would that make you think I was a physician?

For crying out loud people.

Let folk have their own opinions FGS - without resorting to implying their crazy or 'not normal' or drunk - simply because they don't share the same views.

It's meant to be Christmas time - a bit of good old fashioned kindness / respect to each other wouldn't go amiss.
