View Full Version : I'm getting Married!
I've been going out with my girlfriend for a year and a half now and on Christmas day I proposed to her- we're getting married next year.
Just thought i'd post- I haven't been online a lot recently and hope to be more in the future.
So excited right now though!
Niamh.

Congrats, I hope it lasts.
I won't judge you for your age but I'd wait until my 20s personally no matter how long I'd been with someone
I am happy for you that you are that happy with your girlfriend, but have to agree with Niamh, that it seems awfully young. Besides the fact of college, Uni for you and your girlfriend to think about, and a job to support you both, and a place to live, that's without saving to get married, and only a year to save for that in? But I will say congrats all the same :)

No, it's legal.
At 16 its only legal with parental permission (unless you run away to Gretna Green). If your mum & dad need to give you permission to get married then you're probably too young

16 and proposed to a girlfriend of 18 months? :laugh2:
I'll await news of the split. It reminds me of a girl who went to my school who spent the first year of sixth form all happy and feeling very "grown up" as her boyfriend had proposed to her and she was "planning" the wedding and even mentioned she couldn't wait to have children. Lol.
Anyway, september came to start the second year of sixth form and the engagement was off and the ring was apparently a cheapy from Argos.

I fail to understand how signing a marriage certificate means he's happy and content (the fact he got that word wrong no doubt means he doesn't know what it means) because at 16 it makes no difference to his life.
It doesn't give you money, career prospects, a house, a car, or anything.
Yes, being in a relationship can be great and not all about material things but to suggest it means you're "going somewhere in life" is ridiculous. It's more likely hindering any future experiences you are yet to have.
lily.
30-12-2011, 07:45 PM
You picked the worst place to announce this tbh.
If trolling, then fair enough.
If serious, then I guess you'll figure out your own life without the assistance of the TiBBers.
I wouldn't be in such a hurry to move out of your parents house though. I'd wait until one or both of you are working full-time. It's expensive you know. Then again, I don't know your home situation. Your parents might be rich for all I know, and will buy you a mansion as a wedding present.
I think it's nice that you love her enough to think of marrying her, but you don't need to do everything right away. You can always be engaged for a few years.. then get married.. that'll give you both time to grow up a bit, and figure out what you're doing with your lives/careers.
You don't need to rush into anything. Get engaged if that makes you both happy, buy a nice ring, but don't plan a wedding until you're both out of your teens. That gives you time to get financially stable, and to get school/college out of the way. As others have said, it does make sense to live together before you get married, as the relationship changes lots when you do that and you need time to get used to it.
So to recap.. my advice to you [as the elder stateswoman of TiBB] is:
Get engaged just now if that's what you both want.
Wait 4 or 5 years before you get married.
Try living together once you're done with college.
Concentrate on getting a decent job so you can support yourselves.
Keep using protection.. the last thing you need is a pregnancy to further complicate your life.
Finally.. Congratulations.

I think both sets of parents have a good attitude to this, they arent bothered probably because they realise that objecting to it would upset their little darlings and make them go ahead with this daft idea.
Given time Joe and/or his girlfriend will realise its probably too soon for either of them to commit to marriage.
Though you never know the age of both sets of parents might be about 34 or younger ;)
Incidentally both sets of parents permission are needed even in Gretna Green. Its 18 to get married anywhere in the UK now.
