THE TV visionary behind the ground-breaking reality show Big Brother has been honoured with a knighthood.
Peter Bazalgette – known throughout the industry as “Baz” – said it was a “delightful compliment”.
The 58-year-old receives his New Year’s Honour for services to broadcasting. He began his TV career as a BBC news trainee after graduating from Cambridge.
He worked in current affairs and also as a researcher for Esther Rantzen’s series That’s Life.
When he moved into producing, he claimed to have created the concept of the celebrity chef and was the brains behind a stream of reality shows including Ready Steady Cook, Ground Force, Changing Rooms, Deal Or No Deal and Fame Academy.
His association with Big Brother began when his production company, Bazal, was bought up by the Dutch TV giant Endemol in 1990.
In 2000 Sir Peter oversaw the UK launch of the show, which, 11 years later, is still going strong. A new series of Celebrity Big Brother begins on Thursday on Channel 5.
What would his great-great-grandather have thought about his great-great-grandson getting a knighthood for something less than constructive or worthwhile ?

The man who built the first London sewer system in 1865 (amongst other "great works") and saved tens of thousands of Londoners from death by cholera, Sir Joseph ..... ;)
The system is still in use today ..... Victorians, eh ..... :)

:amazed: so it could be said that one of them built the gutters, the other updated it and put it on television!

Peter Basalgette's great great grandfather, Sir Joseph Bazalgette, designed and built London's sewer system. One was honoured for pumping sh** out of our homes, and one has been honoured for pumping sh** in.

 the guy brought an innovative TV program to our screens for over a decade, made celebrities out of dozens of regular people and gave them a quality of life they otherwise probably would never have gotten to experience - not that bad an achievement when you think about it.

I was making a joke.
However, his knighthood is for services to broadcasting, not specifically for importing a successful foreign format, which wouldn't be that great an achievement when you think about it.

I'd have thought my use of  would tell you I understood the joke
Aye but seeing as we're on a BB forum, discussing Big Brother is generally the first port of call where applicable..

Yeah, I see that now. I don't really do emoticons. I never know whether it means you're laughing with, or laughing at.
The sticky-tongue-out one I get, so I am not a completely hopeless case!
