View Full Version : Sick of the boo’s?

If there is one thing that is really getting up my goat lately it’s the booing and braying crowd. It gets worse as the years go on. Its now the norm for a contestant to be booed, while only a very few get cheered.

I remember the first series of BB, there was genuine fear that Mel would get a bad reaction. Nick had to be sneaked out the back door for his crimes. Yet in 2011 the winner was booed off the stage.

Crowds tend to be sheep, like on the internet, there is safety in the anonymity.

Natasha was a nice housemate. She got on with everyone, she “played” the game and was honest about why she was there. Yet the majority of the crowd booed her in and out of the house. Why? Because of her past history. Not because of her performance, or her likability as a contestant.

Has the pantomime gone too far?

Is the pure vitriol that is poured out on eviction night just too much?

In my mind it sounds more like the crowd you would have gotten at a gladiatorial arena, crying for blood to be spilled. Rather than a live audience for a TV show.

Would the individuals be better behaved in a seated, well lit, studio? Of course they would. Faces could be seen and the HM’s would be able to look everyone in the eye.

I can’t be the only one who’s stomach turns to knots as the host calls out the names, waiting for the reaction of the crowd. And that is whether I like them or not.

It has now gone past the pantomime boo. And I, for one, believe that its gone too far.

Wouldn’t it be a better show if 90% of the HM’s got a half decent reception on leaving the house. Boo and chant as the host calls their name, but once its done, its done. They are out.

I don't even watch the eviction shows anymore because I feel awful watching people getting booed.

I feel the same, it's not my favourite part of the show.

The mob are just terrible now.

They'll boo you unless you're a pretty yet dull female... see Louise/Georgia or a fit lad who's absolutely repulsive... Kirk, John James.

I love it. One of my best moments is when all their names are mentioned and we hear the reaction.

I love seeing the HMs face when they get booed into next week. They either embrace it brilliantly or completely look terrified :joker:

I understand what you are saying, but "villain" is a difficult one to define. Nasty Nick was a "villain", but by todays standards he was fairly tame.

Someone who is genuinely nasty might deserve a bad reception. But people who have differences of opinion, different ways of viewing a situation, or have different ways of coping with their environment, do they?

Have you seen some of the people in that crowd? They should take a long hard look at themselves before they judge others.. they're grim

I can understand booing if a housemate has done something particularly hideous, but they do tend to boo almost everyone now unless they are perfect (In which case they are usually dull). Didn't almost everyone from the last BB get either boos or mixed- there was no out and out cheers, or am I misremembering...

But at that point its still pantomime, its feed back from their behaviour.

However it needn't be too over the top - and it should end, to a certain extent, once they leave the house.

I think you are correct - which isn't a good thing when you think of it.

People go into the house for different reasons. Money, fame, because they are fans. But who wants to be a competitor in a show that will guarantee you will be hated by the public?

When a housemate I don't like leaves I want to see them booed back to the stone age. It's not like they don't expect it. It's not like the boos only started this year.

But Grace's exit was an exception. I remember that year very well and Grace did herself no favours by throwing water over another contestant, just before exiting.

It was the case that most HM's got a so-so to good reception, with a few getting the extremes of bad, to ecstatic.

But that has changed. Most, to all, now get booed. With some getting hounded off stage, while some get a decent mix of cheers along with boos.

true say before HMs did get normal crowd reactions with the odd exception of boos
but boos can be funny =)

I think the Boo's from the crowd are showing the worse side of people.

I think it is just like the behaviour we see on internet forums were people
can bitch and slag people off because they feel they are anonymous and
undetectable. It is just a form of bullying and showing the malicious and
mean-spirited side of people.

I agree. The producers encourage it really, listen to Marcus now it's just all saracasm.

I don't mind the booing but somehow the crowd seem at odds with the actual view of the public now a lot of the time.

I don't really mind it though,it's something you just have to rise above it and the craziest thing was on BB last year, Aaron getting boos and he was the 'whole' series winner not just the final days one with the voting public.

I prefer the booing and cheering as opposed to when Davina talked to the house on eviction nights and it all went totally silent.

I think some contestants get harsher receptions that I don't think they really would get if the crowd was genuine (Freddie,Aaron,Siavash and Marcus) I could understand Aaron's though as he was moody lol,but the others that i've mentioned I really do not understand why they was so badly booed.

Booing Is like an animal noise. Which is exactly what it is Mindless animal like behavour.....

Booing ruins the entertainment atmosphire of shows. It belongs to the arrogant days of music hall audiences throwing tomatoes at entertainers just for the mindless hell of it.

The booing brigade are the mindles brigade........State of the nation. Mass bullying of solitary individuals. The booing brigade are the coward brigade. Like some who hide behind the internet to abuse others. The booing brigade hide behind their sad personalities that know no better......Like druggies mindless idiots that lead a stupid life.......

the boos, are just part of the pantomime, the dirtiest trick ever pulled on bb was when they sent benazire home on that bus,can you image what it must of felt like for her to get all that way, only to get screwed.

Well thats a little depressing!

You enjoy watching an anonymous crowd jeer and bray at someone who, usually, has done nothing more than do on TV what most of us do on a day to day basis in our real lives.

Surely BB is about the Characters, not the hate?

A few years ago the Boo's were just part of the pantomime, but that has changed. Now they are the regular feature.

Imagine going to an actual pantomime and having the audience boo the hero's as loud as the villains? Or having the crowd jeer the ending simply because they preferred, read as fancied, one of the supporting cast? It just wouldn't make sense.

The boo's have gone beyond pantomime when they are given to everyone that comes out. It no longer seems to matter if the contestant is "good" or "bad" - and I speak in terms of entertainment value.

For me the crowd are now out for blood and most of it seems mindless.

I think some contestants get harsher receptions that I don't think they really would get if the crowd was genuine (Freddie,Aaron,Siavash and Marcus) But that wasn't always the case - which is why I started this thread.

It has gotten to the stage where the crowd are the biggest bullies of the show. We all complain when we see HM #1 do something we don't like to HM #2. But having 100 people maliciously booing simply because a person is slightly odd just doesn't seem right.

I feel it's getting rather predictable now and that detracts from the HM's who probably deserve to be booed - the whole Grace eviction was epic because she was awful in the house and the boos reflected the public feeling to her behaviour - now everyone is booed regardless of what they have done which is just daft and ruins it imo.

The problem though as I said earlier is that the producers make us look down on the HMs by looking at them as just being a joke, instead of as people who we may like some things with but dislike others. This wasn't always the case, but from perhaps BB6 or BB7 onwards it started to become a feature of the show. Now it's reached the point where Marcus is virtually laughing at them during the HLs. This approach makes it difficult to really care enough about those in the house and makes the celeb series harder to get through, but would make the main series impossible to like for it's length. If someone is just a shallow joke figure the jokes end up being lame by the 2d or 3rd week. CH5 have really brought this to the final stage and made it very hard to like people on the show enough, strange as they have made it a vote to save but it seems only reluctantly to me as they prefer two up for eviction.

It's definitely too much, but like Davina used to always say it's just Pantomime. People just enjoy feeling like they finally get to express their feeling about a certain housemate, and obviously everyone can't articulate it in a polite way in a huge crowd like that.

At the same time i think it says something about the show, and how passionate people really get for it. BB fans really are a passionate bunch. I think that's a good thing.

But for most of Davina's time on the show it kinda was, the real nastiness of the crowd has only come out in the last few years.

Also large groups of people can articulate, they can cheer, they can laugh, they can hold banners, and they can boo - but without the intensity of the current shows. It wouldn't take a whole lot of effort to adjust the "tone" of the crowd.

At the same time i think it says something about the show, and how passionate people really get for it. BB fans really are a passionate bunch. I think that's a good thing.
However, to me, the crowd now take more pleasure in booing, than cheering. Those celebrating get drowned, fast. Essentially the crowd are there to vent, not to support. And thats not passion...thats rage.

starry
18-01-2012, 04:53 PM
People aren't as passionate as they used to be, the audience has declined. That's because it used to be as much about liking HMs as hating them, now people like those in the house less so they like the show less.
