View Full Version : First Megaupload...

Filesonic, one of the Internet’s leading cyberlocker services, has taken some drastic measures following the Megaupload shutdown and arrests last week. In addition to discontinuing its affiliates rewards program and not yet paying accrued money to members, the site has disabled all sharing functionality, leaving users only with access to their own files.
To users of systems like BitTorrent, file-sharing means just that – the sharing of files with others. But this weekend users of Filesonic, one of the Internet’s leading cyberlocker services, sharing files is currently a thing of the past.
According to a shock announcement by the site, all file-sharing functionality has now been disabled, leaving current users only with access to files that they have personally uploaded. Many hundreds of thousands (probably millions) of links all around the web have now been rendered useless, at least temporarily.
But the bad news for the site’s users doesn’t end there. In the last few hours, before file-sharing was disabled, Filesonic also ended its rewards program, meaning that uploaders to the site no longer earn money when people download their files. A moot point perhaps, since no-one will be downloading files anyway.
However, there is the matter of what will happen to the reward money that was sitting in uploader’s accounts before the rewards program was discontinued. Will it be paid out, or will it simply disappear? Many users fear the latter.

It difficult to moderate what people are uploading though, to be certain they would have to download and check inside every single zip, then if they do that people will start complaining about privacy etc.

I don't see how tv shows and newspapers come into it?
I'm not saying these sites shouldnt be held to certain standards i'm pointing out how difficult it would be for them to check every single file that is uploaded to the site, not only that how would they deal with files that are password protected? and even if they did all that I think there would still be privacy problems to deal with.

Never illegally downloaded a game or movie, use to download WWE shows and albums (basically I don't want something that I probably wont like) and if I love it I go and buy the CD
could of used youtube I suppose but mehNow there's the thing, someone in the US needs to make some sort of legal "On Demand" channel for the world, it could be subscription based at a reasonable price. What these big companies don't understand is people pirate their things because they're either hard to get or cost too much.
Gabe Newell of Valve's video game service Steam said
"We think there is a fundamental misconception about piracy. Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem," he said. "If a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24 x 7, purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer, and the legal provider says the product is region-locked, will come to your country 3 months after the US release, and can only be purchased at a brick and mortar store, then the pirate's service is more valuable."

People wouldn't have to download TV shows if they aired in the UK like a day or two after the US airdate, these people expect us to wait for weeks and sometimes months for new episodes of some shows. It's a joke. :bored:

VideoBB were bad liars anyway, you would watch 10 minutes of something and they'd say you'd watched over an hours worth. At least when Megavideo would **** you over it would only be by 5 minutes or something

Yeah that's true actually, it'd keep telling me I used my 72 minutes when I'd only just started watching something

At least Wupload is safe for the minute.

Scott, the torrent sites can be taken. There's already a ton of legal action against the big guns amongst them... The Pirate Bay for example.
lily.
24-01-2012, 09:38 PM
Now there's the thing, someone in the US needs to make some sort of legal "On Demand" channel for the world, it could be subscription based at a reasonable price. What these big companies don't understand is people pirate their things because they're either hard to get or cost too much.
I would pay for that. The USA has Hulu where they can get all the shows already aired. If there were some kind of international Hulu, even if it were subscription-based, people would happily pay for it.
It won't happen though, because it takes money away from companies like Sky who can rip us off and still provide second-rate programming.

We [the people] can't really fight it though, can we?
I mean, what can we really do?
The 'anonymous' sorts can do lots of stuff, but individually, we can't do much at all.

We can fight it if we make a stand, the only reason they are holding off at the moment is because we have fought back so far.

Nothing to do with us, it's only because of the likes of Wikipedia staging their blackout that they've become a bit cautious
Reality is we're not really in any position to do anything to stop this, expert hackers like Anonymous can, huge important websites can, but not us, not unless there was maybe some kind of huge collective action

I think that trying to stamp out the sites altogether is a little bit pointless. It's just a big cat and mouse game that, in my opinion, will never end. The only way for the music industry to claw back some of the revenue they've lost at the hands of torrents etc, is for them to meet those illegally downloading music halfway by offering some kind of benefits or new method of listening to music for less money. Just stamping out the sites isn't going to fix it.. same goes for torrents too.

It's funny, for years I laughed at conspiracy theorists for saying that we arent really free, we're just pawns, and that one day, the governments would pull away the sets, the props and reveal the brick wall that was hidden behind the facade of freedom all along.
Capitalism really is as dirty as communism.

This might sound square, but I've never used a torrent or pirated a game...though I did download songs off Youtube, only to decide they all sounded **** and bought them all on Amazon Mp3...I mean come on, 99p a song? It's hardly expensive.
But if you want to download an album of an artist who you've only heard a couple of singles off and end up disliking the majority of the album, thats £8/9 pretty much wasted :/
Also, some songs are online that aren't available to buy, oooor they're not available to buy in your own country so you have to download them illegally
Shaun
25-01-2012, 01:34 PM
the thing is everything that's legal has now been converted to be pretty much the same as illegally downloading. I mean what's really the difference between listening to a Lady GaGa song on repeat on YouTube all day and having it on your iTunes? They're both free.
Did that guy really get 50 years? :bored:

This is where Valve's Gabe Newell comes in, he says if anyone pirates a game instead of buying it off Steam, that's his fault for not providing a good enough service. :joker: If only someone in Hollywood thought like that
