View Full Version : What do you call the slice of bread on either end of the loaf?

Weird question I know. But I was at school and I found out that there's a bunch of different names for it. I call it the end slice but other people call it the knobby, and others call it the heel of the loaf but t'eva.

Had this same discussion with some work colleagues recently.

Personally i call it the HEEL

Other words i heard it referred to were:
CRUST
END PIECE
OUTSIDER
LOAFER

Thats what we call it, but the hind ender doesnt look right typed out because of the way we talk we miss out the D so its kinda like hin ener :laugh:

The crust is the bit around the slices. Just because the end slice has one half covered in crust, doesn't make it the crust. It's like calling planet Earth 'water', just because there's a lot of it :idc:

By the way, I've just gotten off the phone from Martha -who by the way, works as a bread technician- and she says it's heel :hmph:

Call it the heel. The crust is the outer surface of the entire loaf, unless people have a different name for that too. ;)

I'm not sure it is.. I live in London and most people seem to say end slice.

But then one of my friends says "nobby" and suggested it was an Irish thing, yet I'm part Irish and no-one in my family who's actually from Ireland has ever said that. :laugh:

I've never called it that, but I use that phrase to describe the end of something or the back of it..

The 'hin en' of the concert.. the 'hin en' of the train lol

I'm Irish and I've never heard anyone refer to it as nobby, Heel is the only thing I've ever heard anyone here call it

I have heard "crust" but I've never, ever heard "end slice". But then I'm talking Bethnal Green/Bow east London where my Dad's family originate from and not Romford, Essex. Unless your family originally comes from the East End?

Anyhoo... I'm shocked to see there's still only one vote for Nobby! And it's such a good word...
