As far as I know this has only been tried once before and that was in one of the social group things (by Dezzy I think), and everyone always forgets they exist so it didn't take off. So I'll try it on the main forum and see how it goes.

- Once about 6-7 people sign up the first film can get picked
- People will have a certain amount of days to watch the film (don't know how many yet.. everyone can decide that once we know who is in)
- Make sure any film is available to watch somewhere online for free, because I doubt many would actually go out and pay for it
- To make sure the film isn't something ****e like Disaster Movie, it must be rated above a 6.0 on www.imdb.com

Think that's it..

So sign up if you want

First Film: Drive

CWX34ShfcsE

Stars: Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Albert Brooks, Christina Hendricks.
IMDb Rating: 8.0
Critic Rating: 7.9

Ranked as the #1 film of 2011 by 5 Critic sites, including Rolling Stone and Total Film. It also has the greatest soundtrack ever. Came out towards the end of 2011 so I don't think many people in here will have seen it.

Shaun
10-02-2012, 04:33 AM
Just finished it.

I loved it. The long silences between the Driver and pretty much everyone else were a little bit frustrating at times but it was a great story, and I liked the open ending. The soundtrack was excellent too, very 80s (in fact a lot of it, such as the credits styling, reminded me of GTA Vice City).

Sad that Shannon died though. Just because he's the dad from Malcolm in the Middle

Oh and the violence was naaaaasty. The bit with him stamping on the elevator-guy's head :yuk:

I'd probably give it a 9/10 though. The cinematography and the tension were just perfect.

The film itself was good; especially enjoyed the opening scene, and the acting was great from everyone especially Gosling, Mulligan and Cranston; who I love from Breaking Bad so like shaun mentioned was sad when he got killed Overall I would give it a 4/5

SharkAttack
10-02-2012, 04:42 PM
I really enjoyed the overall vibe of this gem. It had a grittiness that was apparent with its violence and yet the film felt surreal, dream-like. Double the vote on Shaun who said it was like Vice City/80s style with the music and credits. Not a film I'd watch twice because once is sometimes enough. 9/10 is what I gave it a few months ago, and still believe it deserves that score.

Samuel.
10-02-2012, 06:20 PM
I didn't like it. I found the first half dull, and the story didn't really do anything for me. The violence was over the top, disgustingly so. The soundtrack was the only thing I enjoyed about it. So I can't really give it anything other than a 1/4.

It just didn't click with me in the slightest.

Josy
11-02-2012, 09:22 PM
3/5

Not as good as I expected it to be, slow to get started and the anti dialogue scenes are irritating and also a bit awkward at times, I got a bit more interested just under half way through and even though the violence is a bit OTT at times I think it does fit in well with the style of the film.

Agree with others that have mentioned the whole 80s/video game style.

Never saw the need for the mask scene though?

Black Dagger
11-02-2012, 09:29 PM
I liked this film a fair bit, I was bored in certain areas of the film, but I really enjoyed the violence /sadistic, it wasn't always necessary or needed in my honest opinion but it added a certain aspect to the film and gave it a much needed lift (no pun intended), Ryan Gosling is adorable as well and was a fantastic lead role. 4/5

Roy Mars III
11-02-2012, 09:38 PM
4.5/5

Best film of last year. The movie is over the top and supposed to be. The movie is perfectly put together and just amazing in general

One of the best movies Gosling has ever done, he did a great job in it. His facial expressions and body movements say more than even words could.

A cult classic in the years to come for sure

Finally watched it.

Its actually the best film I've seen in a while.

Its a film I wouldn't think I would like but I have to admit, its worth a watch.

I think its a slow burner until the end of the film and the silence between Gosling and Mulligan was a little unnecessary, but that's not their faults its the director. I thought the acting was top form from them.

I agree with everyone else in that it was like an 80s video game. The soundtrack was different and not what you would expect from a film of this nature.

I thought the story was good, the violence was maybe a little OTT but it didn't really affect my view on the story.

I'd give the film a 5/5 for the fact that its the best film I've watched for a long time.

Marc
11-02-2012, 11:26 PM

MTVN
12-02-2012, 12:13 AM
Just watched it

It was really good actually, especially the opening scene and the second half. It was a bit slow during the first half at times though, I know it's meant to be all part of his character and the film and everything but it was a painful watching the conversations with the girl (can't remember her name) where they'd exchange a couple of words in a minute. I did like the main character though, and the way they did it where they kept him a mystery, you could say it'd be nice to know a bit more about him but that would kind of defeat the point, although it does make the love story a bit weird, I don't see any real reason why she would be attracted to him tbh lol

The sudden really violent scenes were a bit surprising considering the first half of the film, maybe it was a bit unnecessary but I liked how ruthless it all was, and yeah like others have said the soundtrack was really good, and that's not something I normally care that much about in a film, I'd give it 8/10 overall

Drive 9/10

such an intense movie it's amazing how the main guy hardly ever speaks ( reminded me of Ryan from the OC ) he suited that role really well though.. the relationship between him and Irene was really well done and they didn't turn it into anything to corny or had over the top sex scenes every 20 minutes they focused on the main story more then that which i liked, love the way it ended as well thought he was dead until he blinked after about a minute, the soundtrack was incredible and did the title and credit font remind anyone of Vice City? first thing i thought when i saw it

Second Film: Hachi: A Dog's Tale

Y6U7mAnPtw4

From Academy Award-nominated director Lasse Hallström (2000, The Cider House Rules) comes Hachi: a Dog's Tale, a film based on one of the most treasured and heartwarming true stories ever told. Golden Globe winner Richard Gere (2002, Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, Chicago) stars as Professor Parker Wilson, a distinguished scholar who discovers a lost Akita puppy on his way home from work. Despite initial objections from Wilson’s wife, Cate (Academy Award nominee Joan Allen – 2000, Best Actress, The Contender), Hachi endears himself into the Wilson family and grows to be Parker's loyal companion. As their bond grows deeper, a beautiful relationship unfolds embodying the true spirit of family and loyalty, while inspiring the hearts of an entire town.

I don't really know where to start with Hachi, there's so much that I love about the film. The setting is really picturesque with the little train station. Obviously it differs from he Japanese setting that the true story is based on.

When I first see the film I couldn't believe the Professor dies at work and it got me again this time around.

The music is outstanding throughout the film.

This is my favorite piece of music in the film. Its beautiful, and sad. Especially the scenes of the film its playing along with at the end.
G0RVZoV3fDg

I loved the film so much.

Its heart lifting, funny in some parts, the Skunk part comes to mind, and terribly sad too.

Don't think I've really given away anything big but I'll spoiler this just in case

I liked it, it's an easy to watch and enjoyable film, which is really sad in parts but also quite nice as well. The characters are all really likeable as well and it is all pretty touching, I liked how they all took care of Hachi when he was sat there waiting all those years and I agree with Glenn about the setting, the film overall was pretty well made I thought. It'd probably affect dog lovers & owners the most but even those who aren't will still get drawn into the whole thing, I'd give it a 7/10

Yeah, so I cried...

I'm not sure it was always earnt, some of the tear jerker scenes felt a bit cheap, but it didn't really bother me too much, especially since I love being affected like that by a work of fiction. The music is amazing, I don't think the film would have been as half as emotional without it. Everything about the film is just done really well and it does what it needs to do. Richard Gere was the perfect choice as the owner.

7.5/10

And now I know why I saw the Jurassic Bark similarities, both are based on Hachikō.

Non-fiction (or nonfiction) is the form of any narrative, account, or other communicative work whose assertions and descriptions are understood to be fact. This presentation may be accurate or not—that is, it can give either a true or a false account of the subject in question—however, it is generally assumed that authors of such accounts believe them to be truthful at the time of their composition or, at least, pose them to their audience as historically or empirically true. Note that reporting the beliefs of others in a non-fiction
format is not necessarily an endorsement of the ultimate veracity of those beliefs, it is simply saying it is true that people believe them (for such topics as mythology, religion). Non-fiction can also be written about fiction, giving information about these other works.

It is a true story. There's a statue in Japan of Hachi?

Samuel.
17-02-2012, 03:44 AM
If you want to be pedantic about it. It was quite obvious what I was saying.

MTVN
17-02-2012, 03:45 AM
It's not fact though lol, the real Hachi lived in 1920's Japan in different circumstances probably

Glenn.

Watching the film to the end would of told you it was a true story. As the documented story said. I'm not being pedantic, it's called being right.

MTVN
17-02-2012, 03:48 AM
Yeah based on a true story, the Futurama episode was also based on it, doesn't mean it's non fiction though

The core base of the story is fact. The dog did wait loyally for his master for nine years.
Adapting that kind of story would call for a few changes.

So I've just spent the last half hour crying my eyes out. I'm a mess right now LOL

It was a perfect story, the music was lovely, and...I don't think a film's made me cry this much before, so I'll give it a 9/10 (not a 10 because it's a bit short and there isn't like amazing acting or anything )

Edit. Spoilered. Sorry River Song :joker:

They didn't even get that part right, the dog waited 10 years in the film.

And it was how likeable the characters where, the family and wife, the brilliant portrayal of the owner by Richard Gere (who probably was nothing like the actual owner), how well shot the film was, the music - none of which were part of the original story - that made the film have any affect on me. The basic premise of the film is about the real Hachiko, but I think too much has been added and changed for it to be considered anything other than a film based on a true story.

I'd give it a 9/10 as well, the best dog film i have ever watched anyway

I found Richard Gere really suited to the role of the owner and Sarah Roemer suited to the role of Daughter the Japanese guy was probably my favourite character in the whole film the guy who played him is a really good actor i don't think i've seen him in anything before.. love how they did the setting for where he was waiting for the his owner and how they made the minor characters in the film bond with Hachi whilst he was waiting, also the scene where Hachi was telling the owner to turn around and then he took the ball to him to play fetch for the first time ever before he left was really well done

Not really any big spoilers here but I'll add the tags anyway, dunno how much people will want to not know about it before watching

It was pretty good and I quite like the idea of it and how it was done and everything, did a good job of showing how lonely an existence it would be with only a robot for company, an amazing robot at that mind. I did find it a bit dull in places though, and it didn't capture my interest all that much, I'm not sure I really cared about the fate of the characters in it or anything, but considering it all took place in a pretty small area for the most part and only really had one or two characters they didn't do too bad a job of keeping it interesting without the need for elaborate special effects or things like that. Would probably give it an 7/10 overall

SharkAttack
