View Full Version : Anyone else hate the way most Americans stereotype British people?

Personally, I hate it. Every time I switch on an American television show, they seem to stereotype British people as having posh accents and being, well, camp. Anyone else hate it?
Whenever I've been to America, I've always found they love the British accent.
posh accents and big teeth is the main steriotype, but then we steriotype all Americans as fat trailor trash burger eaters so it balances itself out :)

Yeah it irritates me sometimes when they seem to think we all live in huge townhouses, have a butler and have super posh accents. Its so unrealistic. :joker:
But then again, we stereotype them too, so.

Each nation has there stereotypes.
Welsh - sheep sh*ggers. Inbred valleys.
Scottish - fat. lazy.
Irish - drunks. crazy.
English - posh. teenage pregnancies. arrogant.
This is all pure ignorance, and it only thats a little bit of maturity and the chance to get to know people on this forum from those nations to realise that it's all BS and ridiculous.
Except for Ben who is posh, and I'm sure has 5 children already and always boasts about it :bored:

I'd say they have a pretty good idea what Scottish and N.Irish are like. Not sure about the Welsh.

Well I think it's mainly to do with wanting the masses to understand any foreign accents. It's pretty insular but not many Americans travel outside of their own country on holiday and the producers of said shows seem to think they won't understand any regional dialects so it's best to keep it crisp and clear like the Queen.
Adele said when she appeared in Ugly Betty they made her put on a fake accent when speaking, she was so embarrassed she'd never do it again. lol. And Jaime Murray was told she didn't sound British enough for the audience so had to do a fake one even though she has a relatively posh accent anyway.
The number of forums I've been on for shows like Lost etc aswell and the American posters are talking about "that British chick" or whatever and she was actually Australian just shows how ridiculous it is.

Yes it was the same when I went, they all obsessed over the fact that I had a british accent and seemed to love it. My cousins are American and they are complete anglophiles (right word?) they just love everything associated with the uk/british people and visit every year, sometimes twice a year!

Big teeth? I thought we were stereotyped for having bad teeth because we were behind America when it came to the "cosmetic dentistry" to get perfectly aligned blindingly white teeth.

Funny how you dislike being stereotyped, yet you contradict yourself in your last sentence :joker:. I couldn't care less, anyone who has seen the South Park episode 'Tsst' will know the bit with nanny Stella and how stereotypical yet hilarious it is.
I don't care if they sterotype us, we do it also and not just with Americans. I love our American cousins, a lot of their humour is way superior to ours, and they are probably not far off the mark with some of us :joker: I only get peed off with those idiots from TOWIE making it seem like those of us from Essex are all a bunch of TOWIEs :nono:

Maybe I should tell you what stereotypes that I, an American, have of British citizens, rightly or wrongly.
I think they're an interesting people. I wouldn't be on this forum if I thought otherwise. I think they're a bit naive in valuing (or so they claim) diversity in culture. They seem to want to bring in other peoples from around the world even when there is no logical reason to do so except perhaps as a way of easing their guilt of their imperial past. They seem to be a bit ashamed of their culture and their history. I think they put too much faith in government to look after them. They're suckers for a lot of these global "leftist" schemes like global warming which is really more about enhancing government control rather than saving the planet. They think too highly of soccer. Cricket is an annoying insect, not a sport. They're not that religious which is fine with me since I'm probably in that same boat. The white wigs that people wear in court and the big hair the queen's soldiers wear look silly. They need to get more aggressive in telling the EU to go **** themselves and leave their soverignty alone.
Oh yes, and the teeth thing. I do get the sense that teeth is not as big a priority over there. That may not be fair but I'll tell you what gave me that impression: Tony Blair. That guy had some of the most crooked teeth and if someone over there with that kind of priviledged background never had braces then it must not be as big a deal over there.
British people stereotype Americans so no.
