View Full Version : Do straight men/women like gay men/women?

I was wondering do straight men like gay men and do straight women like lesbian women? when I say 'like' I mean it in a friendly way

Only reason I ask is because I notice lots of women have gay friends and some men have lesbian friends, but you rarely see it the other way around :conf:

Is it down to stereotyping or just difference in personalities?

and its all very well saying "sexual orientation doesnt matter" but does it actually matter to certain people?

Lesbians hate men and gay men act camp. That's why women don't mind being around gay men. Less of a "threat".

Marsh.

From my experience it is the personality that matters.

That includes being extremely camp. So, just because a bloke couldn't be friends with a really camp man doesn't mean he's homophobic.

I'm thinking like that really skinny guy who was on BOTS supporting Amy Childs, he was tooo camp.

I don't like those Lesbians that dress all butch and stuff, like Shirley of EastEnders - they just freak me out. I'm Sorry, but I like those lipstick lesbians
More and more lately though I've been running into girls who I try to flirt with, and they end up saying they have a girlfriend. :bored:

As for Gays, I don't really mind them tbh I find them hilarious and they're actually great banter.
It's just when they try to flirt with you and hit on you [which happens to me alot nowadays] and you're like 'Dude, I don't swing that way' and they don't take no for an answer, other than that - they are cool.

hello stereotypes

I'd say the majority of gay men do act camp. This whole "not all gay men are camp" argument pops up everytime. I get that some aren't, but a lot are.

Not really, the media just prefers camp men to regular gay men.

Why would you assume I'm going by the media?

It's where most people get the idea from, my dad is gay, quite a number of people I work with are, and several of my friends are, only one of all those people is what I would call "camp", on the flip side, I know straight people who act in a camp way.

The gay men I know aren't 'stereotypical' at all...not camp, and they hate 'girl talk'....I haven't had a decent 'outfit tip' out of them at all yet tbh...I don't find them any different to anyone else...male or female.

I really don't like stereotypical gay people. I think most of the time it's an act and the only reason they act that way is because they have no idea how to act like a 'calm' gay person. It's all over the media how they should act. It's for attention, it really annoys me.

Braden
19-02-2012, 01:43 PM
I think straight men and women are intimidated to be nice to gay people of the same sex because they don't want people to think they're more than just friends with that person. That's how I see it now, it may be different when I grow up but a lot of the straight people at my school are very aware of how people percieve them.

Used to live in an area where it was a melting pot of very interesting people in my 20s. As a hetero male I had several gay male friends and my roommate for a few years was a lesbian female. Never a dull moment. http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp32/sharkattack_torrential/laugh.gif

My best mate is a gay man, I'm friends with his partner too. I also have a friend in Galway, Ireland that I visit regularly who is a Lesbian. I don't think their sexual preference has ever been a factor in us being friends, I like them because they're interesting, talented, creative, fun, kind people.

I like people because I like the person, their personality, their good points, their bad points, their ability to interest me and my ability to have good interaction with them and vice versa.

I don't expect them to make a decision on me because of my sexual orientation - nor I them. To do so is bigotted, shallow and has no place in a civilised world.

im a straight female and ive had gay friends of both genders male and female it depends on personalities to me. when i was friends with them i worked with them we never stayed friends after we stopped working together but we were good friends @ the time. although i do facebook and text one gay male friend from time to time

One of my mates is gay, didn't know he was when I became friends with them although I guess that just shows that sexuality isn't that big of a factor unless it basically defines people, like making it a big part of their personality and being overly camp and stuff

Z
19-02-2012, 08:05 PM
Annoying people are annoying people, just this whole politically correct culture of ours means that people are wary to say they find some gay people annoying for fear of being dubbed a bigot. I find it annoying when people are loud and in your face, I find it annoying when people are overly religious and try to shove their beliefs down your throat, I find lots of things annoying. There are a lot of annoying gay people, but equally there are a lot of gay people who are not annoying, just like any other group of people in society, everyone's different. I guess that's all there is to say on the matter. You can't expect everyone to be friends with everyone, and a huge talking point for friends is sex and all things related to it. It's obviously going to be hard to relate to someone who isn't interested in the subject matter (e.g. talking about having sex with a woman to a gay man) so I think if the friendship group is heavily based around that, then you're less likely to find a gay person within that group. You know?

The question is though would it have been a factor if you had of known before the friendship was established? The stereotypical view is that men worry about being 'fancied' by gay men, or associated with them in case their own masculinity is called into question.

I am straight but have many friends who are gay and lesbian, I likely have many more I haven't a clue as to their sexual preference but then it's none of my business anyway.I have no problem at all with anyone as to their sexual preferences anyway though.

One thing I have noticed however,is that a lot of my friends who are female do develop really close and respectful relationships with gay guys. Preferring to confide in them rather than their general friends or family even.
