Say if you are in a restaurant and there is like a wildly fat person (not like just fat, but like a hippo with no signs of a chin/neck/jawline) sitting next to you, will it put you completely off your food and make you feel ill.

It does me :suspect:

not really, they just love their food, good on 'em

My brother used to work in a restaurant and they got told to be extra nice to fat people as they're more likely to buy more

I dont, but watched a prog this week where people had to be winched from buildings and were more of a splat than a person. Why would you do that to yourself? It is a mental health issue and more should be done to prevent them getting to that stage.

Nope, I don't like to judge.

I don't think I am judging that person, I do not feel they should change themselves or anything (probably glandular anyway). But I just involuntarily feel ill.

Well I guess it is actually subconscious judgement. But I can't help it.

If that person has an illness that makes it difficult for them to maintain a healthy weight and they see you looking disgusted/ill because of them they will feel really bad about themselves.

I don't like to think badly of people's appearance anyway because I don't know anything about them.

I do not make it obvious, that is mean and like bullying. It offends me that you would insinuate me doing that in a direct way, but I can't easily help the way I feel so...

But anyone who says they don't judge people on appearance is lying. It is a natural thing to do and we cannot prevent it. We were given eyes so we could judge things.

And it offends me that you just called me a liar, I know for a fact I don't judge people on appearance, just because you do doesnt mean everyone else does, maybe you will grow out of it who knows

Humans naturally form opinions based on the initial impression of someone, which is usually looks. I am not saying you let that impression over ride other positive features in a person. But is a natural response and no human can control it.

Oh and by the way Josy, for a moderator who warns me about baiting, you really do not set a good example.

Josy

I'm baiting because I have an opinion that differs from yours? why even bother making a thread like this if you get all defensive when someone disagrees with you?

I can control my judgement and I do not judge people by how they look, just because you judge people how they look, and probably had a look at wikipedia, it doesn't mean you can speak for other people.

Also, I think Josy has every right to question someone who calls her a liar.

To be fair it is natural to judge on appearance, everyone does it, it contributes to our first impression of a person.

No, everyone doesn't.

From a psycological perspective you do, its human nature.

I do not mind if someone has a different opinion on feeling ill. I did not make a thread about judging people on opinion. It is scientifically proven that humans automatically judge people on the first sense that is first affected from that new person. It is ingrained within us and if you are so confident that you can avoid that natural mental reflex then I suggest you go tell a scientist and make a **** load of money.

Also, if you are allowed to accuse me of baiting without even hearing me out, why am I not allowed to do the same when it is pretty obvious? I would like to hear a valid reason for that?

really I agree with kizzy, you can't deny that an initial reaction to someone is physical appearance (common sense really seeing you can't judge a personality on first sight)

When did I accuse you of baiting in this thread Charlie?

Also I know how I form an opinion on others and its based on their behaviour/attitude and not on appearance so don't call me a liar when you know nothing about me.

I disagree with this for example if I meet someone for the first time and they are really loud and in your face then I know that they are not really my kind of person, I couldnt care less how they look or dress etc.

Not in this thread, but I am saying in the past. If you can accuse me, why can I not you?

I know how to form opinions on people other than on looks thank you. It is just the natural human response to judge on looks initially. Also I did not call 'you' a liar. I called the collective that deny they psychologically respond to peoples appearance liars.

Yes I totally agree on that. However you will still have formed your initial opinion based on the first sense that sensed them, because it is natural. That opinion can be overwritten, I never denied that, but you still will have formed an opinion based on the first sense (usually this is sight).

you cant deny you have to look at them before you speak though, thats the point im making. And if you have been given a negative image of overweight people via the media or peer views it may contribute to your initial perception?

I feel sorry if it is hereditary or because they have a condition which means they can't maintain a healthy weight, but if it is by their own doing I find it hard to feel sorry for them. Especially when there are the children in Africa suffering from our overconsumption as it is.

I feel sorry for junkies too, and they do that to themselves. I just imagine their lives must be empty apart from their drugs. And that they seem to cause a lot of hurt to people who love them.

Anyway maybe some people are not as strong when it comes to ads about things like food. And it stops being something that is for nourishing you and becomes an addiction. I think morbidly obese people need help, and things like sugar companies should be made pay for it.

I agree, but if white carbohydrates were banned like I suggest the obesity rate and food addiction rate would fall tremendously. White processed carbs cause all the problems, I promise you.

I feel sorry for junkies that realise they have done wrong and trying to fix it and help themselves but are struggling. Same with obese people, if they make an effort to lose the weight and it is hard I feel sorry for them. If they take no action against it, I just can't.

I don't mind it.

I don't like watching people shove their food done in like five minutes though. Take a second to breathe and enjoy your food.

I have this fear of getting fat so when I see a fat person eating something I think I must not eat the food they are eating, even if its like a carrot I try not to Judge but I just do sometimes.
