How is that even possible? Surely you need to produce birth certificates for any children you claim for?

fake birth certs?
no, i dont think you need them, they try to make the system easier for people to use,but then it gets abused.

Oh really? That's stupid, you need them here. Infact for childrens allowance (which everyone is entitled to) they've even started sending out forms to all parents of kids receiving benefits asking them for the childs school and which class they're in to clamp down on people who don't even live in the country anymore but continue to claim.
Niamh told me she had 15 children :idc: from what I've seen she's only got 2

It just seems incredibly ridiculous that you wouldn't have to produce birth certs when applying though.

do they though? I know at least four mums who make a claim basing it on the fact that they have no partner yet the partner lives there and earns a wage. That way they don't have to declare his income.
Niamh.

Yeah but it just seems like a much more simple way to prevent it happening at all would be just produce the birth cert when applying

Well, that's a different scenario all together, harder to prove that then prove that 10 of your children don't exist

Surely the benefit system is partly to blame in this,it really needs a good shake up and get people in there who are interested in people and want to help them ,instead of signing anyone on that passes by,you cant really blame people if they can get away with such things, money for nothing seems to be the motto of the day, while we tax payers graft ,it's wrong,so glad she got found out .I hope these scroungers get sifted out the system quickly and the genuine people get the help they need.

If you are sure about that, you should report them. It's people like that who scrounge off society that prevent those who really need help from getting it. It seems having kids propels you to the top of any priority list for handouts, which is why so many people keep on having them when they can't afford to look after them without claiming benefits.

The more people scamming and claiming, the higher the average working persons taxes will go and the more we'll have to struggle. Same with those politicians claiming stupid expenses and using the tax payers money, I don't like either and don't excuse one because the other does it too.

All that means is that -as Niamh's pointed out - the decent, hardworking people end up paying more tax. Just because some rich people are twats (and not all of them are, they're employers and investors) doesn't mean you should admire someone for screwing the system that I am (and possibly you are) paying for through mythe tax system.

Well that's a bit jumbled but I'll work through it.
We have the government people voted for. If everyone who was eligible to vote actually did vote then the story might be different.
You probably don't know any MPs, what they do, how they work or how hard their staff work, not just in government but in their own constituencies. You remember one story about a moron with a duck house who tried to screw his expenses and you're going to cling on to that story for dear life and hold it up as an example for every other tory-hating leftie, conveniently forgetting all the MPs from all parties who didn't screw the system. Your hatred for the Right has made you lose sight of the fact that the left no longer really exists because it's full of champagne socialists richer than many Conservatives. You labour under the illusion that all Tories are rich, privately educated, trust-fund backed toffs, when this is just not the case. However, your hatred of the Right colours your judgement to such an extent that you end up sticking up for somoeone sucking money out of your own pocket by fiddling the benefits system you pay for.
The elephant is not ace, it's annoying and doesn't really do much to illustrate your point on a serious thread, to be frank.

Shall we fill the sun newspaper with EVERY MP that was found to have committed this FRAUD? Name and shame each one.
No one admires criminals, whatever social background they come from.
I'd imagine this was more just an anomaly than the norm, and not necessarily as a result of an inherent flaw in the benefit system, it seems they were aware she was overclaiming for years. I find stories like these are more often than not sensationalised by the likes of the Sun and the Mail, and if you ask me it is relevant to point out that millions, even billions, of pounds are lost by hugely wealthy firms and people who manage to avoid paying taxes and find loopholes, and yet are not vilified in the same way that benefit cheats are

What muddled thinking! To paraphrase a famous quotation "all it takes for fraud to flourish is for people to turn a blind eye". It's precisely because of scroungers defrauding the system that scarce resources are misdirected and those who truly need help can't get it. I would report a scrounging scumbag in a heartbeat, and not go around polishing my halo for not "grassing up" said scumbag, or pontificating about notional scams which might or might not be perpetrated by "rich" people, when you have actual scamming going on under your very nose of which you are fully aware.
Fraud is fraud whoever is committing it. Being poor doesn't give you licence to go around thieving and defrauding the system. From the sound of it the women you are talking about are NOT poor, they have working partners, and are just greedy, con artists.

Yes, fiddling your expenses IS fraud, you're quite right. However, the MPs that did commit the fraud have already been named and shamed in a whole host of newspapers, I don't see how anyone could have missed it. I can assure you that all expense claims have been tightened up to a ridiculous degree in Parliament, ensuring those MPs (and their staff) who wouldn't ever have dreamed of fiddling their expenses find it almost impossible to claim for even ligitimate stuff these days, the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority sees to that. So I have reason to detest the MPs who fiddled, and I do detest them. But MPs expenses have been done to death, and yet every time some feckless member of the unter-class gets caught fiddling a benefits system that's meant to be there to help the most needy, a whole host of people whip out the old tar brush and give everyone in parliament a dab with it.
As you mention that MPs are paid "a fitting wage", I have to disagree there also. They're paid around £60,000pa. That's not even a middle management salary in the private sector, and for the responsibility they take it just ensures that only people of private means can afford to be MPs. People from less well-off backgrounds take their skills and find better paid employment elsewhere.

It obviously doesn't take a genius to defraud a DWP that's been haemorraging cash for the whole of Labour's term. They didn't spot it for eight years... but of course, the Tories will be responsible for the whole ten years I'm guessing.

Thanks. Definitely infuriates me, it's the unbelievable selfishness that gets me the most. How they think it's perfectly fine to take what they want as they please without contributing anything to the community.
Especially in the current climate when people are losing their jobs and homes that they worked so hard for in their lives.
Yeah, I completely agree with that.

What kind of house was she in? Did no one find it odd that this woman with 10 kids was living in a 2 up 2 down backstreet of Manchester? Ridiculous. My younger brother has cerebral palsy and has struggled for funding on all sorts of equipment, been on endless waiting lists to join groups and care centres and women like this just make it harder for everyone. Scum, she should be hung.
I can imagine this sort of story must absolutely infuriate you - it certainly does me. Your brother, through no fault of his own suffers from a disability for which he requires essential equipment, yet the funding is erratic if not non-existent. However, parasites like this scumbag defraud the system of money they invariably don't actually need, but to which they feel some sort of entitlement. Absolutely disgraceful. The punishments for these sorts of crime need to always be custodial, otherwise where is the deterrent?

Couldn't agree more. Just that picture of the woman walking free from court astounds me. She should be ashamed of herself but most likely isn't.

People will always try to con the system, and regardless of whether the government is Tory or Labour.
Whilst everyone is trying to stop the steam coming out of their ears on this, how about if you were told that the economy loses far more from rich people dodging personal and business taxes?
Because that's what currently happens.
This woman is in the wrong to do this, no doubt about it, but this is the typical ploy of rags like "The S*n." Demonising the poor is their standard fare. This woman will be prosecuted, but where are the investigations into the rich tax dodgers, funneling their millions to "tax-friendly" places?

Stop misquoting me livia, respond to what i say and not what you want to think i said...I am not a socialist either, please dont label me.
Im in favour of welfare reforms, they are not the issue in discussion though are they? Its the way the red tops demonise certain groups in an attempt to whip the public into a feeding frenzy of hatred over said group. Its working perfectly.
Once again i DO NOT condone her actions, as your 'LOL ...Okay' suggests you dont believe me .

I spend a fair bit of time in parliament, yes, as well as in the constituency. I wasn't evading your point; you don't seem to have a point, or it's fairly well hidden in amongst the usual anti-tory, duck-house-referenced flaming. It's fair to say that I don't usually agree with JHC's political opinions but he does tend to have a clear point that he sticks to that isn't just "I hate the tories". I know rich people play the system, but that doesn't make it right for people on benefits to cheat the system also. It means they're both wrong.

I do have a point, read back through my posts ignore the parts that you feel incensed by and hey presto there it is..
I could say the same of your opinion regarding the underclass...but lets not start tit for tatting.... All those in favour say 'Aye'

Exactly, I can't see why that is even being mentioned here tbh, if people don't agree that it's alright for her to do it because some rich people do, why even bring it into the discussion?

It's not so much that one excuses the other, it's just that the issue with the rich costs the country/government far more money than benefit cheats, but there are no national campaigns demonising the rich.
People are generally unaware of the problem that rich people avoiding tax/employing loopholes causes, but ask anyone about benefit cheats, and people lose their ****. Poor people inform on their neighbours, and hot lines are set up to encourage this practice.
I think this woman has acted appallingly, and she will be prosecuted. The poor are having the very things they rely on taken away from them to pay for a rich mans caused recession, and politicians are talking about shared sacrifice.
Highlighting the lack of justice, does not absolve a this woman of a theft of government funds, but everyone in the country is against this woman, whilst very few of us are even aware that there is another side to this.

Well, I can't comment on how much it's discussed over there, but here people are far more outraged and angry at our government and their expenses and our bankers and us having to be bailed out because of them, then benefit cheats.

We have good ol' Rupert Murdochs press over here, constantly forcing "dole scroungers/benefit cheats/single mums/muslims" down our throats.
The bailouts were completely necessary at the time that they happened, but I bet you've never seen one item on the news/in a newspaper about the money that rich people cost, by avoiding paying what they are legally obliged to pay.
