The iPad 3 is rumored to be including Senseg's haptic display technology, according to tech site Pocket-lint.

This new technology would give the tablet a new advanced tactile feedback system that could add a completely new sensory input to the device.

The different between this new technology and traditional haptic is that on the new one puts an electrical pulse behind every pixel where older versions create the sensation of physical touch with a small electrical stimulus.

"In theory, this would effectively create a 2048 x 1538 Retina display with so-called "textured feedback," wrote 9to5Mac. "That is, it would add 'texture' to objects on the screen when touched."

Applications of this technology could be numerous and especially handy for both seeing and hearing issues, according to the site.

Games would also gain a whole new dimension if programmers were able to control screen pulses with a pixel-level accuracy along with providing sensory perception of textures by varying friction between the screen and the finger of the user.

The article where this information derived from stated that Apple has been in talks with a company known as Senseg who created an advanced haptic display technology called E-Sense. The relationship between the two cannot be confirmed until the iPad 3 is officially announced later on today.

"We won't be making any statements until after Apple's announcement," said a spokesman for Senseg.

Its senior vice president Ville Makinen recently provided Trusted Reviews with a major hint towards their collaboration.

He told the publication that Senseg is "currently working with a certain tablet maker based in Cupertino."

According to Makinen, the company hopes to "make a corrugated surface feel corrugated, a rough surface rough and a soft surface soft."

The iPad 3 will be unveiled by Apple at 10 a.m. PT at a media event hosted by the company. It should be for sale by next week.

I know there are a lot of people who call Apple products over-hyped and over-priced, however if this rumour turns out to be true it will revolutionise the touch screen industry. To be able to create artificial textures :o

P.S. This rumour only surfaced today and in the past majority the rumours that have been publicised within the 24 hours prior to announcement have turned out to be true. This could well be likely :amazed:

All we can expect from today is four things:
-An iPad with retina display
-An iPad with Siri
-An iPad with the Apple A6 quad core processor
-And possibly a 7 inch iPad

I seriously doubt Apple have invested in such a crazy screen technology.

If anyone wants a liveblog of the event, Engadget has one running here (http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/07/apple-ipad-3-liveblog/). Its starting now.

4G radios are gonna be within the models that take sim cards. Completely useless here of course, because theres no 4G infrastructure. .__.

What dya mean Niall by 'no 4g infostructure?'

I mean that in the UK (and the majority of the world if iirc) have nearly no mobile phone towers that currently support the next generation of mobile phone signals. 4G is the successor to 3G and its a lot faster with internet speeds etc. All of the major American phone networks have some sort of 4G capability, but here, theres only a trial in some city down south. :bored:

I think the phone networks here are starting to install 4G technology around the nation, but they're so slow so I wouldn't expect it to be up and running before next year at least.

It means that the display has so many pixels crammed into it that to the human eye, it looks like a printed page.

I don't even understand how artificial textures would even be possible.
