I guess this is what war has the potential to do to people. He had just had a nervous breakdown apparently, I'm not surprised

this type of thing have happened many times in past wars. A combination of a bunch of terrible stuff and a person snaps and has a nervous breakdown. Him being drunk definitely didn't help. very sad

Sounds like it was just a guy that snapped. Could happen in any profession, post office, accountant, dude just went postal i guess.

Will be interesting to hear the full story.

Remember the Afghans killed 6 US soldiers in the last few weeks over that whole Koran burning thing, so it's not like the Afghans arn't murderous freaks too. Who knows if that or anything else that's happened had a factor in this.

Bring them all home NOW, that's all i care about.

Yes all those horrible American troops building hospitals and roads and schools,. disgusting people those American troops.

How dare they try to help rebuild a country after war, just like they did after ww2 for the UK and Germany, and Japan, and France.

he was off duty at the time is my understanding, therefore he was not acting as a "US troop". We don't know al the details right now, but that is my understanding. So i don't think this is a story about US troops, this is a story about a sicko murderer.

We don't say all teachers are pedophile's just because some are, do we? the VAST majority of teachers do amazing work.

Let me just a few things out, he was in a combat zone, therefore there isnt really an "Off Duty". He will have received the in theatre arrivals brief where its pointed out that his actions either off duty or on will be seen to be representative of the US abroad.

The fact is he a US serviceman allowed him to obtain access to weapons and ammunition.

The fact that he had some form of breakdown, or that he shouldnt have been deployed in an active duty zone wont be really taken into consideration by the Afghani people, merely the fact that he was a US serviceman.

Well the Afghani "people" are uneducated, illiterate, animals. They think throwing a book in the trash is reason to kill people, so i don't think anyone expects the Afghani "people" to respond in any kind of civilized way.

Added to the accidental burning of the religious books too it would appear the USA is doing more harm being there.
What a crazy event and it will hardly do the USA's image any good at all. What is wrong with a minority of American forces staff, they seem to have got into all sorts of incidents like this quite a few times.

Having said that though, it must be a really crazy and intense place to be, very oppressive. Clearly the soldier snapped and hopefully lessons will be learned and soldiers checked more to make sure they can take the strains of being in such places.

I was reading today that the suicide rate among American soldiers has risen by 80% over the last few years and that 100,000 troops seek councelling every month, mental health problems in the army don't seem to be getting given enough attention and help and this is the result I guess. Not that this is unusual in war if you look at Haditha in Iraq, My Lai in Vietnam etc.

What I would say though is that the same amount of understanding should be shown to a Muslim or an Afghan who carries out a similar act, when that happens all people talk about is Islamic terrorism, instead of actually asking questions about why they resort to such measures and their own mental state, which must also be pretty bad considering the condition the country is in

The whole war is a mess, Afghans are basically being asked to choose between the Taleban or the completely corrupt Karzai regime, which is also a centralised government the likes of which they're not familiar with. Can clearly see lostalex's racism shining through in this topic though, damn Afghan animals having the audacity to moan about innocent children getting shot
